YWS RADIO THEATER

Spoiler! :
Not officially endorsed by The Young Writers Society

You listened to Jamie's Coin and loved it, and now it's time to pick and perform another script! You have three weeks - until July 11th, to submit your 15-25 page radio script for consideration . To submit, email your script as an attachment to elinorbrynn@youngwriterssociety.com. If you win, your script will be performed on a live podcast to take place the weekend of August 15th-17th (exact time TBD)

Don't know anything about radio dramas? Here's what the original post has to say.

Radio plays - theater without a visual component - were popular in the early 1930s and 40s. As there were no visuals, they had to rely purely on sound to create a compelling story. While they disappeared with the advent of television, radio plays remain to this day a unique and interesting form of storytelling, and today is your chance to dabble in it.

Please follow the standard formatting outlined by this article. You don't have to download Celtx for free, but if you do it'll format it automatically for you!

More advice from the first post:

If you're stuck on ideas, try adapting a short story! This article is a great resource as well. If you're having trouble visualizing the finished product, check out this classic example of a radio drama. Remember that since there are no visuals, the dialogue and the sounds are very important!

Good luck, and I look forward to reading your entries!

All our dreams can come true — if we have the courage to pursue them.

From what I assume, an address or phone number isn't needed! Right, Eli? :)

Wow, what happened to your 8-month nap? ;)

@Iggy, I'm not Elinor, but I'd say YWS internet safety rules apply for this one, too, even if the script will only be seen by the cast and crew. :) So no phone number or email!

Do you have any idea how many more radio plays will be performed? Is this something that's going to be a normal thing, or just over the summer, or what?

There's only time this summer to do one more. Then you probably won't see it again until next summer, and I'm thinking this will be a summer thing where you'll see 1-2 each year since now is when I have time

Quick question: can the script be a variation from a famous original?

For example, my english class has recently studied Shakespeare's Macbeth, and I was so inspired that I wrote the first Act of the play, only I set my version as if it was happening today, not last century.

Shakespeare would be okay since all of his plays are public domain! If you want to retell an older story, just make sure it's public domain and not copyrighted

How long should the script be?
An angel, a knight, a man who will bring light to where there is only darkness, I am the Morning Star, the Bringer of Light, hail to me as I am King Lucifer!

Whoa, another one? You're on a roll, Elinor! Would it be presumptuous to enter the script-writing part?
