It was supposed to be a normal hiking trip and picnic. But this forest is decidedly not normal, and these characters might not be so ordinary either...

Character list:
@Liminality, Zhang Xiong Xiong
Spoiler! :
Name: Zhang Xiong Xiong (Zhang is the surname; Xiong Xiong I'd imagine is homophonous with 'teddy bear')

Age: 18

Goals, desires: thinks having their powers would be a great way to help people, but wants to know more about said powers first - so they can use them better

First impressions: looks super stoic and reserved, serious (often comically so)

Hidden depths: often thinks for a long time about pointless things, daydreams a lot, generally lives a rather haphazard life, close friends have as hard a time making sense of him as total strangers

Physical appearance: short, floppy black hair; hooded grey eyes with a bit of a distant look to them, tall, ramrod straight posture with a lithe build

Strengths: kind, practical when it comes down to it, persistent

Weaknesses: uncommunicative, often dishonest

Gender and pronouns: male, he/him

Power: invisibility (so he can become invisible, but it will seem as though someone else has just walked in with a fresh cup of coffee - and if no one else is around, well.. . it's a bit conspicuous, isn't it? so he can probably only get away with it in crowded areas)

Scent: coffee

@AlmostImmortal, Zylphia
Spoiler! :
Name: Zylphia

Age: 17

Goals, desires: Wants to use her powers to fight for civil rights. Wants to find who gave them their powers.

First impressions: Very chill and laid-back. Often just goes with it.

Hidden depths: Very mischievous and tends to cause minor inconveniences for the fun of it.

Physical appearance: About average height, really frizzy and puffy ginger hair, pale skin covered in freckles, bottle green eyes.

Strengths: Very level-headed, never gets into arguments, good at seeing other perspectives.

Weaknesses: Sometimes doesn't take things seriously, can get petty if someone manages to make her mad.

Gender and pronouns: Demigirl, they/she

Power: Telekinesis

Scent: Lemon

@SilverNight, Mireya Kaltrina
Spoiler! :
Name: Mireya Kaltrina

Age: 17

Goals, desires: Very much a teenage activist, but also a bit of an anarchist. If she’s not advocating for anything at the moment, then she works to make things as chaotic as possible. Could care less about where her powers came from, she just likes that they’re there.

First impressions: She’s very blue, so her appearance makes people do a double take when they first see her. If they talk to her, though, they’d definitely think she was a wild card.

Hidden depths: She doesn’t take things seriously and she’s fine with that, but she does want to get closer to others and have real relationships. Being a rebel at heart makes that hard though, because if she doesn’t drive people away, she’s nervous about forming bonds and being vulnerable, and so she’s never had good friendships.

Physical appearance: Oh, dear. Blue everything: eyes, hair, outfit, earrings, boots. Her hair is naturally chestnut, but it hasn’t looked that way for years since she had it dyed aqua blue. She’s 5’4” and kinda smol, with the physique of a gymnast.

Strengths: Tough, fierce, brave, not afraid to take risks, very bold.

Weaknesses: A little sarcastic, unable to stay serious in an crisis (and probably just enjoys the chaos instead of doing anything), doesn’t think about consequences, reckless.

Gender and pronouns: Female, she/her

Power: Mireya controls electric current— she can drain electric power, interrupt the current or break a circuit so power can’t reach appliances, and even sometimes store small amounts of energy in herself. She can’t create electric power, so she has to use what’s around her (wires, cables, electronic devices, lightning strikes in thunderstorms), so if she doesn’t have any stored power or there’s nothing nearby, she won’t be able to do anything. If she concentrates, she could release her stored energy as one electric bolt to fire at someone, though she’s never done this before.

Scent: Pine trees

@Spearmint, Thomas (Tommy) Larchyn
Spoiler! :
Name: Thomas (Tommy) Larchyn

Age: 16

Goals, desires: Tommy's honestly pretty content with his life as it is, though he does crave adventure sometimes. Pretty much the only thing he'd use his powers for is to play pranks on people, but if he's able to use them to help others with no cost to himself, he'd do that too.

First impressions: "Eek! Is it a squirrel?"
When people first meet Tommy, with his energy and hair color and unfortunately-shaped backpack (it's a brown blob that, from the right angle, has a remarkable resemblance to an acorn), they can't help but be reminded of a squirrel scampering around. Thankfully, once they get to know him, most people see Tommy as much more than a woodland creature (we'll ignore that one aunt who always gives him squirrel-themed cards for his birthday >.>).

