Kingdom Hearts: The Roleplay

A Saeverse Production

[ Based on Tetsuya Nomura's Kingdom Hearts ]

...I've been having these weird thoughts lately...
...Like, is any of this for real...
...Or not?

In a story where Sora, Kairi and Riku never existed, three children discover that other worlds exist when their own are conquered by darkness. Each has the power to vanquish the evil that has grasped the hearts that have fallen into darkness: the power of the keyblades. They have been chosen for something, but it is hard to say what that something is. All they know is that it is their destiny to save their worlds and others from the darkness.

But the darkness is not a free agent. There are forces beyond the three's control, and it is only by uncovering the connections in their past that they'll be able to overcome those that threaten to destroy everything they hold dear.

This is a story of a new trio. Of keyblades, and Heartless, and Nobodies. Of a childhood friend who flickered between worlds, collecting his own necklace of hearts before vanishing five years ago and appearing to watch over the darkness. Of shadowy organizations and powerful men.

And, most importantly of all, of unity.

Spoiler! :
Lira's character can be found here in the old storybook, but it's copy-and-pasted down below for convenience.

Name: Lira

Keyblade Design: Protector

The Protector is a keyblade that highlights how its user gains their strength from defending others. While the keyblade can be used by those without a need to protect, it will never be as strong. The sleek, black keyblade incorporates small, ornamental shields into its design, as well as constellations that change to match the constellations of the world that the user is currently on. Like most keyblades, it's a long weapon. Besides its stars and shields, the keyblade has a relatively simple design – symbolizing how its user draws from their own strength to help others, rather than relying on an external force.

Native World: Destiny Islands

Gender: Female, she/her.

Age: 15

Appearance: Lira is average height for her age, with a lack of noticeable muscles. She has long, light brown hair and light blue eyes. Her current outfit is a blue sundress that fades from a darker shade of blue at the top to a lighter shade of blue at the bottom and a pair of old sandals. The other noticeable thing she has is a silver charm on a rope bracelet around her right wrist – it's half of a heart that says “best friends” forever on it. She has the friends part; the other's owner has the best part.

Personality: Lira has a generally upbeat personality and a curious nature – she loves learning about Destiny Islands, and has always been thrilled at the thought of seeing other worlds. But she's also defined by her loneliness. It wasn't by choice, but Lira is solitary. She can handle being alone with her thoughts, though she ultimately prefers to be with other people.

Lira is also a kind person, but sometimes she struggles to make the right choice – picking one struggle to help with over another is never an easy task for her.

Brief History: For the entirety of her life, Lira has lived on Destiny Islands. She's spent her childhood chasing after waves and seashore creatures, creating epic adventures that are usually slightly edited reenactments of books she's borrowed from the library her mom runs. For the first six years of her life, this was considered the normal way that things were. She didn't need friends during those early years – everyone was a “friend” just because she knew them.

But just a few weeks shy of her seventh birthday, Lira met her first true friend. His name was Levi. His family, according to him, were travelers. She never saw much of them – just glimpses of colored, unfamiliar hair and tall, intimidating figures out of the corner of her eye. Levi wasn't always on the island; when Lira was a teen, her mom would admit that Levi had just been a figment of Lira's imagination. Levi gave her the charm she always wears during their friendship. They continued to play together in the wildest corners of the islands until she was ten years old. Then Levi disappeared, and Lira reluctantly returned to a life of books and solitary adventures.

Talents: Lira's a natural born mediator, and has a massive well of random, sometimes useless knowledge thanks to her frequent bingereading sessions. Her kindness and friendliness make it easy for her to get along with almost anyone. However, she is not docile. She has an incredibly fierce loyal streak, and can do amazing things when it's to protect the people she cares about...even if they're practically strangers.

Other: The charm that Levi gave her actually had a matching bracelet, but she long ago outgrew it. She made a bracelet with the charm on it instead; it rarely comes off. Though Lira has a generally cool head, she's shown to get impulsive and rash when ownership of the bracelet is threatened.

Lira

Traverse Town

Spoiler! :
phpBB [media]

When Lira opened her eyes, she was sprawled out in an alleyway.

Everything hurt. The last thing she remembered was seeing darkness everywhere - darkness enveloping her, enveloping Destiny Islands, and enveloping the boy who had looked unmistakably like her childhood best friend. Some part of her remembered holding a strange, large key, too, but she was sure it had just been a figment of her imagination.

