July is coming up. It's summer, it's Camp NaNoWriMo, it's everything you've ever dreamed of. But writing every day is difficult -- it's something we aren't used to. As writers, though, we should always be trying to form new, better habits to make our craft easier on us.

So why not start small: 100 words a day.

I'll be running this contest in partnership with my club 100 Words Daily. I strive to help others create better writing habits, and so I'm basically giving away prizes. 100 words a day for 30 days, and you've got it in the bag.

It doesn't even have to be prose! You can write 100 words of poetry, or essays, or screenplays. It just has to be 100 words of creative writing of some sort.

Wait, it's that easy?

Yep, it's that easy. Write 100 words daily from July 1st to July 30th, and record it in the club. Link to your progress thread here so myself and my volunteer judges can keep track of how you're doing, and at the end of the month we'll tally it all up and hand out the prizes.

All writing must be recorded by July 31st!

Are there rules?

Just one, really:

Honesty. This contest is being run on an honor system, and if I hear of dishonesty for the sake of winning, I reserve the right to disqualify any contestant. Just do your best, find time to write, and don't worry about writing a thousand perfect words. I won't be mad if you fudge one day because of changed plans or how busy you are (trust me, I get it), but there will be no tolerance if someone fudges the entire month just to get the prize.

So what is the prize?

All contestants who complete the month get to choose one of three prizes:

- 400 points (generously donated by guest judges)

OR

- 2 reviews (by myself and, again, my generous guest judges)

OR

- a book or anthology cover (by myself, only for personal use, not licensed for commercial use)

Where do I sign up?

Right here! Post in this thread to let me know if you'll be participating, then head over to 100 Words Daily and make your progress thread for the contest. (If you already have a thread there, you can use that one!)

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here as well.

Happy writing!

Question, if you miss the 100 words one day but do 200 the next, does it count?

I mean, is it about the 3,000 at the end of the month or is it about the 100 words a day?

Like I said, this contest is about making good habits. The goal is not 3000 words for July -- it's 100 words a day. If you want to try for 3000 words in July, that's fine, but it won't win you the contest.

I'm willing to let one or two days slide -- you don't even have to make it up! -- as long as you communicate with me and let me know about the circumstances. If you know you'll be unable to write for longer periods, this might not be the time for you to sign up.

I will also be running this contest again in a few months if enough people show interest in it this time around, so you can always sign up for a later round.

Squills writing is creative writing -- you're writing your own articles and whatnot -- so I'll count it! As long as you're working towards your own creative writing goal, it counts!

Me too! So if any writing toward your creative writing goal counts, does this include prewriting, provided it's, like, writing (as opposed to drawing a map)? Like if you write a character's backstory or something?

I'm going to count prewriting as creative writing, too!

Like I mentioned, this contest is primarily about making good habits. If prewriting is a habit that you're trying to form (that is, 100 words or so of prewriting a day), then go for it! I'll count anything that you'd count.

I'm not going to officially join because I know I couldn't keep up, but I just wanted to say I found this very inspiring and I hope it becomes a regular thing!
