Welcome to the Roleplay Realm!

Roleplays (RPs) in this section are the middle ground between those of the Storybook Sanctuary and the Roleplay Hollow. While storybooks are essentially collaborative novels and the Hollow includes endless, mostly improvised stories, roleplays in the Realm involve a healthy mix of improvisation and plotting.

For the most part, roleplays here have some kind of reason for the characters ending up in the story. Vengeful gods, supernatural powers, faulty tech...anything is fair game for why your characters are involved in the story. Like the Storybook Sanctuary, the Roleplay Realm typically utilizes an out-of-character (OOC) thread to discuss the events of the story. This is because plotting is necessary to some extent, but also because it's the perfect place to share wonderful jokes and memes about the story.

Controlling other people’s characters isn’t allowed in roleplays. The characters involved in this section tend to be created for other works such as storybooks, original novels, or even fanfiction. While you’re certainly free to create someone brand new for your roleplay, expect to see characters from your favorite YWS works popping up in the Realm!

To expand on that last thought, some roleplays in the RP Realm may show continuity with previous roleplays. Characters who meet in one roleplay might remember each other in the next — they might even reference a previous roleplay in passing. This can add a whole different dynamic to your roleplays, but just like someone may prefer creating a new character rather than using an old one, they may prefer to avoid such interactions. This can be especially jarring if your character doesn't know any of the other characters in a group, so go ahead and ask the roleplay's creator if this is allowed. It's also a good idea just to ask another character's writer if they would remember yours or something that happened before writing a reference.

Overall, think of this forum as a place to flesh out your characters, explore fun, new settings you normally wouldn’t be able to write, and see how your character would react to people outside of their story.
