scene.1/ACT.2:
celia holds a beating heart
near her
trying to teach hers
the rhythm
and she wonders why it bleeds.

scene.2/ACT.3:
the burden of love falls heavily on
the wings
of an unwilling spirit
it's eyes are glum with
self-dread.

scene.3/ACT.4:
celia pushes the knife
deeper into her chest
promising herself that-
if she makes the hole big enough
a new heart will fit.

scene.4/ACT.5:
the spirit resigns to love-
if only to eradicate bloodshed.

scene.5/ACT.6:
celia's heart falls.
I hope it's a good joke because otherwise I'll have got it for nothing...

foreign policies fill my stomach
with an overwheming sensation
of loneliness.
it's like an alarm went off
and now I'm aware of my own awareness
floating on a donut
trying not to touch the water that's
over-clorinated.
but it's okay because
as long as I stay hydrated
there's a chance
my stomach troubles
will stay in the pool.
I hope it's a good joke because otherwise I'll have got it for nothing...

with the rising temperature
I realize I forgot how lovely
summer looks on you.
and I wonder what a tan looks like
in another language
where there's more loops
and swirls
where they dop their I's
with an ink so rich
you could mistake it for chocolate
smooth and unforgettable.
but it melts. and melts. and melts...
and soon there's blotches all over the page
so they turn it into a scratch-and-win
for taste-testers.
as if gambling your life away to chocolate
is an occupation.
I hope it's a good joke because otherwise I'll have got it for nothing...

lightbulbs. did anyone every tell you about lightbulds?
how, you think they're just for light -
but no, ohhh, no -
they pretend to be the sun
and bugs - innocent little bugs, gulliable dare I say -
fly into them
hoping to start a new life
a life of warmth
free to live in harmony with the lightswitch
(though they don't know what a lightswitch is)
it's like they forgot to put on their electric-shock-prevention
jackets though. or their safety goggles. or their fire-resistent-blankets
and then they just end uo on the ledge of the lamp.
fried- for lack of a more ellequent word.
I hope it's a good joke because otherwise I'll have got it for nothing...

the moon has not visited in ages
so I was startled to see him last night
waiting for me to have insomnia
and say hello

but he's changed, and so have I
the sun has gotten between us
and now I sleep at night
like all the normal people

call me at midnight
and you better be prepared
for the moon to answer in my place
he's on graveyard shift

and it's okay because
he watches the time tick along
and gives the sun a playful nudge
when it's time to wake up
I hope it's a good joke because otherwise I'll have got it for nothing...

as we draw to a close
let me remind you that
fallen angels weep
because all the pain in the world
crashes around them
everything you feel
they feel
and they feel your sister's pain too
so they cry
and they sob
and they wish with all their might
to be free again
suspended above us all
shielded from our sorrows
because if they feel too much
if their empathy cracks
then they'll turn on us
and instead of looking out for us
they'll ruin all of us
and that my friend
would not be a very happy ending
I hope it's a good joke because otherwise I'll have got it for nothing...

she sounded of fast-moving water
and smelled of freshly baked bread
she followed me only because
I knew where freedom was
and offered to bring her there
but it was not meant to be

when automn came to a close
she avoided my gaze, and-
told her friends she didn't know me
but the marks of freedom
were still on her arms

she still smells of freshly baked bread
but the sound of fast-moving water has faded
giving way to a hum of vehicles
and city workers.
she hasn't called in years
I hope it's a good joke because otherwise I'll have got it for nothing...

a picnic in the rain
such a wonderful thought
we picked a day- a gloom compared
to the ones around it
and we shivered while we ate
but we loved it because
I could feel that you loved me
even though it was a damp and
freezing, you were there and
that's the thing about picnics;
it's easy to get people out on a sunny day
but the ones who really care about you
are the ones who'll have the picnic anyday

and I couldn't help wonder
if this was the beginning of a
long list of spring picnics
rain or shine; we'll be there
laughing, joking, and adopting
your family as mine.
I hope it's a good joke because otherwise I'll have got it for nothing...

they told me a farewell was in order
especially since, all those days, we spent side-by-side
counting lily-pads on the pond that obscured our driveway
suspended in a pink canoe.
I wondered how long we'd have to swim home
because you leaned too far over to get a better look at the carp
or to kiss me.
those days it took so long to get home because we'd rather float
above what we used to call our foundation
and we'd think to ourselves that we had so much in common with clouds
which is why I'm hesitant to say goodbye
because I know time never goes back to the way things were-
no matter how many times you get promised.
so sing to remember the way
listen for the familiar echo on the hills
because we will see eachother again
if only to float in the pond one last time.
I hope it's a good joke because otherwise I'll have got it for nothing...
