Poetry Prompt Contest: Week 1

Okay we've made it a week into NaPo! Anyone up to a casual poetry prompt driven contest? I'll give 500 points to the best "#jammified poem" this week that makes usage of rhyme in some way.

To participate:
> Your poem must mention jam or jelly in some way, the theme does not have to be jam / jelly though.
> Your poem must use rhyme in some way.
> You must post a link to your poem right here.
> Your poem is due by the end of the day April 11th.
> Watch out for more casual poetry contests during #NaPo! :)

So before I announce the winners! Here's a few of my favorite quotations from these poems which you should all take the time to read!! :)

>>>Sweet jam, sweet butter, cloying on the tongue.
Saying 'u r right' is like convulsing,
ridiculous cult rites for wound-soothing.

@Liminality here

I miss our jam jar conversations - river bound,
shoes off, blanket out, basket downed,
sweets melting in mellow mouths as we skip stones,

@Rydia here

the condensation of her sweat collects
(like morning dew at every hour of
the day) around this tightening jam jar's neck,
yet stills she thinks it fits just like a glove.

@whatchamacallit here

We fed
on squash till we were sick, but still the whales
(the biggest ones) continued to assail
our porch.

@fortis here

These were all really great reads, I recommend checking them out!! :)

So, the winner of this first contest is .....
drum roll please

Rydia's

wonderful jammy poem! Congratulations!!
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

Mini Contest 2

Poetry Prompt Contest: 2

For this week's casual poetry prompt contest you are challenged to do some sort of audio poem! :) Last year we did a whole thread of spoken word-type poems and you can go for that, or just make a poem that's fun to read out loud! Winner will get 500 points!

Tips: Rhyme & Sound Devices are your friends! As well as ... dramatic pauses! :D I definitely recommend using vocaroo too as an easy way to record. this article I wrote on slam poetry might also give you some inspo but you also don't necessarily need to do a slam poem, it can just be one you'd like to read / record! :)

To participate:
> Poem should be written in April.
> Poem needs to be posted by the end of the day April 21.
> Post a link to your poem here or as a comment here.

Good luck! Can't wait to read / hear your next poem!

Mini Contest 2 Results!!

Alright! I have judged mini-contest 2, which had 3 fabulous entries which I really really loved listening too, seriously you're all really talented and I listened to all of these several times just because I loved them and a bunch of the lines are still rattling around in my ears. :)

For this contest I've decided the winner is ...

whatchamacallit

(@whatchamacallit) with her poem "Finders, keepers; losers, weepers." which is filled with twisting, compelling imagery about the fear of losing objects &/or losing oneself.

and huge thank you to @Liminality for the philosophical robot musings in her poem "[dead bots tell no tales]" which was filled with fun sound-devices and interesting turns of phrases

as well as our other entry @niteowl with her song napo 7 which was also very catchy and had a great combination of nostalgic / summery imagery mixed with a relatable narrative.

Great job you all! <3

Mini Challenge 3

alliyah wrote:
Poetry Prompt Contest: 3

For the last week's casual poetry prompt contest you finally get a ~structure~ prompt! I am challenging you! to try your hand at writing a cinquain. :)

There's a nice article on YWS over here that explains two versions of cinquains - the syllable structure is always (2, 4, 6, 8, 2) for the five lines - and then there are different requirements for each line, that can be a little flexible as needed. Here's the version modeled after the American Cinquain form from Adelaide Crapsey's poetry:

Spoiler! :
Line 1 is a single Noun or Description of Title (can be modified with "the" or "these" etc.) (2 syllables)
Line 2 is a further Description of Line 1 or Title (4 syllables)
Line 3 is an Action (6 syllables)
Line 4 is a Feeling or Effect (8 syllables)
Line 5 is a Synonym of Line 1 or Synonym of Title (2 syllables)

The winner will get 500 points again! :)

To Participate:
> Poem should be posted by the end of the day May 1
> You can enter your poem, or give a link to it as a comment to this thread.
> You have to follow the syllable structure of a cinquain
> Have fun!

Good luck! I hope you give this a try! Cinquains are really fun, I promise!
