A single, perfect gem shines from the dust Refracting the joyful morning sunbeams Bending the light to perfect its beauty. I wish nothing more then to pick it up, hold it to my heart, yet I let it lie undisturbed, lest I change the way it shines.
Wow, day 10 already? Today's poem's more blank verse, hope you guys like it!
Desert Winds
Stinging sand whips across my face like flame Blown against me by winds of aeons' pain. If I go much further, I'll surely fall, Beaten and broken by the weight of time. Shall I press onward, knowing I must die? Or let the wind carry me where it may?
I've really enjoyed reading through these poems Ethan! You definitely have a style of primarily blank-verse poetry with themes like heaven, stars, and angels that's different than all the other NaPo threads. My favorite poem was "Beautiful Glowing Minds" because of the strong imagery and deep themes of wandering. You've also done a great job of consistently updating daily and staying on track. Keep up the great work!

Today's NaPo is a very short blank-verse poem. Also, congrats to the winners of April Madness round one!
Absence
It's funny how you could have lived your life Never even knowing someone exists But once you do, just one day without them Bleeds and burns, a tear in your soul
Wow, sonnets are hard! This one is rather clunky, but hey, at least I did it!
Reflections
Shattered mirrors cover the burning ground In a quicksilver sheen, like ancient ice Sharded reflections of my voice resound Echoing, distorted, to paradise
Refracted sunsets taste like blood in here This flaming cavern filled with breaking souls What is the color of mirror-spun fear? It's somewhere between tears and marigolds.
It's amusing that hell's made of mirrors Reflections my torment 'til some new dawn And yet tomorrow never draws nearer, Not until these sanguine fragments are gone
I could be free if I'd courage to try To look my own reflection in the eye
More short blank verse, who would have guessed? Also, halfway through NaPo, so a clap on the back for everyone else who's made it this far!
Gleaming Feathers
Gleaming feathers drift down like sunken ships Upon the shining landscape, silken rain The golden bird soars high above my head Its burnished plumage shining like the sun Or perhaps it is the sun, this eagle Soaring above the clouds like Apollo A god of the sky for aeons unknown
Todays poem is about how easy it is to be distracted by new creative projects, something I think a lot of us can relate to. I decided to give in this time, because as long as I'm writing, who cares what I write?
Shiny
A gleaming something shimmers at the edge Of my vision, be it a golden coin Or a cold steel dagger aimed at my heart Whatever it is, I rush to see it Dropping what treasure I held to find out
For April 17th, I'm going back to free verse. Still short, because that's all it seems I can do, but it is what it is.
Insomniac Dreamers
How can you stay asleep in your cold steel bed When the night air breathes such beautiful music? This symphony of stars composed For insomniac dreamers, Apollo's children, To dance by in the sacred moonlight. While scientific fools slumber at night, We drink poetry with the satyrs Like the beautiful madmen we are.
Well, this is not the poem I set out to write when I started it, but it's the poem I ended up with!
The Blood of Trees
My hands are spattered With the blood of innocent trees A grove of budding saplings Murdered for you.
You once told me of the souls they bore You spoke with vehemence Of smokestacks and gears Of steel blades and iron bars And I drank your lies like a fool.
Did you ever believe your words Of miracles and God? Have you forgotten what you love? Or was it always a lie Crafted to make me love you?
What hurts me most Is the passion you spoke with. The same way you talk Of your love for me. So forgive me if I ask you now Was that a lie, too?
I'm liking some of these shorter ones you're doing a lot actually! The poem from April 15 had great sound, and the concept for the April 17 one of 'insomniac dreamers' was such a neat idea to explore poetically - both poems left me wanting to read more!
(Also I am in complete agreement over sonnets being really hard! I managed to write 2/3rds of one a couple days ago, but haven't wanted to finish it XD I really like this line in your sonnet by the way, "Refracted sunsets taste like blood in here")
you should know i am a time traveler & there is no season as achingly temporary as now
OMG! All your poems are wonderful. I love your choice of words. They make the poems so beautiful. I especially loved Broken Lines, Silver Dreams, Reflections and oh god Insomniac Dreamers
Even After All this time The Sun never says To the Earth "You owe me" Look What happens With a Love like that It lights the Whole Sky
