She seemed nice, though Maahes admittedly knew little about her. It was worth learning more. It seemed like this town was host to all sorts of strange things; she most likely wasn't a normal human. "I apologize if this is considered a rude thing to ask, but what exactly are you?"
Even though that wasn't entirely true, Xi didn't trust the new man. The last time she trusted a stranger with that information got her locked up in an asylum in England. She didn't want to repeat that experience again.

"So, um, have you lived here your whole life?" He didn't want to pry, but it looked like he was the only one trying to carry the conversation right now. It was a good place to start. Even if her answer was vague, he could still prompt her to talk more about the town. He was curious about what life there was like.
"I see," he said, smiling again. "I've moved around, too, though I probably remember it better than you do." He glanced back at the lake. "Did you always know that this town wasn't normal?"

"Oh," he said, now able to place where he had heard it based on what she had said. Could she actually sense it, or was she just using it as a casual term? He knew that it was possible - especially in a town like this. "I can read auras, sometimes...Not of entire towns, but of individual people. It's hard to describe it."
