I need some new books to read but I don't know what. This is some of the recent ones I have read.

Empress Orchid
The lovely bones
The colour purple
1984

Please nothing to fantasy or that involves vampires. Thanks

Read Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. Kind of dark, but funny and moving at the same time.

Also 'House of Leaves' - Can't recommend this enough. Look it up and see if it interests you.

White Noise by Don Delillo is good.

If you like sci - fi Philip K Dick is amazing.

Have you read The Wasp Factory? Again pretty dark but getting to the end is seriously worth it.

David Foster Wallace - Girl With Curious Hair or Infinite Jest. If you're a keen writer this guy is extremely inspiring. All his characters have real depth and are completely different while being believable.

The Tesseract by Alex Garland. Have you read The Beach? If not read that then read this. This guy is incredible at description.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Beautiful.

The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. This man is the master of the simile.

Thank you.

I shall not be looking up Chandler. I was not a big fan of the big sleep to be honest, put some of the others look interesting. Thanks again

I was going to post something until I read that you didn't like fantasy ... then I was like, *oh*. (Gah, modern language. We just can't help using 'like'.)
Sorry about this. Umm ...
Er ...
Ummm ...
I'll try to get back to you.
The POTATO of DOOM

A thousand times it calls your name
A thousand times you hear it
And fools are those who heed its call
But fools are those who fear it.

The Interesting Thoughts of Edward Monkton

I always knew that deep down in every human heart, there is mercy and generosity. No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.
