with compassion

action put to feeling
power paired with hands
eager to give healing

when you are moved
and your heart aches
you reach in
to help

your head is like the finest gold
crowned with wisdom, knowledge old
free from earthly filthy grime
rooted in eternal time

who can know what day what comes
take breaths of air to fill their lungs
in case the circumstances make
their backs and breaths and inhales break

behold the wisest one of all
when leading there is no shortfall
you know what day what's coming next
and know how to direct our steps

and in it all you stay the same
for you our maker know our frame
if ever we're misunderstood
our comfort is that you are good

i do not always understand
the lessons and the paths you've planned
for yourself
and for me

i want to understand your ways
to feel the beat your rhythm plays
and synchronize
my feet

i love how your compassion
is paired with healing action

I don't know many people
who stick something through to the end
when it takes some time (and I mean some time)
for our broken relations to mend

for most of us our hope is feeble
when years upon years pass by
for someone to change (and I mean really change)
when obligations don't apply

I'm guessing that's what amazes me
when i look at the way that you wait
consistent, persistent, and patient, sincere
you're not spiteful as you illustrate

a faithfulness and a long-suffering
forbearance and such great restraint
i love that you're patient (oh so very patient)
and kind to me without constraint

i don't know many people
who stick something through to the end
when ages pass by (generations pass by)
and still have more grace to extend

I love the way you prayed
the way you stayed
a human for us
showed us how to speak
though we are weak
and went before us

asking of your father
so that we'd know how to ask
and know it's not a bother
to come without a mask

you were there when the heavens were made
drawn out like a curtain // in emptiness laid
creating and making and speaking your will
made something from nothing with infinite skill
i know it was you alone, thought of the clouds
inventing what exists and what is allowed
your father was watching and with you up there
together, you making, with love that you share
setting the boundaries of the waters, deep
then carving the valleys and the mountains, steep
you're the master craftsman // the father's delight
day after day your face shining so bright
oh how he took pleasure when things came to be
you making mand and earth with him, the three
he loves you, adores you, rejoices in song
always in your presence and all the day long

unashamed to call us brothers
to welcome in fathers and sisters and mothers
we didn't do anything that was desirable
our morals fell shamefully short of admirable
but you became like us
with us
for us
chose us by your own design
so we cannot say that we did something
had something
it was just you saying:
you are mine

from the beginning
you were the word
before there was sinning
and humans had heard
in that deep fellowship
the three together
the spirit, the son
and the father forever
the light of all mankind
the one who made all things
in the darkness he would shine
as the king of all kings
but who would believe him
and who would understand
humanity was dim
their heads buried in sand
but his light would shine through
and pierce the dark curtain
your light comes to pursue
that is for certain

I haven't met someone else like you
who's so genuine and kind
with no hint of deceit
or guile
wholly, wholly
trustworthy in all of your ways
and all that you say
can be counted on
counted on
as the days roll along
you stay the same
you mean what you say
and you meant to do
it's follow through

i am overjoyed to know you
if only just a glimpse for now
but i see more
and more
and more

this is the pleasure i have
for eternity
being your friend
and knowing you entirely
