Okay. It was time.

Jack lifted the rock over to the coconut. It wasn't that heavy compared to the weights he was used to lifting, but he found himself struggling and grunting, mostly because he was just plain exhausted. He felt his grumpiness rise to the surface, mostly because he barely had any sleep last night... all because Eliza was frantic enough to insist there was a ghost around. Ugh.

He lifted the rock high above his head and dropped it. The rock landed on the coconut with a soft thud.

A soft thud. That didn't indicate a crack.

He inspected the coconut, and he was right. Nothing.

This was going to be harder than he thought. Letting out an annoyed sigh, Jack bent down to pick up the rock, ready to try again.

Jack tried. Again and again.

Soft thud, and another soft thud, and another soft thud.

The damn coconut would not crack.

Each time he lifted the rock to drop down, he felt the annoyance and anger bubble to the surface. He had spent so much time keeping his head level on the island, but with the thought every minute realizing that Olivia may very well be dead, and the fact that he received almost zero sleep on an exhausting and traumatic night, he was starting to take his anger out on these damn coconuts.

Why was Susan so helpless? Thud. Why couldn't Eliza just take the damn sleep shift last night? Thud. Why did Moira leave him alone out here, failing right now? Thud.

He wanted to scream in frustration, and he almost did as he threw the rock at the coconut one last time, hitting it at a different angle.

And then—

Crack.

At last.

Susan walked at a fairly sedate pace. It wasn't that she didn't want to walk about fast, just that she didn't want to accidentally walk past the very thing she was looking for, not to mention she was still feeling the effects of yesterday's events. No matter how you sliced it, she had in fact been in a massive shipwreck less than twenty four hours ago and that was definitely taking its toll on her, which was certainly not helped by her instincts that had kept her awake for most of last night.

She sighed. This hadn't turned out anything like she'd envisioned. It was supposed to be a relaxing cruise but now she was stranded in paradise and it wasn't because she was starring in some crazy Hollywood flick. Apparently things like this could happen in real life.

She shook her head. Wandering about any of that wasn't going to be of any help, she had one job at the moment and she was going to do it. She was practically useless as a survivalist so when it just so happened that something that she did know could help, she had to do her best. Otherwise she would just be a liability to everyone and that would feel horrible.

She snuck a glance back at Eliza who was busy working away at the funnel with the sticks. She seemed to be absorbed in her work, probably humming to herself. It was a much better look than the one she'd worn just hours earlier at the discovery of the body of her friend. Susan smiled.

Next, she looked over to try and spot the other two. It looked like Jack and Moira had somehow managed to figure out how to pluck a few of the coconuts and were trying to find a way to crack one open. It looked like Jack had decided to take matters into his own hands as she watched him trying to smash a rock down on one of coconuts, each time staring at it like it had done him some kind of personal offence, it would be almost funny if she didn't think about the fact that he was probably letting out some frustration at the situation they were in.

Speaking of their situation, she needed to stop letting her thoughts wonder and get her thoughts back on track. She focused once more on the sea.

Susan walked past random bits of wood and metal which seemed to be the most common of the things scattered all over the place. It didn't look like it would be an easy search by any means, there was definitely no giant tarp just helpfully floating around which was fair. There really weren't any places you would find a giant tarp except on. Susan put a hand to her head. She was so stupid. There were plenty of tarps if you knew what to look for. All of the lifeboats had at least one covering it which meant there had to be a good fifty odd tarps just floating around the ocean at the moment, unless they'd taken the tarps with them for some reason which she didn't think was likely.

She waded a few feet into the water, hoping to catch any sort of sign of what she wanted, still vary of running into any bodies. After dodging around potential sharp objects and other random debris for a good fifteen minutes or so, she finally saw it. A white sheet of plastic. It has a couple of holes here and there along with a slight burn mark along one side but it would be more than enough to comfortably cover the pit by her estimates.

She quickly waded over to the tarp and carefully pulled it away from the piece of door that it was tangled to. Folding it down to a size that was easier to carry, she waded back out of the water.

She all but ran back towards where she'd left Eliza. It looked like Eliza had made quite a bit of headway with the still and was just about adding the finishing touches to the funnel. Susan slowed down as she approached, not wanting to startle the girl.

At the moment, Eliza appeared to have struck up a sudden conversation with a crab of all things for some reason and she proceeded to push the thing away with her walking stick contraption. Once the crab had wisely decided to move onto a different part of the shore Eliza pushed one final stick into place before declaring 'All done'.

Perfect timing. Got back just in time.

