today i invented the sun dial

every time the sun comes up
i feel achy and fumble
around my room, into the backyard
and feel out the sunlight.
i feel just to know
that it can only get better
from here. it takes time, but time
is a man-made illusion
so maybe what i’m really wasting
is my energy. energy of thought
and of sitting here waiting
for the sun to go back down.

health

God, the way he moved his fingers
Down my back and down under
By the tree after midnight.
In the grass where it was all dewey
And scratchy, and all over
I was looking around
For something to lay my eyes on
And distract myself
While he did his thing.
Over and over again, heavy
And slow
Cold and curling my back
Towards his arms.
“Let’s try this all again,” he said
“I wanna love harder this time.”

Last time, he was all over me
And I was all over the world.

High school doesn’t mean
That we have to stick together
The whole time.
Ohio doesn’t mean
That there’s nowhere go to
From here.

God, the way he talked like chocolate
And tasted like dirty bath water
Covered in eyes
That were looking at me all over
While I looked over his shoulder
And ate away at the up and down
Passing time.

refuse to struggle, succeed to stand

Ben Howard plays on the stereo
I’m engulfed by the phosphorescent glow
Emitted by simply the color
Of your near-gray eyes.

Cherry Coke

Cherry coke in your left hand
when you knelt over
to collect your change
from the vending machine.
i took a sip. Bubbly and sweet,
fuckery of the senses
fucked me senseless.
“Read it and weep,” you pointed
to the nutritional facts
on the side of the bottle.
just you and me
and a bottle of sugary black
us vs. whatever else is out there.

Explosions in the sky

I put down the bell curve
And walked to the store
On a Wednesday.
The air was sweet in the trees
And alive in my lungs.
I walk alone, I walk alone
I walk alone when I wanna.

Almost there, and I stopped
And started to float
Up in flames, an explosion
In the sky
A creature of habit
And of reincarnation
I scatter and explode
Just to be alive again.

mountains, rivers, fields, harvest

We went camping in the summer
Running rampid in the sand
Wreaking havoc in the streets
Of the camp site
For shits and giggles.
Threw you into the pond
And you pulled me right down under.
It was warm and wet.
My hair dried curly,
And we brushed it straight.
That was the last time
I saw a tree frog
And the first time I saw
You naked.
R.E.M played from the college kids’
Tent plot.
“Happy anniversary,” and your aunt’s
Water broke.
The complicated mess of whatever
Was going on
And the cautious chaos of
The crickets and frogs;
Lord knows
What he knows.

future together

looking for my mind
around the room
alongside the streets
where we walk together.
looking for the answer
is it right for me?
what's this all going to look like
however many years in the future

you with your job
and me with my classes
growing up too fast
busting our asses

feeding the jaws
of an unforgiving landlord
looking for our money
chewing on apple cores.

religion

revival came
when the crowd roared louder
and followed the leader
to the cross.

evacuation of disease and weakness
darwinism and its counterparts
eating up the orange peels
and coloring their faces
black.

exposure therapy

when i was eight, my dad
threw me into the water
and i thought i would die
right then. sinking to the bottom,
i thought of little
other than my red headed friend
from the valley
and her emerald green eyes,
the way they glowed with urgency
that i had never known
nor would i ever see again.

colorless

I can only love him at night
When the lens creates
Colorless distortions
Over his face, and his heart
Asks for me first, to find
A deeper meaning within
And a fiercer passion without.

He shakes me in the morning
Hands me my shoes, and sends me
Away with his coat
Out the window
And into the street lights, walking off
That energy. That fight. That beautiful sound
That his voice makes when he’s close.

I can only love him at night
Because the day brings out the worst in us
And I’m tired and fighting
For my life. When the day is done
The cards stacked down to one
I can see him simply, blurred vision
Of the reality of things
Peeking over his naked shoulder.

curses!

The moment I reach my freezing point
You reach your boiling point.
And with your fists in the air,
You’re punching at nothing;
Throwing fists at a phantom feeling
Of hatred and nothingness.

scraping pennies

We’re scraping pennies
And kissing their asses.
Our compliance
And the universe spinning
‘Round and ‘round
Laughing at us
Smiles bright green
And gritty.

60s disco party

Shall I compare thee to a broken record
Thou art endlessly breaking and skipping over
The most important parts. The parts
That hurt the worst and sound the best.

Shadowboxing you in the dark,
It's a lonely life you lead
Sigh, rinse, repeat.

expanding universe

Orion in the sky, I point
And laugh. You look to me and say
You wanna die with me. Next to me.
For me. I say,
“What’s the hurry?”
And you look again to the stars
The universe staring back at us
And reach out to touch
My voice
As I hold your hand
To keep from falling.

29.

dictionary for dickheads

the nicest man you'll ever meet
drives a big black car
and whispers indistinctly
into a tiny microphone
in front of his face.

if he had a daughter,
she'd be a total hardass
with a beer bottle opener
always at the ready.

the nicest man you'll ever meet
eats at taco bell
and never orders the same thing twice.
his lips are like leather,
his bones are like butter.

if he grew a brain,
he'd probably take over the world
and keep his cell phone
in his back pocket.

the nicest man you'll ever meet
is sleeping out an overlay
at the airport
flushing a bucket full of smiles
down the toilet
and writing urban dictionary definitions
in his mama's vacuumed basement.
