I was wondering if it would be possible to change my gender symbol to one that is not listed on the list of possible genders. I want an open circle, as I am are-ace. If there is a way to do this or if it is possible that YWS might get more specific genders, please reply to this thread! Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, adding any more gender symbols would be a Nate-level coding thing, so it's not likely to happen any time soon. But the one you have right now is supposed to be a catch-all for anything other than male/female, so it's probably closest to what you want.

Out of curiosity, what is are-ace? I tried googling it and just got stuff for asexuality, which I already know about.

It's Aromantic Asexual. You don't feel attracted to either sex romantically or sexually. Most people think it would be lonely, but it just allows for more meaningful friendships! ;)

Oh - I'm familiar with that as well, but I was under the impression that was a sexuality, not a gender and so was a little confused when you said was your gender. :P Thanks for the clarification!

Lots of Asexuals use an open circle to identify themselves. If you are not attracted to either gender, is that not your gender? I look male and use male pronouns, and I would probably put "Asexual, uses male pronouns" on get-to-know-you sheets.

Ah, ok. I've always been told that your sexuality is who you're attracted to (so gay, straight, bi, ace, etc.), and your gender is how male/female/in between/something completely different you feel on the inside (so man, woman, genderfluid, nonbinary, etc.). But really, the difference probably doesn't matter too much. People can just identify however they want. :)

Isn't this a sexuality, not a gender identity?

Yes, but as I said, if you don't date or feel for either or any sex, then that indicates a foreign gender identity as well. (foreign as in different from the norm)

First of all, let me say that I think you should use whatever pronoun or gender symbol feels right for you, but I don't feel that gender and sexuality are in any way linked. There are most definitely genderqueer asexual people, but I don't think either happens because of the other. There are also plenty of ace people who identify strongly as male or female. Again, you do whatever feels right to you, but I don't think being asexual and genderqueer are necessarily linked for other people.

They're not, really. But if you don't feel ANYTHING romantic/sexual/physical for people, it's kind of like you're neutral. That doesn't mean you are, though! Be whoever you want to be!
