"You heard Maggie," Kazimir grumbled, turning again to look through the glass. "Kids, get away from the door."

Some of them will definately be going for the kids, Maggie thought, then wondered absently if they had retained any of their living personalities. mother always said they weren't quite dead...

"Miguel keeps the sledgehammers in that closet there," Maggie said, gesturing to a steel door with a digital keypad, "The passcode is 'Ezra May', capital 'E', capital 'M', space between the names. There should be ten in there." They wished they'd kept a more accurate count of how many of them were in storage. Were the ones they'd used also coming to life? If that was the case, smashing them up wouldn't be much help.

As important as that was to consider, they didn't have time.

Turning to the primary work station, Maggie set about gathering tools. A hammer in each hand would be fine. Everyone else 'ought to use the sledgehammers, though, as they were either thin as stick figures or injured.

Armed now, Maggie cast one more thought in a direction that made them ill to ponder. Does it really matter now? May as well get the shock over with before it gets revealed mid-fight.

With a wavering sigh, they reached up and pulled the wig off their head. The mass of snakes, all varying shades of green and pale yellow, untangled from the neatly woven mass they'd assembled under the wig. Maggie turned back to the table and set the wig down neatly. If this is an illusion, what will happen to it if the illusion changes before I pick it back up?

They fiddled with the tools, looking for something else that may be useful.

Elias wasn't sure if killing created alive rock people was the answer to all this, but he didn't really know anything about the situation, so he bit his tongue to not complain about it. He gladly stepped out of the way upon Kaz's request, standing next to Annabeth, but not making a move to grab any sledgehammers.

Instead, Elias was more enthralled by Maggie's hair. Or... what was supposed to be hair when Maggie took off the wig. His eyes went wide, and instinctively, he pointed at their head full of snakes.

"Whoa!" he said more out of shock from the coolness factor rather than fear. "You've got snakes as hair!"

Hades also didn't make a move to grab any of the sledgehammers. He could use his magic to make his own if he needed to. Gods were physically stronger than mortals, even if they didn't look like it most of the time. He would leave the sledgehammers for everyone else and keep watching the entrance. If the need arose, he could use a hammer made of darkness instead.

Then Maggie took her wig off.

Hades's breath caught in his throat.

He had always wondered if they were like Medusa. This was just the confirmation of that theory. But it was one thing to consider that someone shared similarities to a story; it was another to see that story brought to life.

Was this what mortals felt the first time they saw a god?

Kazimir was busy going to the closet and putting in the passcode because apparently, he was the only one actually interested in getting the sledgehammers, which he knew would be far more effective against rock zombies than a gun.

He hurried over to the closet door, punched in the code, and found said sledgehammers leaning on the wall of the closet. Perhaps a bit overzealous, he grabbed two, and spun around, ready to rush to the glass door.

"Okay, clear the way--" he started to say, until his eyes landed on Maggie, who had removed their... well, apparently it was a wig. And their real hair was snakes.

Was this... all part of the dream? Or was this their normal hair... or head?

Kazimir stared at Maggie for a moment with narrowed eyes and a look frozen in what could be best described as bewilderment and confusion.

Snake head. Snakes on the head. Wasn't that like... some kind of... story... about something...

Aw, he**, Kazimir couldn't remember.

The snakes-head thing might've been weirder if he hadn't seen all the other sh** in the previous dream things. He shook his head, muttering to himself as he hurried to the glass door.

"Alright," he said, standing firmly in front of the glass doors, bracing himself. "Bring it on."

The snakes twisted and writhed, stretching after a longer-than-usual time under the wig. Meanwhile, Maggie tucked the wig away in a drawer to keep it from getting covered in dust and grabbed a handful of ventilation masks. They put one on, their hair parting to make way for the strap, then returning to an ever-moving mass of activity.

They offered the masks to the others, rolling their eyes at Elias's comment as they handed one over. Illusion or not, they should protect their lungs.

Kazimir quickly took the mask without question, not really giving it much thought as he put it on.

"Okay," he said, his voice now a little muffled. "So we smash 'em, but also, they're not real, and who knows how this thing's going to end, but I'd prefer the kids don't get hurt. Yeah?"

As he said that though, it occurred to him that whatever wounds he might accrue during the fight to come would probably just be temporary, right?

He might as well go all out.

"There's a smaller panic room in the back of the storage closet, just move the screwdriver rack aside," Maggie explained. They hadn't thought about the kids, but hiding Elias away at least may be a good idea.