"Hey, good job, that looks amazing. I bring some good news. I managed to locate a tarp. Shall we get to finishing this thing up then?"

Eliza dusted her hands off, looking around for the others. Susan was still looking for a tarp, but she spotted Jack and Moira about twenty feet away. Moira walked away to find something, leaving Jack alone with a coconut in his hands. He attempted to crack it open, but there was no luck.

Eliza was about to raise her hand and call out to him, about to ask how it was going, but Jack did not look like he was in a good mood. In fact, he looked downright angry as he smashed the rock against the coconut. Not wanting to be in the firing range, Eliza pursed her lips and smoothed the tattered edges of her dress. Hopefully, she wouldn't catch a cold.

"Hey, good job, that looks amazing. I bring some good news. I managed to locate a tarp. Shall we get to finishing this thing up then?" said Susan's voice. Eliza turned as much as she could on the ground and smiled at her. Susan's skirt was a little wet, and so was the tarp, so she probably had to go into the water.

"Hey, that's great," said Eliza. "I'm about ready to drink the seawater. Let's finish this up!"

Eliza looked at the tarp in Susan's hands and she nodded in approval. It looked like it had a few holes in it, but it wasn't anything major. The tarp was big enough to cover the hole, or whatever Susan wanted to do with it.

Did Susan say what she wanted to do with it? Eliza should have paid more attention.

"It has a few holes in it, but nothing that could be a problem," she said. Eliza slowly moved her injured foot toward her, massaging it. Her ankle ached under her hands. Eliza whistled softly. "When we finish setting up the solar still, I might have to change these 'bandages'," Eliza made air quotes, "and let it breathe for a moment."

Eliza stretched her other leg, feeling pins and needles. Licking her lips and swallowing what little saliva she had left, she glanced toward Jack and Moira.

Moira was still trying to find something, but Jack seemed to make some headway because she heard a distant, small crack. Eliza was too far away to see what happened, but she guessed that a coconut had finally cracked.

Three feet in front of her, she saw some vines lying on the ground. Eliza looked back and forth between them and her foot until she made up her mind.

"My ankle is bothering me," she said. "It'll be a jiffy." That didn't make much sense, but Eliza unwrapped her makeshift bandages and sighed as the warm breeze hit her foot. She proceeded to grab the other vines and rewrap them.

"Alright then, let's get this over with," said Susan with a smile. "This should be the easiest part of building this thing, all we need to do is just cover the pit and weigh this thing down with a few strategically placed rocks, can't be too hard that, there's plenty of rocks all over the place."

Eliza whistled softly. "When we finish setting up the solar still, I might have to change these 'bandages' and let it breathe for a moment."

Susan nodded. She didn't know much about medical care but she did know that you had to change bandages on wounds like that.

Eliza then seemed to make her mind up about something. "My ankle is bothering me," she said. "It'll be a jiffy." She began to unwrap her makeshift bandages.

"Alright, I'll leave you to it then, lemme just go grab a couple of rocks while you're busy with that. And if you finish wrapping that before I come back, just spread that sheet out and try to cover the whole thing as well as you can. Then all we got to do is find some kind of container. Oh dear, I just keep on saying this is the last thing only to add something else to it, don't I?" Susan let out a nervous laugh and wandered back in the direction of the forest. This would be quick. All they needed was a few decent sized rocks, the biggest problem was going to be whether she could actually carry them all back in one trip.

It didn't take long for her to find a decent amount of rocks that should securely cover up the hole. All she had to do was figure out how to get all of them back. Thinking on her feet, she looked around for a fallen coconut leaf. Quickly locating that, she piled the rocks onto it one by one and then grabbing it from one end she pulled on her makeshift sleigh. The stones came with it. It actually worked. Something she had improvised on actually worked. She couldn't stop herself from punching the air and doing a slight jig.

Hoping no one had seen her silly celebration, she dragged the leaf all the way back to Eliza who'd already rewrapped her makeshift bandages.

"I brought the rocks," announced Susan.

As Eliza unwrapped the vines, Susan walked away to find some rocks. Eliza threw the old leaves and vines away. She couldn't help but wonder what her father might say if he were there with her.

Probably something along the lines of, I taught her that, you know. He wasn't a very humble man. But, thanks to him, she knew basic survival methods. She could even improvise bandages.

When her father was still in the military and he came home on leave, he would bring her and her brother to the woods behind their house. He taught them how to react to certain situations and what to do. Eliza owed everything she knew to him.

She could help her companions...

But she couldn't help Martha or John.
