The word triggered another rush of words from Rea. "An archivist? What's that? Do you collect books, lore, knowledge, dredges of civilizations long lost to the endless march of time? Words of ancients, eternally preserved in the words immortalised through songs and stories of ages past?"

A small, insignificant, never-listened-to part of her was begging her to calm down, register that they were in fact in danger, and refrain from saying anything silly.
Of course, that part wasn't listened to for a reason. People like Rea, who sought to amass the wisdom of worlds in their head, never stooped so low as petty things like tact. That would only hinder their research.
"Could we use these rings to travel to any world? I'm just asking out of curiousity, of course." She tried to look as innocent as possible while she said it.

Sean blinked at the last bit of information that the traveller had revealed. He'd been about to retaliate on how he'd seen plenty of crazy demonic things feeding on hapless humanoids before and the fact that this guy couldn't possibly judge the capabilities of a spaceship to reach a location without knowing anything about how far said location on. But now...he needed something else clarified immediately.

"So Zest, as in like lemon zest?" asked Sean.

Zest moved like he was about to answer Rea's questions, but he faltered when heard Sean's.

"...What's a lemon?" he hesitantly asked.

Runi gasped. "You don't know what a lemon is?"

"Should I?" Zest said, sounding very bewildered. He glanced between Sean and Runi, probably trying to figure out if he had just been insulted.

Runi opened her mouth to speak, paused, and then closed her mouth again. That was a very good question. Should someone from another part of the universe know an Earth food?

...Runi knew she was just avoiding thinking of the pressing issues right now, but she preferred questioning if lemons were intergalactic common knowledge.

Zest looked back at Rea.

"I'm rusty," Zest said, "but I like collecting records of different worlds. And the rings can take you to any world that also has one, but you need the right combination on their dialing device. If you have the wrong combination, you'll end on the wrong world."

Raleigh frowned. They didn't know what a lemon was either, but it wasn't like they were about to ask. They were curious, of course. But there was already a lot going on, and lemons weren't very relevant to their situation.
Frowning, Raleigh turned towards Zest. "What world did you just come from?" they asked. "And what do you mean by rusty?"

"Well isn't that convenient," said Sean, feeling the urge to stomp on the floor in frustration. "Not the lemon thing. That's pretty justified, I didn't know about lemons either, not till I went to Earth for a holiday once. Not the most developed place, but it has some good food. Anyway, so, if as you say there has to be ring at the destination planet for us to use that, I'm toast. Old tech like that just doesn't exist anymore over there. Any nearby planets you know to get to where I can maybe hitch a ride on a passing space cruiser?"

Zest sighed. It was a tired, frustrating kind of sigh. Runi didn't know anyone here all that well, but she felt like she could safely guess that Zest was growing tired of Sean thinking this galaxy was more advanced than it actually was.

"You're not listening to me," he said to Sean, the frustration very much evident. "Ships like that don't exist here. Planets like that don't exist, either. The few ones that supposedly did exist are nothing more than millennia old stories."

Zest turned to Raleigh.

"The old texts I've found called the world Rinvale," Zest said. "I'm the only person on it and not native to the planet, so I've been calling it that instead."

He faltered for a moment.

"...I used to be employed as an archivist," Zest awkwardly said. "Now I'm not. I still look at histories when I can and try documenting my own, but it's not the same."

"Hmm," Rea said thoughtfully. The implications of this conversation were huge; interplanetary travel would change everything in her world. If they could perhaps establish trade with other planets...

But one little thing kept nagging her. She referred to her notes, then glanced up at Zest. "Wraiths. Are they sentient? They must be to an extent, at least, if the people here can broker some kind of deal with them. What happens to a wraith when it doesn't feed on life? And where do they come from? Do they just wander around, or come by every now and then for... tribute? Most importantly, can I get a specimen to study?"

Zest was silent for a moment. He knew the answer to that first question better than most people did, but he also knew what answer he was supposed to give. He needed to make sure this group of the people knew that the wraith were a threat. If they thought for even a second that they could reason with the wraith worshiped by this planet, it would be too late. A wraith that fed well could easily move faster than a healthy human.

"They are sentient," Zest admitted. "They can make decisions and form their own communities. But even though they appear to be as conscious of their actions are you are of yours, they're driven by hunger. If a wraith doesn't feed for an extended period of time, they die. I don't know their origins-"

It was a lie, but a lie he knew they would never realize.