Hidden depths: Despite his enthusiastic, happy-go-lucky appearance, Tommy does have a serious side as well-- he's just more reluctant to show it. But his family and close friends are really important to him, and Tommy would do almost anything for them, even if it means setting down his optimism and energetic-ness for a bit.

Physical appearance: Russet-brown hair, lively dark-brown (almost black) eyes. Slightly shorter than average. (Oh yeah, and about that backpack-- despite its acorn-ness, Tommy's rather fond of it because it's something his father sewed for him when he was younger (when Tommy was twelve, he'd had a bit of an obsession with handmade crafts). Anyways, the backpack's surprisingly sturdy and has held up for four years!)

Strengths: Tommy's an unrelenting optimist and is always open to meet new people and try new things. He's also loyal to his friends and if they're feeling down, he'll try to cheer them up as much as he can.

Weaknesses: He can be rather flighty and inconsistent, often picking up hobbies only to drop them a week later. Tommy's not the most altruistic person either-- he'll help his family and friends, but only assist strangers if it won't cost him anything.

Gender and pronouns: Male, he/him

Power: He can manipulate what people see in mirrors-- for example, he could make your reflection wave at you even if you're just standing still. Tommy can also make shapes and letters appear in mirrors, but they won't be there in real life.

Scent: Sea breeze

It was morning, and the air was crisp and clean. Xiong Xiong surveyed the neat rows of pine trees that went all along the hiking trail. They were tall pine trees, much taller than he was, and he knew he was plenty tall already. He wondered if it was possible to measure tree heights in people heights, and people heights in tree heights. If it were, he believed the pine tree he had stopped under was about 1.5 times a Xiong Xiong.

He had joined this hiking club in their town a long time ago, largely on a whim, because he had seen a poster on the town square noticeboard and thought it looked pretty. Now, people came and went from the club, but currently there were four of them, himself included. Occasionally Xiong Xiong forget there was only four of them and raised five fingers whenever they had to get a ticket to somewhere, if only because five was just a number that came to him more naturally than four. It made sense, you know, because his mother had a superstition about four being a 'bad luck number' and though he wasn't superstitious himself, that belief seemed to have rubbed off on him.

He stroked his chin ponderously, looking up at the pine tree. This really was a peaceful locale. He saw a bird's nest hanging from a branch, just a short distance away from his head. The sound of chirping filled the air.

Xiong Xiong hefted up the picnic basket once again, his arms no longer sore and ready to continue carrying their pack all the way up the hilly forest. It was heavy. He had packed lots of delicious snacks inside. Some of them were packets of dried seaweed his colleagues at work gave him after coming home from vacation. He had also packed some sandwiches he had made himself in his tiny kitchen, just the night before, right after he had gotten off from work. He smiled to himself. It made him feel good to cook for others, even if sometimes he messed things up and the kitchen utensils started popping!

Ready to get going, he turned around to check on the others.

Mireya greatly enjoyed hiking and did it often, so it made sense she was part of a hiking club. She’d done gymnastics and some martial arts classes for years, so it also made sense that she normally walked around with grace and composure. But for whatever reason, she was still incredibly clumsy whenever she hiked up a slope of any kind.

So she wasn’t exactly thrilled when she saw a hill up ahead on the trail.

Nevertheless, Mireya trudged over to where Xiong Xiong was waiting for them. She was pretty short to begin with, but she felt absolutely tiny next to him. Her fathers often called her their pixie because of her height and blue appearance. But while almost everything about her was indeed varying shades of blue, the style of her clothes was too punk to be anything like what a fairy would wear— and yet, too fairy-like in its color to be punk. The paradox was rather confusing.

Mireya eyed the slope ahead with a slightly frustrated look. She couldn’t cook to save her life, so her fathers had made some cookies for her to share with the group. But she’d forgotten to tell them there were only four people coming along this time, so they’d made cookies for over a dozen people. When she’d brought that up to them, as the cookies were being packed into what felt like a million plastic bags, they had cheerfully said that at least the group wouldn’t be going hungry. Now Mireya was carrying them in a navy canvas bag over her shoulder, and wishing she’d asked her parents to put them inside a container instead. If she tripped too often on the hill, they’d be all crumbly by the time they were at their destination.

