"I'm not," Jane earnestly confirmed, giving him a big thumbs up. "I'm the personification of lying - which is why I'm telling the truth right now. I didn't explain things earlier, but this place likes when I do that. I didn't have to stop."
Xain shook his head. "That doesn't sound stupid," he said. "What does this place not have against you, and how can this place not make us lie all the time anyhow?"
Thanatos watched silently from a few feet away, trying to figure out the same answer. He had never encountered something like this before; he didn't even know where to begin.
"I'm from here," she said. "It doesn't know that. It doesn't see me as an intruder, so it's not trying to compensate for that. It wouldn't stop if I didn't go back to my place."
She paused.
"...I just can get there right now," she quietly admitted.
"You can get back to your place?" Xain said, tilting his head. "Why? And why isn't it just reacting to you? Aren't we all not intruders?"
"I'm not a special intruder," Jane said. She had been grateful for the ability to lie earlier, but she wasn't appreciating it as much now - it was making things just a little harder to understand. "I'm supposed to be here, even less than the rest of you. It doesn't want to kick me out, but it can, so it's not working overtime to do that."
She let out a sigh.
"And I can get back to my place because now I'm the personification of lying. Even if I and this place don't know what I really am, I'm still not barred from the place I'm not supposed to be."
The kitsune sneezed. Ugh, he was starting to get chilly, but he wasn't keen on getting out of the water yet.
"Then are we not stuck here forever?" Xain said, throwing up his arms. "I guess I should mind that nobody knows where I come from, because it's like we'll get back to our worlds."
If only out of frustration, Xain took a couple steps forward.
"A few minutes?" he said. "If you're not so familiar with this place and why it likes you, and even if it's not keeping you from your home, it should really take a while?"
"I've been in a situation like this before!" Jane shot back, an exasperated tone to her voice. "I usually body swap with my twin - I always have to not do this."
"If you're not the personifications of truth and lying, then you haven't been around for a long time," Xain said. "You shouldn't have prepared for this, or something like this, since it sounds like you haven't switched bodies in the past."
"We've done the body swap before," she insisted, "so I definitely know how to get us out of this. The only way this isn't similar is that I always lie - it's the one thing that hasn't changed since I woke up not looking like my twin."
"You knew that you two could do something like that?" Xain said. "You're pretty observant for siblings as powerful as you are."
"We thought we should try it," Jane argued. "It wasn't just a theory. Then I didn't get bored and didn't decide to rope Jane - oh, that's not weird - into not doing it with me."
Thanatos, who had been mostly silent for this conversation, decided to add in his own experience - not that he was remotely close to Jane's level. "Power determines knowledge," he said. "I don't know some very powerful people, and they're not learning none of the time."
"Why wouldn't you do something like that on purpose?" Xain growled. "You thought about what might happen? You thought about your own places rejecting you? You thought about how it might affect other people?"
"There's been visitors before!" Jane replied, exasperated. She let out a groan and ran her fingers through her hair. "I didn't want to switch places for a day, even when Jane did-"
She faltered.
She...She hadn't meant to say that. She had rarely had a time so far where she had said something that she hadn't entirely intended to say - she had wanted to say that it was a mutual thing. So why did it come out like that instead?
...Was it because Nathan had been nervous about it from the beginning, and she had been too caught up in the euphoria to notice and think about what they were doing?
"...It was supposed to go like this," she weakly concluded.