"-but they currently live in their hive ships. They 'cull' planets every so often to replenish their food supplies, and, with worshiping planets, occasionally come to collect their sacrifices. They'll do the same here."

He didn't touch on the specimen question. The wording, even though he understand the curiosity behind it, made him feel sick.

"Speaking of the wraith coming here," the violet-haired woman said. "Shouldn't we be preparing for them arriving? Like we know that Vivi's calling them, so..."

Zest thought for a moment. The storm was still raging outside, but it was lessening now. "We can't do much right now. The wraith don't know you know what's going on, so they'll wait until the storm is completely over to take you. If we want to avoid getting culled, we need to leave as soon as there's no more lightning. In the meantime, we need to pretend that we plan on staying here—we can't let Vivi know that we're aware of what's going on."

"No offence, but this whole are just seems very out of touch with anything to do with technology," said Sean, letting out a sigh, "this is probably going to have to be done the hard way."

"At any rate your waiting ideas seem to be the only course of action here, so there's not much choice. I still can't believe our hostess would do such a thing, but I wouldn't blame her either given the situation you present. At any rate, the wraith don't seem like they are worth worrying too much about. I've fought much scarier things in my time. Its technically my job."

"Don't underestimate them," Raleigh says to Sean, quietly. "If they've conquered planets, who knows what they're capable of? We shouldn't try to fight them outright. Not until we've a better idea of what we're up against." They say all of this as if they didn't have half a dozen daggers hidden on their person.
"But, uh, I do agree on waiting." They drum their hands nervously on the table. "At least until the lightning stops, like Zest said." A pause. Raleigh hands stop drumming, and looks at Zest. "Though I'd certainly like to hear how you know all of this."

Zest sighed. He was tired of explaining himself, and tired of talking in general. He was far from quiet when he traveled to other worlds, but he wasn't used to talking for so much for such a long period of time. He was tired of trying to make the others scared of the wraith, too.

"I grew up in this galaxy," he said, not for the first time and probably not from the last. "Anyone who's lived long enough knows how the wraith work."

There was a moment of silence.

"Well," the purple-haired woman suddenly said, "I wasn't expecting to get kidnapped, but I do have a pack of cards on me. Maybe we could play a game while we wait for the storm to let out?"

"Oh, trust me, I've fought beings bigger than planets before," said Sean, before adding as an afterthought," although I did have help for that one, lost of help. At any rate, something to pass the time seems like it could be quite interesting."

Rea stared with fascination at Sean. Beings bigger than planets? She couldn't even wrap her mind around how massive something like that would have been. But she had to think about the more pressing issue.

"What card game do you have in mind?"

Wren's eyes darted back and forth as the group conversed. There was a lot of information to take in. Questions about the wraiths, galactic travel, and, yes, even the group's knowledge of lemons (and other earth foods for that matter) flew through her brain. She grew warm as her anxiety increased.

Her hair rippled like a wave as Wren shook her head to clear her thoughts. She reminded herself to focus on the current moment, not the "what ifs" that flooded her brain. And definitely not the idea that she and this strange group of people could be toast by the end of the hour.

"Yeah," Wren interjected, ignoring the slight crack in her voice. "What game do you have in mind?"

After a few competitive (at least on Runi's end) of Go Fish!, Vivi emerged from the back room and showed them up to a set of rooms on the second floor of the inn and tavern. Runi couldn't help but notice that Vivi had exactly the right number of rooms for all of them.

She didn't seem to notice that they hadn't touched their drinks. She was clearly flustered. As soon as she escorted them upstairs, she rushed back down to the first floor. She didn't even make sure they had all decided on rooms.

They were standing in a small lounge area now. They were still by the stairs, but the bedrooms were just down a hallway to the right when they were facing the stairs. Runi watched the stairs for another moment after Vivi left.

"...Do you think she knows that we know?" Runi asked.

Zest shook his head.

"She's just worried about having an extra person," Zest said. "She doesn't know that I don't..."

Zest faltered, suddenly seeming to remember he wasn't just talking to himself.

"...have anyone to look for me if I disappear," he awkwardly finished. Runi looked away from the stairs and studied him. He was staring at the window now, or at least looking in its general direction. It was hard to tell with his cloak.

The hesitation could have been because he was lying, but Runi suspected it was because he hadn't meant to share something so personal with a group of strangers.

"The storm is less strong now," Zest abruptly said. "It's still raining and there's some wind, but I don't hear any thunder or see any lightning."