Hopefully she wouldn’t ruin their picnic later.

Zylphia strolled just behind Xiong Xiong and Mireya, hands resting on the back of their neck just like Killua from Hunter x Hunter, a bag of tarts hitting them on the back whenever they took a step. These hills were nothing compared to the sharp cliffs she had to traverse to get home.

That's why hiking sounded so appealing, with her family so hectic right now. Her older sister just suffered an injury and couldn't compete in America's Got Talent as they planned since last year. Now, Zylphia had no idea if they'd be ethically compromised if they went ahead and competed without her and elected to participate in the hiking club to think things through.

Were they hoping that a stray injury would take them out, so they didn't have to make a decision? What? No! Of course not.

Okay, maybe a little.

But that didn't matter now. Their club was going to have a nice picnic; they'd eat the Bakewell Tarts that her twin, Tavish, and his girlfriend made, and they wouldn't get all mopey over the thought of abandoning Malvis to fulfil her dreams.

Good? Good.

Tommy was about... 2.5 pine trees, or maybe around 3.5 Xiong Xiongs behind the others, due to the fact that he'd been constantly stopping to pick up interesting pinecones and rocks along the path. He bent down to examine a colorful patch of flowers for a moment, and when he stood back up he realized the others were almost out of sight. "Hey guys, wait for me!" With his misshapen acorn backpack flopping back and forth, Tommy ran to catch up.

He'd originally joined the hiking club on a whim (the poster looked cool!), but he'd stayed for the snacks. Somehow, every single picnic he'd gone to had managed to feel like a feast. Last time, Tommy had tried to contribute something too, but unfortunately, the homemade lemon-carrot-walnut muffins didn't taste the best (they also might have been the cause of one member's stomachache... oops). The rest of the club agreed to put Tommy on strictly store-bought drink duty from then on, so now his backpack was full of water bottles and juice boxes.

Tommy supposed he could've asked his mom or dad to bake something instead, but his mom was usually too busy with work and his dad, erm, wasn't the best at baking. (The only thing his dad could cook was ham and cheese sandwiches, but, uh, without actually using the stove or anything. So basically cold bread with cheese and ham.) Tommy winced just thinking about his dad's latest creation, and decided it was probably a good thing for him to just bring along drinks.

Once he'd reached the rest of the group, Tommy turned to look at the hill up ahead. "So when do you guys think we'll reach the picnic area? I'm getting kinda hungry." He eyed the bag of tarts Zylphia was carrying.

"I'm hoping it's not too far away, but I don't have the map to tell you for sure." Mireya sighed. She'd do just fine with a bit of distance, but it would be a serious problem if it was all slopes. The group had seen her in enough embarrassing slips and stumbles already. She really didn't need to add any more to their list of them.

What had she been thinking, taking a canvas bag? Everyone else had been wise enough to take along a backpack-- even if it was a weird acorn one that the owner was inseparable from. Carrying the cookies on her back would be less risky because she was less likely to fall backwards. But a canvas bag would swing in front of her the moment she pitched forwards on the hike. That wouldn't be good at all.

Mireya internally groaned. This was getting harder the more she thought about it.

"I think we should get moving, though," she said. "The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll get there."

Xiong Xiong nodded sagely. "Yes, time is linear and more time will not appear in between other bits and pieces of time."

He started walking in the direction of their planned picnic site on the hill, satisfied that the others were following behind him. He pulled out the map, now folded into a paper frog, from his back pocket and looked at it. "I think we should be able to make it by lunch. It's not too far off."

The weather seemed nice and clear. A blue sky showed behind white puffy clouds, with the morning sun shining. For a minute, he contemplated making conversation, lest the party fall into awkward silence. What could he talk about? The trees? The temperature? It did get quite cool at high altitudes around here. He had been hiking here once before, though much of his memory of the place had been displaced by later events. Such as his grocery list. And the search for his lost sandals.

His flask of coffee shuddered a little in the picnic basket, and he hurriedly stuffed the map back into his pocket, freeing up his other hand to stabilize it. Then, he turned to Zylphia and asked "What's your opinion on trail mix? Because I haven't made any."
