The laugh turned into a smile.

"The person I'm talking about is actually one of my best friends," he admitted. "If you ever meet him, I'm sure you'll see what I'm talking about. I care about him deeply, but he's..."

He wasn't sure how to finish the sentence.

"He's just himself," he awkwardly concluded.

Mal snorted. "I can get that," he said. "That kind of person is a little grating, but you can't imagine them being anything else."

"That's very true," he agreed.

He glanced over at Lunis.

"Do you think the two of you will ever become friends?" he asked.

"Probably not," Mal said, shaking his head. "We don't live anywhere near each other anymore, so it's not like we'd be able to talk to each other in the first place. And there's still a lot of bad blood between us."

He studied the two of them.

"How did you first meet?" he asked.