But then she saw it in her hand.

And Lira, who was still trying to process being transported from one place to another without warning - when something like that should have been impossible - just sat there and stared right at the oversized key in her hand. Somewhere inside, she knew she should have been moving, or doing something, but she couldn't move past what she had seen on the island.

She had seen him.

She had seen Levi.

If she closed her eyes, she could imagine him in the distance again. It was all him, but it wasn't, and Lira just couldn't figure out why. Maybe it was the look of annoyance that had flickered across his face when those monsters had appeared. Maybe it was something about his eyes - eyes that were too far away for her to clearly make out, but still undeniably different. Or maybe it was his clothes - dark, mysterious, and nothing like the clothes he had always loved wearing when they were kids.

Or maybe it was because he looked like he did when she last saw him, even though that was five whole years ago.

She opened her eyes and stared into the other wall of the alleyway, not even paying the least bit of attention to the crate beside her.

Spoiler! :
https://www.youngwriterssociety.com/storybook_character.php?t=109868&c=5155&mode=view Short version, Baba is a rambunctious genderless living scarecrow child from the world of Halloween Town. Baba lives on a farm with a wolfman named Mr McGregor, chasing crows, meaning well, and causing havoc.
Image Baba has a gothic looking keyblade that looks like it's made from old, dull iron. The circle part is fringed with daisy petals. The end of the key is topped off by a big sewing needle poking through a ball of lavender coloured yarn.

It's called the Stitcher, and it has the power to repair anything that's damaged. It can be used to fix broken objects, or heal wounds. The only thing it doesn't work on is Baba.

Baba was trapped under the ice. That was it.

The shadow imp horde that Baba pulled under thrashed below the frozen ceiling, heedless of their prison, scrambling to reach the key again.

Baba drifted below them, lost in a world of watery blackness, but they did not feel the cold. They wanted to feel glad for the safety of Mr McGregor, and all their neighbours. But all Baba felt was betrayed.

Baba clung to the big iron key in their hands, and curled in a ball around it, as they sunk.

_____________________________

When Baba opened their eyes, they were in a wooden crate in a red cobblestone alleyway, still hugging the key. But Baba didn’t have eyes! Baba had buttons. What? And their wet clothes... felt wet. Cold felt cold.

Baba blinked down at their arms (blinked?) and saw that where there once was sackcloth, there now was skin. Real skin. And the familiar snaking stitches where they had ripped and mended themself with yarn- they were replaced with scars. Real scars.

Baba cried.

“Why is it leaking,” they wailed.

Hearing the sound of crying broke Lira out of her daze. Turning - and tightening her grip on the strange key that had fought off the monsters - she discovered that she wasn't alone in the strange, unfamiliar alleyway. There was another kid in the crate she was leaning up against. Their eyes were brimming with tears.

"Um," Lira awkwardly said. It took her a moment to find her voice. "Are you...Are you okay?"

Baba peeped out from the box, just looking over the edge.

"Um." said Baba, “Hi.” and disappeared into the box again.

The reply continued from inside, "Baba, um...Baba's town just got invaded.
By Baba's best friend's family. Baba didn't want to… to hurt them…" At this, Baba's face started to scrunch up a little more. They coughed throatily, and rubbed at their scarred cheeks.

"Baba doesn't know how Baba got in this box. Nobody knows, where Baba is. They can't look for Baba in the lake, or they'll let the shadows out. So they 'probly think Baba is gone for good, and… and now Baba's body is soft, and leaky, and it makes no sense."

They retreated back into the box.

She was struggling to wrap her head around what was being said, but she knew she had to try her best to understand it even when it made no sense. She had to help them feel better. She scooted a little closer to their crate.

"I'm sorry," she quietly said. She placed her strange key down on the ground beside her, hands resting on the very edge of the box. "That sounds horrible."

And then the recognition finally sunk in.

"You were attacked by shadows and ended up here?" she asked. She straightened a little, curiosity and relief flickering interchangeably across her face. She wasn't the only one who had gone through whatever had just happened.

She wasn't alone.

"I was attacked by shadows, too," she said. "They came to my island. I-I tried fighting them off, but I ended up here..."

