Strong First Sentence

Rule: Write a strong first sentence for a novel idea.
Catch: It has to be 20 words or less.
(I borrowed the idea from Writer's Digest 8)

Here's mine:

Pranks were meant to be funny, but nothing was amusing about the hole in my empty pocket sans car keys.

It was a going to be a fateful day, and I knew it the moment I saw the darkly clad man peering at me from across the street in downtown Wildavon as I got on the subway, noticing his pale purple eyes penetrating through my core.

I held my eyes open, lying there on the ragged, hard concrete knowing that if I fell asleep I wouldn't wake up and would be forgotten, by everyone and myself.
