4- Write a serious poem centered around the word 'butter'-- 10 pts. -rolls up sleeves-

The Spreading Of Butter
The assailant took his knife
And started spreading butter
Spreading butter all over the bread
A rare, limited kind of butter
The kind to silence 70,000,000 people
For good

The vitamins in the butter
Were used to spread it faster
Rats, flies, death, carcasses
This made the butter has a lasting effect
Even felt to this day

Sure, the bread will recover
From the pitch black mould
But it won't make it edible again

5- Write a funny poem about crying-- 6 pts. Ok then.

Why Are You Crying 'Bout THAT???
People are starving
Many can't access water
People can't afford houses anymore
I'll be unable to retire in the future
It makes me cry

And you're crying
About a boyband breaking up?
Give me a break!

6- Write a political poem-- 4 pts. Ah, my specialty!

Campaign
Campaign, campaign, kiss babies
Gonna make you vote for me
I'll start random wars to make more money
If we ain't taking enough already

Campaign, campaign, can't you tell?
I'll dive you all head first into hell
I'll drag you, yes, I'll drag you with me

No point in hoping that
The opposition will win
Once I come in power
You can kiss your world goodbye

Not that I'm the first one to do this
Everyone before me has

On the TV, it's my big break
They won't notice I'll lie, even when I blink
I'll be confident and I'll go off on a tangent

Campaign, just another way
To make young people feel special
"I'm gonna vote when I'm older!"
Only to discover there's no retirement age anymore

But many have done this before me
I'm just givin' it a modern spin!

Campaign, campaign, a waste of your time
Gives the news channel some ratings
Sneak in a xenophobic comment or two

Who cares about the people?
Most of them don't understand
Ain't at my level
Swallow my campaign with your food, you peasants
The Nation of Ulysses Must Prevail!

If you don't like Mikko, you better friggin' die.

The power of Robert Smith compels you!

2- Write a poem that is no more than one stanza long-- 10 pts.

You laughed.
Like the hypocrite,
who mocks his flaws in silence.
Penetrating a needle in an eyeball
that turned out to be yours.

18- Write a scary poem finishing with the line "And then I laughed."-- 16 pts.

I knew a girl who collected masks.
She had loud ones and quiet ones,
happy ones and sad ones,
smart ones and stupid ones.

She had masks for being rebellious,
and she had masks for being cool.
She had masks for being proper,
and she had masks for dancing in the storms.

She kept them in a box beneath her bed,
and they whispered to her as she slept.
She wore different masks
depending on where she was going.

Eventually she had so many masks
for so many things
that she didn’t have time to take one off
before she put another one on.

She started layering them;
wearing so many she couldn’t even remember
which ones she was wearing.
They all whispered to her at once, all the time.
She couldn’t hear herself.

She tried to take them off,
but every time she shed one she saw another.
Her masks all had voices of their own,
and they wanted to be heard.

Then one day they came to take her away.
Men in white coats with rainbows on the pockets.
She grabbed my sleeve and begged me to find the masks
and keep them safe.

I did.

Now I keep them under my bed.
I was too curious.
I tried wearing them,
and now I can’t stop.

There are so many different people I can be.
They whisper to me in my sleep.
I suppose it’s only a matter of time
before they come to take me away too.

Last night, in my sleep, I heard the masks laughing.
I listened
and listened
and listened.
And then I laughed.
"So what? All writers are lunatics!"

10- Write a poem about a family member-- 6 pts

When I was four, and three feet tall,
we drove to school to pick up my sister.
Mom smiled and said, before we left,
"I want to hear the seat belts".
I didn't know why that was right,
but I felt warmth under her wings,
And I was glad she was with me.

I was thirteen, wanted to weep;
it doesn't feel right when you don't fit in.
She held me tight, said, "That's alright.
We're all different, like in appearance.
Let's try that song in another key,
And you will see that you can sing."
I never said, "I'm glad you're here."

Through the good and the bad,
she has always held my hand;
to lead or support, to show me all the roads.
Looking after me has been her main job.
...I've never said, "Thank you, mom." 8|

Challenge 10: Write a poem about a family member. 6 points.

This is a poem called More Alive. I wrote it when my great-grandmother died on January 15, 2013. It's from her pov and it is what I imagine she would say to me,

Why do eyes that sparkled with joy now gleam with tears?
Rimmed in red and shadowed with sorrow.
Lips that once curved into a smile are drawn into a frown.
Cheeks that were flushed with life are now pale,
An ocean of tears leaving behind streams on your beautiful face

Why do you pity me?
Don’t you know I’m in a better place
Don’t hang your head like that
Hold your chin up high
Don’t you dare think I abandoned you; I had to move on

My story does not end the way you believe it does
This is the new book in the series of my life
I didn’t fade into oblivion
In fact I am more alive than ever
Why? You ask
Because, now I am free.