They tested the weight of the hammers in their hands. It would be best to just open the door, bottleneck them so the non-calcified individuals wouldn't be overwhelmed.

It was so nice to have their senses open for once, like taking off an eyepatch. Suddenly they could see all around them again, no unnecessary limits. Their sense of smell was crisper as well, which they were not quite as thrilled about. Kazimir needed a shower.

The mask only needed to be tightened a little.

Annabeth sucked in a deep breath and readied herself. She grabbed a sledgehammer from the wall and stood to the right behind Kaz. If any of those rock zombies got past him, she'd help knock them down.

If she went into the panic room, Greta would never let her hear the end of it.

After a minute of fumbling, Hades slipped the mask on. He hadn't seen anything like it before, but he could guess the reason for it after glancing over at the sledgehammers. The mask wasn't a necessity. Council knew he had gotten enough injuries sparring with his niece. He could heal a torn lung or two without much concentration.

But he didn't want to take attention away from everything else, so he decided it was best to use the mask.

"Do you need help moving the rack?" Hades asked Elias, not entirely sure what a screwdriver was. While he waited for an answer, he summoned darkness around his feet in preparation of the future attack.

Maggie stepped toward the door, watching the statues. Their accomplishment was tainted, corrupted. Mother never had this problem.

They kept a few eyes on the others while they got ready to open the door. The others didn't look quite ready yet.

The others didn't seem to have that much of a reaction that there were slithering crawling snakes on Maggies head, so Elias shook the thought away and followed the other's actions by putting on the mask and grabbing a sledgehammer.

The weapon felt heavy in his hands, and he felt odd carrying it since he didn't really know what to do with it... just, like, whack the rocky people with it? Will they bleed rocks? Will it hurt them? There were so many things Elias didn't know, but he was rolling with the punches and following along.

He stood at the back of the group, looking over his shoulder where Hades nudged towards the rack where this "panic room" was. Well, Elias wasn't panicking, so he obviously didn't need to go in a room for panicking.

"Nah," he said, casually propping the sledgehammer on his shoulder as he curiously stared at Maggie's snake hair for a few lingering moments before turning back towards the rock people still trying to claw their way in.

Elias had no idea what was going to happen, but he accepted long ago that he hardly ever did.

Maggie glanced back at the others. Neither of the younger members of the group had chosen to hide away. It wasn't Maggie's responsibility, though, to ensure that they make it out of this safely. The option had been provided, and, while Miguel was brilliant, Maggie didn't quite trust their creation to hold up to the assault it was under forever. It was time to open the door.

They readied their hammer, their other hand hovering over the keypad. The statue nearest the door was slim, composed of limestone if Maggie had to guess. Should be easy enough.

Their gaze skimmed over the crowd, quickly assessing which among them would need to be hit harder. If they were shattered, that would kill them properly. Maggie had most definitely tested that theory.

One more deep breath later, Maggie punched in the code and threw the door open, immediately smashing the hammer against the statue's sternum. It shattered with a CRACK.

The small victory was short-lived, however, as it was followed by a flood of stone.

Okay. It was smashing time.

Kazimir held his ground, and with a wild swing of his sledgehammer, smashed the first stone person to come his way. The hammer hit their chin, and like a shudder running through their stone body, cracks splintered down to their legs, and they crumbled. That stone person was quickly replaced by two more, and Kazimir growled as he swung horizontally through the air, hitting one into the other.

The pile of stones at his feet was growing very fast, and the horde had only started bursting through.

A statue lunged toward her, its fingers (claws?) outstretched.

Annabeth instinctively ducked, gripping the hammer tightly. The statue tripped over her, and that's when she took her chance. She rolled to the side and jumped over, swinging the hammer over her head and cracked it on the stone's skull. The statue shattered instantly.

There wasn't any time to breathe, though, as another statue replaced its fallen (friend?) (associate?) Annabeth smashed its cheek, and it went down too, cracks spreading along its body.

But, for every statue she and her friends destroyed, more came through the door. A never-ending horde. Annabeth ducked again and swung the hammer into a statue's legs, shattering them completely. When the statue fell, she finished the job.

Annabeth wiped sweat off her forehead. Three down, just a hundred or more to go.

I have lived through much, and now I think I have found what is needed for happiness. A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people to whom it is easy to do good... then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbor - such is my idea of happiness.
