"Carry on" sounds like a British phrase. "Caul" reminds me of cauliflower, so - a field of cauliflowers. Thus, Mr. Caulfield is a farmer of cauliflower, and someone is telling him to carry on with his work because gosh darn it they're hungry for some white broccoli.