I have no more regrets, tears, anger
Only joy, but also pity for you
Is this how you will remember me?
As a hollow shell lying beneath the hard, cold earth?
If this is all I am to you, then you dishonor me.

Stop shoving memories to the darkest corners of your mind to be forgotten
Cling to them and let the fill the coldness in your heart
I am sorry it hurts to remember
But it hurts more to delude yourself that blissful ignorance is your alternative
I promise, in time, the light will dissolve the shadows trying to consume you

So stop dragging your heart in the dirt
And don’t droop like a wilted flower
This is not who you are
Straighten your spine, square your shoulders, and press on
The path may be worn, but you will finish the journey

4. Butter ~ (this is so terrible, it's almost embarrassing)

I know a lady that ate
butter on a regular basis -
just plain.

I guess you could say
she, too, was spread thin
like margarine.

Four kids, an animal
clinic, and divorce -
the makings for sparsely
garnished toast.

When I was nine, I
went through this phase of
regret - I couldn’t sleep
without asking for
forgiveness for any and
every sin I had ever
committed.

It was almost embarassing,
really.

One of those times
the oven of my guilt
had burnt my confidence
to a crisp:

Long ago, I was maybe 6,
and I called the butter
lady’s daughter a
baby. She cried,
hurt that her best friend
would ridicule her.

Guilt is slippery,
like tiptoeing on
the surface of
butter.

7- Write a poem about something deeply personal-- 6 pts. Done deal

Girl
"She's not like them
Not at all
She's her own girl
Her own gift"

That was what
I convinced myself
All until
The final sound

She was not "nice"
Was not "kind"
I fooled myself
Once again

However,
I'll try this time
With someone
I'll try again

8- Write a poem with the word 'anxious' as the first word-- 8 pts. Piece of cake :D

The Axe Murderer's Ill Karma
Anxious, she pulls back
As the axe murderer cuts her property
Down to an alarming degree

But, he tripped over and broke his neck
She was anxious no more

9- Write a poem based on a name *for extra points, use the name in some way*-- 8 pts. *10 pts.* Ooooh extra points!

Elodie
Elodie knows me
A little too well, if you ask me
My taste in clothes and music
And even in films
And, of course, the personal things
"Mosique", "Mimi", blah blah blah
What would I do without Elodie knowing me?

Since you said previously submitted ones count, I'd say these count for a couple.

Write about something deeply personal/more than eight stanzas: http://www.youngwriterssociety.com/work.php?id=99574

Write about a family member-http://www.youngwriterssociety.com/work.php?id=99702 (about my dad)

Now, a haiku:

I've never lived before
In a place with winter rain.
I almost miss snow.

Serious poem using the word "butter":

I hope I never live
a margarine life
filled with deception
and false promises.

Life's too short for
hydrogenated oils
and pale substitutes.

Live like real butter;
it might kill you
but you'll enjoy the ride.

A love poem about bagels--this is genuine since I've started a diet that discourages stuff like bagels haha

They say that you're poison--
too processed,too rich in calories,
not worth it.

But cream cheese tastes so wrong
on toast; it longs for your fleshy
donut-shaped goodness.

If you poison me, sweet bagels,
may Heaven have a table
filled with you.

12- Write a poem about the environment-- 12 pts.

You read these words now
but I know
that days to years later
you will forget them.

And if I tell you our world is in trouble
and that we need to change
our wasteful ways
these words shall only fade in time.

Just as sure as the oceans will dry
trees will fall
crops will fail
and people will starve.

And also as sure as the air will be thin
and poison us
and people will die.
You know this.
But you will (most likely) let it be
In exchange for old habits.

I warn you know though
that years from now
when it's bad enough for you to notice
you will remember these words.

Sparks, I edited my post above with a couple more. And I have more...

A poem based on your favorite book (American Gods by Neil Gaiman)

The world is ending so they say,
for the old gods tire of being replaced.
Ghosts come back to atone for their sins,
as a con man draws a shadow in
to a world of creatures long forgotten.
Road signs mark where men used to pray,
now at Rock City gods fight to stay
in a strange land with stranger dreams
where nothing is quite as it seems.
