1. Lessons in Crochet

Bury your expectations, try
to weave from them a tapestry
where the grass is no greener on the other side
and the cuckoo bird lives but never sings, only sighs,
casting about with wary an eye.

Tell yourself the low cliffs are too terribly high
or others will for you until you can't deny
the din of the truth as it brings in the tide
and the hopes that you held and their undoing collide.

Live a chameleon life, always dreading, always hide
until the

slippery, fantasy, lives

Okay so this is unfinished but I'm pretty sleepy and I'm not sure where it's going except the prompt I'm following requires me to use three more words that totally don't fit in anywhere...

Still trying to get back into the swing of this! I'm not sure I want to use either of these for April Madness...

Diminishing verse:

2. Disappear

I'd like to pass beyond your notice, to disappear
like a reverse magician whose trick is appear,
amaze, astound but I slip, sunder, sap pear-
like - the only fruit to appear
bottom heavy, sunk, a harelip pear
shipwrecked with perfect fruit. A pear
unappealing in design, unaccustomed to balancing, the ear
lost in a sea of corn, uniform only from afar
but unafraid and un-tethered; a unicorn star.

Cascade Poem:

3. Shadow-Play

I was awake so late, my shadow stirred
and sat in office in my favourite chair;
he went unnoticed or perhaps preferred.

The blinking box demanded my password
and stumbling over keys I reaffirmed
I was awake so late, my shadow stirred.

I sat in silence, spooled, my mind elsewhere
and answered every call, each quest confirmed
and sat in office in my favourite chair;

the goblins danced over work incurred
the night my shadow overtook my lair.
He went unnoticed or perhaps preferred.

(I think this one needs to be extended to the four line format as there's too much being left unsaid!)

Extended edition:

3. Shadow-Play

I was awake so late, my shadow stirred
and sat in office in my graveyard chair;
he went unnoticed or perhaps preferred
while I drifted in the depths of nether-where.

I was a soul in need of much repair
and stumbling over keys I reaffirmed
there was more work than I could ever bare;
I was awake so late, my shadow stirred.

He took my eyes in his, our roles transferred,
I saw and heard the day through filtered air.
He drank plant water, ate the day's crossword
and sat in office in my graveyard chair.

I sat in silence, spooled, my mind elsewhere -
was he here to help, this crocodile bird?
To pluck the parasites from my hardware?
He went unnoticed or perhaps preferred.

He answered every call, each quest confirmed,
the night my shadow overtook my lair,
and goblins danced over work incurred
while I drifted in the depths of nether-where.

Removed lines:
The blinking box demanded my password

[b]4.

Compound interest is an interesting thing,
it seems the more you have, the more you get
so I've borrowed fifty-kay from the, bank,
to put me ahead of the curve.
In this world, we have to help ourselves
or the help will end up on the streets
but I'll give you a tip down low
where the richiest rich can't reach it:

(Another work in progress. I kind of want to make it into one of those read me down then read me up types but that feels like a lot of hard work...)

5.

An hour should be long enough
for me to write a poem
but some days I don't know
where to start
or where to

(Shhhhh, it totally counts!)

6. Trains stopped the day you were born -
that's why I was late seeing you,
but when I did,
your blue eyes, twin diamonds flashing
like the crossing signals
were telling me to stay.

On your first birthday lightning struck
so I was towing the tree to the tip
instead of teaching you
how to share your cake.

(I have no idea where I'm going with this and at some point I'm going to need to actually finish these ones I keep starting.)

I sure hope poems about writing poems count, otherwise half of my last year's NaPo is null and void :P

I like all of these, unfinished as they may be. I like seeing all the different forms you try out - it encourages me to challenge myself to something more structured than free verse.

#6 looks like the start of something great, incidentally - one of those poems that paints a picture of a loved one in beautiful concrete details.

7. How to Protect Your Disk

The endless running of our time
has left black scratches on her skin;
repeat, remix but no rewind
and yet she holds her youth within.

