I am starting a zine, a small magazine, called Paper Lantern. Paper lantern's symbolize brightness and love. Paper Lantern literary magazine is a quarterly nonprofit magazine whose mission is to illuminate the world and allow it to discover that there are some remarkable ideas and dreams squirming around the hearts and minds of some talented thinkers and artists.
Submissions are now open. We read submissions on a rolling basis. We are not a paying market.

Submit previously unpublished work only. If you are sending us work that appears on your website, blog, or a self-publishing site, please remove it prior to submitting to us. Send us no more than five poems and one 10,000 word story. We accept multiple submissions of photography and creative artwork. Please paste in the body of an email your poetry/ story, preceded by a cover letter. If your poem requires special formatting, you may then, and please only then, also include an attachment. Please send all photography/ creative art attached in the email.

Please identify on your subject line what it is you are submitting ex.- "POETRY SUBMISSION". Submissions without a header will be deleted unread.

Include a bio (all bios are subject to editing). Also include a URL to your blog or website, if applicable. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but not preferred. If your work is accepted elsewhere please inform us immediately.

We aim to respond to all submissions within 10 days of receipt (usually less). We will not respond (accept or decline) with a form letter and we will comment on submissions whenever possible. If your submission is declined, we ask that you please wait a minimum of three months before submitting again.

If your work is accepted at PAPER LANTERN, you agree to grant us First North American Serial Rights, all archival rights, plus the rights to reprint in any future anthologies. Upon publication all rights revert back to the author.

Our taste is eclectic. We want submission that move us, a strong sense of imagery, emotion, with interesting and surprising use of language, words that inspire. We want fresh. We want our eyes and hearts to light up as we read the page.

Established and new authors are encouraged to submit. Experimental works are fine, randomness is fine also. However, we do not want experimental and random just for the sake of calling it such.

Submissions that ignore these guidelines (or parts of these guidelines) will likely be declined.

Our guidelines are subject to change. We suggest reviewing them prior to submitting.

Submissions and other correspondence should be sent to: paperlanternliterarymagazine@gmail.com

How will you handle contracts with people under 18?

If you'll email us letting us know that you are under 18, we will send you a form to print out, have your parents/ guardian sign, scan, and e-mail back to us. We really would love some rising writers to be published in our publication.

Awesome! Good luck getting pieces. :)

Do you have a website we can check out in the meantime? And any idea when the first issue will be?