Spoiler! :
Katherine Drakla: Stuck at sixteen, physically and mentally, Kate is 5 feet and eight inches of spite and sass. She was turned long ago by some traditional vampires with the intent to recruit her into their clan. She wasn't thrilled about that but, unable to do anything about it in her weakened state and with her newfound reliance on the blood they were able to provide, she played along for a while.

On a completely unrelated note, there was once a headline in the daily paper that read "Thirty Four Found Dead in Warehouse" which Kate was rather happy to read.

She wears blue wire-rimmed sunglasses and a matching fedora and sweater with black leather and silver jewelry and black jeans. Her dyed-red hair is cut in a bob with thick bangs, and her black roots have grown in considerably.

If she ever removed her sunglasses, her eyes are bright red beneath them and they glow slightly in the dark, and they glow more and more strongly the hungrier she is.

Keyblade: It's thinner and generally sharper looking than the other keyblades, with curves and spikes incorporated into its design. There's a silver chain that wraps around it, and two long silver spikes at the end serving as either side of the 'key' part of the blade.

Noteable facts: She's got a British accent due to being from an alternate version of London in a world secretly ruled by fae (lotta weird to go around there), and she has some very good senses. She does burn up in the sun and she can't actually see very well if it's too bright, so she's mostly nocturnal if she can help it. She doesn't have any special abilities other than the never aging or dying unless directly killed thing and the hyper-acute senses (which can be used against her if someone's clever enough to try).

Well, that was weird, was a prominent thought in Kate's head when she opened her eyes to find herself in a place that was not London. She had to look down at the giant key-ax thing to make sure it was real. That wasn't a dream.

Oooookay then.

She got to her feet, briefly wrinkling her nose a the thought of what might have been on the mildly damp stones she'd been so unceremoniously dumped on by the black-void-thing, whatever it was. She'd have to get back at that thing sometime, once she knew what it was, or whoever had summoned it. She wasn't exactly hungry, but she could eat if whoever dropped her here showed their face.

The street she was on was a little more exposed than she'd like, and the monster things, foul-tasting brainless things that they were, had woken her up, and she'd like to find a place to resume her catnap. Those things were probably creations of the glitter-munching sparklevores that ran the whole supernatural side of the world, also known as the world. It was just like them. Pointless, violent, counterproductive. They'd even added illusions, from the looks of it. She could have sworn she saw Levi amongst those things.

She turned into an alley and stopped. A heartbeat. Two heartbeats. Two people. Humans, from the sound of it, and the smell of it.

People who could be from here. People who could know how she was here, why she was here.

"Hi," she said.

Baba sprung up, and looked into the kind girl’s face. It was true. She was the same!

Then… then that meant she was lost, too. She needed somebody.

Baba finally stopped hugging the key. They wiped the snot off their face with the wrist of their gardening glove, and offered the girl a handshake. Just like Baba saw Mr MacGregor do.

“Baba is Baba.” they said. “Let’s-”

Before the girl could respond, another one appeared in the alley with them! An older one, with dark glasses, and pretty teeth. And a big, funny key.

“Oh! Oh, then you’re lost as well!” Baba cried out, happy to have more company.
Baba picked up their key (in the hand that was not offered to the sundress girl) and waved it to show the vampire.

Baba may have made a funny impression, a ragdoll-looking kid with a wet face, covered in scars, and sitting in a box. But everybody knew only good things came from wooden boxes in alleyways.
Like puppies. Or slimy fish heads. Any heads.

Kate frowned at the sight of the little patchwork creature. Whatever it was - probably a kid, but it was too soon to tell - it looked like something some inept filmmaker who never read the book might interpret Frankenstein's Monster as looking like if said-monster were actually a small talkative child.

She crossed her arms and arched an eyebrow, "I'm not lost, as a matter of fact, I'm just on a temporary little trip away from lovely London to see the sights." This little thing had no right to go prattling on about how 'lost' they all were before it - they? - knew the first thing about her.

Kate looked away from the scared-up child to the girl. Probably a girl. It was hard to tell nowadays. Sizing her up, Kate said, "I'm Kate. Just Kate, if you'd like to keep your throat. I assume, as the little creature said, that you're lost?"

Lira blinked.

Kate has fangs. Kate had also just threatened her, but something like fangs was a more pressing issue. Lira had never seen anyone with fangs before. Levi had said he had, but it was hard, looking back, trying to figure out what had just been Levi's imagination and what hadn't.

