dandruff cereal

the curtain drops with a
wave of her hands,
graced very little by sunlight

her blinds flutter with her breath,
a quickened pace, rhythm building
and escaping her mouth

she has an insatiable itch
at the mountain’s crown
the precipice calling
out for attention

she digs in, releasing
white specks that flutter
onto her clothes, a nearly
polka-dot pattern, new
every time it’s created,
produced, mimicked

soon, there will be enough
faux snowflakes for a
bowl of cereal, the milk
produced by a
steady stream of salty
water matting the curtain

she’ll have to let it air
out to dry now

love cracking

there’s something enchanting
of a floor that won’t stop breaking
even worse than a still beating heart
going through loves as the minutes tick by

they quarrel like thunder sounds and
lightning strikes. it's hard to keep the storm
from sparking a fire deep inside,
something brewing hate and anger

{i can't stand the shouting
still hear the echoes}

there’s no use of
containment, entrapment,
their love leaks out either way,
through minuscule holes and cuts,
worn down from bearing and using

i don't know what's worse
the floor falling to pieces
underneath us
or a shattered marriage

{seeing past the breaks
isn't pretty}

i can't stop myself
from falling deeper
sinking into that
pool of misery

back in time

yesterday brought lovely memories
of how simple life used to be
we never paid attention
just selfish creatures as
stuck in our young ways
as the adults
around us
so long
ago

not speaking

i can’t speak, can’t breathe
the words die under my tongue
air is dragged away by the
cold winter storm outside

feel the rush of desperation
have to break free of
my own expectations
only witling away at
my weakened gates

a whisper nearly breaks
through driving by a force
i’ve grown to appreciate

in the morning when light
pushes through the holes

yet i despise the darkness
invading my lands

no one can see the misery
seeping in and my trains
of thought never even
leaving the station

or they’re never on time
and the words get lost
in the act of uttering

being verbose is an
adaptability i haven’t
mastered yet
just a speck of dust
in a pile of dirt
lost to the wind.

down slide

there’s the sensation
that i’m falling
my toes graze the ground
leaving streaks the size
of rain droplets
in my wake

i tap as my world rightens
the western air calms to
a quiet roar rushing

it’s like i’m finely
scratching the surface
of my barriers put in
place by a decimated
structure, brain,
tired of dissolving
and repairing
damaged objects
key to survival

Ohhh Loved the take on paragraph poetry and some of the other structures you're playing with too. I found "travelers stop here" to be both intriguing and ominous.

I also had to catch this stanza and highlight it:
being verbose is an
adaptability i haven’t
mastered yet
just a speck of dust
in a pile of dirt
lost to the wind.

lovely metaphor and imagery killeham!

Also, how are you half way done with NaPo already! Teach me your ways!
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

@alliyah Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to do different things and seeing some of the poetry jams have at least helped give different structures to check out. You’re so sweet, and I’m loving your poems on return.

and I write a bunch during class, so I can get random bursts of inspiration at school

slices

slice life into sections, each a rarity
happy light leaking into its moodier neighbor,
yellows versus purples, a pretty picture,
and combination to the eye.

{emotions have never looked so beautiful}

being benedight is easier in youth
never a stolen word or hated action
but in comes age, with intellectual
conversations, specifically chosen
fights and heady arguments
heated gazes across the room,
invading privacy and beckoning forward
the room reeling of fierce expressions

{grasp onto control is fading}

growing older many not bring maturity
as facing conflicts with hearts feather-light
without pent-up hatred spewing out
but age does give an outlook on how
hopes can turn into achieving those beliefs,
commitments and courage and drive
and the ability to do something.

a tree living

an unknown legend details a tree
wanting for more, branches spread
out desperate for a burst of
something else
beyond her reach,
ever-lasting desire
as envious as Tantalus.

stuck in a forest,
never-ending
role in society,
in a world where
the tree views
these creatures with
movable branches
and leaves the size
of pine needles.

how she longed for
their self-control
and leaving the land
she was confined,
forced sedentary
doomed to watch
with ever-pleading
eyes hidden to
humanity.

past emotions

sentimental novels are so much richer
than modern ones,
that feminine gaze across centuries
of written texts spewing on and on
about gender roles

{she's muted colors, soft
orange and pink,
he's the wind roaring,
bold blues and reds}

catch yourself on retracted words
from people dying to betray
their once concealed ideas.

metaphors of flowers growing
stronger in the sunlight, when
not held back by blinds, owned
by a dominant figure standing
in the shadows.

{can you see them reaching
for the unlimitless sky?}

spun tales of unsung slayers,
emerging from a cruelness
that they will always face
existing forever in the novels
that you care to read.

a full glass

there’s a glass full of
possibilities

they come pouring out
one after the other

{can i be happy?}

skip across the page,
lightness in every
toe tap on the beaming
surface of the sun

{will i fall?}

down into the depths,
weighed down with
failed expectations
dark covering the world

there’s a storm brewing
inside that small cup,
teetering on the edge
of spillage

one wrong rock and
ruin overtakes you,
one right rock and
belief empowers you

{what will it be,
in the end?}

This comment is long overdue. First of all congratulations on having 20 poems! That is super awesome and you should be so proud. Secondly, I wanted to tell you how much I'm loving and enjoying your NaPo. I admire your clean, neat, concise writing style and the way you can innovatively describe the mundane. Your imagery and the feelings they invoke are on point. Keep wriitng and looking forward to the rest of your NaPo!

@bluewaterlily Thank you so much! Congrats on writing 16 yourself ;). You are so seeet! I’ve seriously been writing about random objects in ether my house or things I see at schools, so I’m glad you’re liking them so far! Keep writing yourself! I’ve been loving your NaPo as well.

We’ll see where this next week of April takes me!

reminiscing my education

i can’t picture death, receding breath,
oxygen levels decimated
choke on carbon-filled air

{i guess I learned something after all}

my education was part laughing about
wasteful objects floating on calm seas, or
desiring an escape from a miserable fate,
death by monstrous calculus problems

chemistry contained all these chemicals
and advice for later use. starting a fire
is easy but make sure to keep a window
cocked open for the smoke to escape

{breathing that in didn’t do me any good}

i love to delve back into simpler times,
on terms of society, all ruffled dresses
and painted faces and ugly wigs, to cover
up the bruises underneath skin,
stuffed flowers in pockets, dilute the
stench of dead bodies in backyards,
all lost to history.

A snowball in the face is surely the perfect beginning to a lasting friendship.
