Maahes had opened his mouth to reply to what Rowan had said, but quickly fell silent after Xi's comment. He looked over at her. Why didn't she want to have the conversation here? If she was worried about someone overhearing it, they didn't have to worry about that. They were the only ones close enough to hear any parts of the conversation. And if she had something else on her mind, she hadn't mentioned it or even tried to steer the conversation in that direction-
Oh.
She was trying to avoid the topic, wasn't she?
Normally, he would have eagerly complied. With many secrets of his own, he rarely pressed people for information they didn't want to share. But he needed to find a way to fix his ship and return to space. The implications of him not doing so were tremendous.
"I really want to talk about it now," he quietly said, trying not to draw attention to how Xi wanted to avoid the subject altogether. It was awkward as it was; there was no need to make it even more so. He looked from Xi to Rowan. "They weren't really gods. Well, not in the way that you normally would think of them. They were - are - a parasitic alien race that took on the persona of gods."
He hoped neither one knew their Egyptian mythology all that well. If they knew the gods from that mythology, they would quickly realize that his name - Maahes - was among them.
Xi swore in her head. She needed to get out of this conversation, now. She grabbed her phone, pretending to check her texts and tsked loudly. “My mom texted me. She wants me to help make dinner. Well,” she said, bowing to Maahas like Chinese people do. “It was nice meeting you, Maahas.”
She quickly ran off, cursing herself for coming up with a sucky excuse. However, since her mom did that ALL the time, it shouldn’t be as bad of one as saying that she heard someone calling that obviously didn’t.

She watches her go with her brow furrowed, but doesn't pursue her. "Where'd you need to go for ship parts or whatever?" she asks Maahes.
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
He was distracted by Xi's sudden disappearance - if he hadn't already been certain that she was hiding something, he was now - but he managed some semblance of a reply. "A tech or hardware store," he said. He looked back over at her. "I'm not sure how much it will help, but I have to make do with what I can get."
She nods, hopping into the truck. "Alright, let's go."
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
He goes to join her, only to stop with his hand hovering over the door's handle. He could feel the iron inside of the car, a dull uncomfortable sort of ache that he wanted to avoid if possible. "If you don't mind," he said, gesturing up at the sky, "could I follow you from up there?"
"Not at all. I'll meet you there." She closes the door and drives up the road back towards the stores in town.
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
His guise effortlessly shifted from the human he appeared to be to a peregrine falcon. Though the flight was awkward at first, due to his recent lack of practice with the guise, he soon was easily flying after the truck.
It doesn't take them long to reach the store. It's small, as is expected, and Rowan pulls into a tiny parking lot right outside of it.
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
The peregrine falcon landed beside truck. In the blink of an eye, Maahes stood in its place in the guise he had been using back at the lake. He silently waited beside the door of the truck.
"You're quite the handsome tiercel," she tells him as she gets out of the car.
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
"Thanks," he said, flustered even though he didn't quite know what the word meant. It probably had something to do with his guise; even though he had frequently taken it during his time on Earth, he had never thought to do much research into it.
She just nods shortly and pushes open the door into the store.
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
Maahes followed her inside. Though they just entered, he immediately started to look for anything that would be of use to him. He admittedly wasn't sure what Earth things could help fix a Goa'uld ship, but it wasn't like he had a choice. This was the only place he could think of.