But among her confusion, she managed to get a comment out.

"Their name is Baba," she said. There was a pause, a moment of hesitation, and then, "I'm Lira."

She looked over at Baba's key. At her own key. And at Kate's key. They all looked a little different, but they had the same design - a large key that was meant to be held and wielded like a sword.

"I am lost," she admitted. "But I think we're in the same situation. Did shadow monsters attack you, too?"

(She was too distracted by this revelation to shake Baba's hand.)

"Oh, well, congrats on your lostness, but I believe we 'ought to part ways." That girl - she was a girl, Kate decided - wasn't the kind of person she would ever hang out with. Fangless, of one thing, so probably human, and so polite it hurt to listen to. Nothing like Kate's usual crowd. The little creature-thing-whatever was interesting though. It seemed to be fairly human. Heartbeat, the scent of blood, all of that, but no human Kate had ever seen could go through such patching and stitching and live to tell about it.

"After all, I'm sure you've all got some very important something or other to deal with right about now. I wouldn't want to get in the way. Bye-bye now." She turned to leave, then had a thought and turned back around, "Are there any blood banks nearby that you know about?" She might as well ask. If there were, it would be good to stock up on some blood. Animal blood worked fine, but it was like the junk food of the vampire world. Empty and certainly not capable of doing cool stuff like keeping people like Kate alive to sass another day for very long. Human blood was where it was at in that category.

Blood bank. Baba began to picture cavernous gothic vaults filled with sacks, bank tellers with bat ears and big fangs. Baba's train of thought got stuck somewhere in between picturing Kate in a classical burglar mask and striped shirt, and trying to imagine what the blood equivalent of gold bars would be.

"Well, we've got some," said Baba bewilderedly. "Weird," it whispered.

"But don't you want to find out what these keys are, or why those shadows came? Isn't there someone- you're worried about?"

Kate rolled her eyes, "Yeah, myself. Where might I find one of these blood banks?" she asked. All of this doddling was making her anxious. The fae probably wanted her to stay here. This whole thing was probably one of their little vampire extermination schemes. Because why let the dangerous bloodsuckers stay in the big city where they might hurt someone?! Kate rolled her eyes. Biting a human was archaic. Disgusting. An absolute last resort. Like killing and eating a wild animal raw. Gross, but doable if worst came to worst. Blood banks were much better. Just talk to a friendly nurse and they'll slip you a bag or two of the good stuff to prepare and drink later.

This little thing was cute though. A little rude and presumptuous, but cute.

"Oh. Baba doesn't know. Let's find one."

Unprompted, Baba ran off and accosted the nearest adult, by the postbox yonder.
A whimsical, Gepetto-ish carpentery looking fellow, for a whimsical, terracotta red brick gaslamp looking town.

Baba chatted animatedly at him, and his patient smile sank further down his face the longer he listened. Eventually he caved in and darted off down a side path.

Baba slunk back to Lira and Kate, defeated.

"He doesn't know, either." said Baba disappointedly. "We'll have to ask someone else."

"Um..." Lira awkwardly started, glancing between the two. She had initially been too shocked by the mention of "blood banks" to join in on the conversation. But now that Baba had asked someone else about the blood banks, Lira was finally putting two-and-two together.

Even though vampires were just supposed to be another one of Levi's stories.

Vampires weren't things that she could find in her own books. She had tried to find them, and other things from Levi's stories, too. But no matter where she looked, she had never been able to find a single hint of them even fictionally existing.

Lira snapped herself out of her thoughts.

"You can't just ask for blood banks," Lira said. Levi said you always had to cover your neck when you were near vampires, but that had just been Levi being Levi.

...Right?

Almost absentmindedly, Lira startled to fiddle with the charm that Levi had given her what felt like an eternity ago. She didn't normally think about him this much, but it was hard not to after she imagined him on the island-

The island.

What had happened to the islands? There had been monsters, like Baba described, but there had been more than monsters, too. There had been darkness ripping Destiny Islands apart. Beach, water - all of it was crumbling underneath the darkness. She had barely noticed at the time because of the onslaught of monsters.

But the island was destroyed.

Her hand dropped to her side, and her strange key went clattering to the ground.

"My-my home," she whispered, eyes welling up with tears as realization slammed into her. "It's...It's gone."

In the night sky above, a star died.
