Thanks @alliyah! Now to do my last five poems to complete NaPo.

26

you're addicted to instability.
sometimes i believe that you will change,
finding solace in the world between
flying higher than the angels
and sinking into a swamp of depression.

i can call for you all i want,
plead for you to stay on earth,
but you seem to forget the pain
of living in the extremes,
so you ignore me
and show off all your scars on instagram
because they can give you
the sympathy you crave.

27 What I Would Do For You

I was never a praying man
until I watched your lips say grace.

Heaven seemed like just a silly fantasy
until your hand grasped mine,
and I knew Hell was wherever you were not.

I've never said a Hail Mary,
never stepped into that confession booth,
but now that I have an angel,
I would confess to every priest to keep you.

Spoiler! :
This was inspired by a misheard lyric. This song is in the rotation where I work. For some reason, the first time I heard it, I thought the line was "You're the only prayer I need to make me confess". After about 5000 repeat listens, I realized that I was definitely wrong but that this was more interesting.

Once again, from the poetic line generator: the dreamers of love sing beside the river,

And they pray
And they pray
And they pray
Will you find somebody for me,
yeah will you find somebody for me?

Every soul in this dying town
came to dance in the river one night
For a minute there, the loneliness
was disguised by the shadows in the moonlight

There's only heartbreak in these streets
And you can't really cure it with a drink,
So here in the river they make themselves clean
And raise their arms to their maker to sing

And they pray
And they pray
And they pray
Will you find somebody for me?
Oh, will you find somebody for me?

So somehow this turned into like a half-finished song thing? I don't really have time to flesh it out right now, but here's an awesomely bad recording (complete with weird background noise my laptop sometimes makes: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0Ixw9hWHVgQ

Random Poetic Line: the seasons of ourselves touch in your forgotten dreams

29

Do you remember who we were
in the beginning?
when leaves and snow were something
to play in, not something to tame?

Do you ever dream of rushing creeks
and playing tag in the summer
and imagining that we could be
the next Olympic gymnast or Britney Spears?

I suppose that summer is over now
and that I am but an afterthought to you,
as you only come to my mind
on days when the chill is too much to bear
without remembering I was happy once.

In the winter, when we are nothing
but aching bones and memories,
will you remember my name?

Spoiler! :
Wow, this is not the first "childhood nostalgia" poem I've written, nor even the best (see Goodbye, Paradise or Gone, but like I literally teared up writing this.

And so we have reached the end. Here is where I lament the poems I could have written had I had more time and energy. I'll wrap this up with an expansion of a fragment from the last page.

30-Junk Poetry

I want to write something
that looks so rich that you long
to sink your teeth into it
like a child at a dessert buffet.

I want to write something
that hits your tongue,
then your entire brain
like ice cream eaten too quickly.

I want to write something
that sinks into the crevices
of your lips like too much salt,
that burning you can rinse away
but never forget.

I want to write something
that slides down your throat
like a sugar-clogged soft drink,
only to dissolve into your fat cells
and become part of you forever.

Spoiler! :
Inspired by eatiing too much junk food lately.

So the river one, with the praying,

I really like the flow of the piece and I think the repetition works well! I think it needs to be a little longer because the pace is faster with the repetition, but I like where you're going with it.

27 is like, Oh My God, that is sooo cheesy, but I knew if someone wrote something like that, I would take it as a challenge and be loving every second of it! That is exactly the type of thing to write when you're totally bored out of your mind and want to try to make someone blush their brains out.

26 is... ouch. Wow. That one is a hard one to read.

Love the content, but that one gets rather touching rather fast and I know there are things to improve, but I've known too many people like that and I really like the poem you've managed to get down.

Thanks for the comments @Aley!

Yeah, 26 is about a friend of mine and I know I've written about her before (and better), so that one's pretty personal. I do want to flesh out the river one, but songs always take me a little bit longer so I'll have to think about it.

niteowl wrote:it is 5:30 am and i am sleepless,
watching the waxing gibbous moon
shine through the haze.
sleep has eluded me tonight,
and once again, i do not know why.

I feel like the fourth line in this is rather useless, but it could easily be reworked into something more enticing like talking about "dreams" or "rest" rather than sleep since we start out with sleeplessness. I mean, obviously sleep eludes the speaker, they are sleepless.

If you do think about it and get it longer, let me know! I would love to see the finished product.

When we are children we seldom think of the future. This innocence leaves us free to enjoy ourselves as few adults can. The day we fret about the future is the day we leave our childhood behind.