Has left black scratches on her skin,
this urge we have to change design
and yet she hold her youth within,
the wealth of heart and strength of mind.

This urge we have to change design
take action now against oblivion -
the wealth of heart and strength of mind
will fortify our new position!

Take action now against oblivion -
repeat, remix but no rewind
will fortify our new position:
the endless running of our time.

I'm far too tired to poet.

They asked me to erase your name
from every system, all the sacred sarcophagi
where you still existed.
Like it was nothing,
just another day at the office
when you were gone.

I remember Halloween, the skeleton
I sat at your desk,
another soldier in our age-old conflict,
and you laughed
but the world has
a bad sense of humour.

Our Christmas truce lingered,
was shattered when extenuating circumstances
took you out of the game.
And there, a Christmas card from me to you;
our final interaction.
You said it was very British of me

I shouldn't be trying this.Or maybe I should. I don't know. I guess I'm going to keep trying to write this today but I'm not sure that I'm ready yet.

No, I want to try again already. This is the problem of working from home - too many ways for your brain to get distracted.

You said it was very British of me,
you meant it as a compliment
but it was also a very British headline:
...man stabbed to death in west London;
no mention of your culture,
or the wife who walked with you,
the daughter waiting at home for her daddy
on December 22, 2017.

A daughter who loves Paw Patrol,
even though the girl dog is hardly ever featured
and this is her very British Christmas

No, I don't think that's the way I want to go with this.

This looks like it's a tough one to write. The first stanza is very powerful, even if you're not ready to finish the whole thing yet.

I remember Halloween,
when I laid the skeleton across your desk,
another toy soldier in our age-old conflict.
That time you returned
and your retaliation was laughter
but the world
has a bad sense of humour.

We made a truce before Christmas,
it lingered, was extended;
immortalised when extenuating circumstances
took you out of the game.
The battlefield was empty
but for a card
from me to you.

You said it was very British of me,

At the end, they played your music
and your daughter skipped to the church,
a comet etching through
a darkening universe.
Your wife says we should smile the smiles
you dropped like feathers from your wings.
Maybe when I've stopped being angry,
I will.

Warning: This one turned a little darker than I intended. I'm not sure what way I'd take it if I ever get around to doing a final draft of these. It also has some sexual references so skip this one if you're not comfortable with that.

9. Womens Weekly

Monday girls are born beautiful,
dancing like the corn in the wind,
hair like rivulets of sunshine
in an otherwise boring week.

Tuesday girls are born with a brush in hand,
less natural but still striking
with their panda eyes and painted lips
like China dolls.

Wednesday girls try and they almost get it right
but you can tell that they've missed
and poked their eye one too many times.
Cry babies.

Thursday girls won't get far in this world;
too short, too wide, too light, too dark
and a long, long way from Monday.

Friday girls are fun to take for a spin
but you always feel like you can do better
and sooner or later, you have to let
them go again.

Saturday girls charge more than they're worth
but at least you're guaranteed
a return for your money
at an efficient exchange.

Sunday girls, they're something else,
they have a sort of feel good charm
that makes even the oldest sinner
look twice.

10.Missing Rainbow: Please Return to Sender

Mother once told me
there's a silver lining in every cloud
and you can't see a rainbow
if there isn't any rain.

Today the path is dark with it,
the grass is so drunk
it teeter totters in the wind.

I tried to look for the rainbow,
but I think it drowned,
like the lost city of Atlantis -
too full of gold
to float above the waves.

Yes, that's what you get today. It was that or dungeons of dragons nonsense so be grateful...

Okay, I have only apologies for this one but I was tired so...

11. The Behemoth

Infinite times I have bet my life
on the roll of the dice,
and I didn't think twice
before I rolled.
But this isn't your average troll,
so easy to steamroll,
like going for a stroll
in a level one dungeon.
This is more than a munchkin
needing to be saved from being luncheon,
it's about being cool.
That's the number one rule
and if I roll a twenty my mum says
I can stay home from school.
