the final ride

Brought to you by @MomoMajesty and @Overwatchful

Image

You are dead.

Your expectation might have been Heaven, or Hell, or Valhalla, or some other place. You did not expect to wake up on a steam-powered train from the 19th century riding on for eternity on a barren wasteland.

Normally, the train's purpose would be to deliver souls to their afterlife. But for the last 200 years, the train hasn't made a single stop. You and the other deceased you have met take it upon yourselves to solve the mystery. Your reward? An afterlife.

~~~
Hello! Welcome to the Final Ride! We have been brainstorming about this for quite a while, and it is finally ready for you! Please confirm in the OOC that you would like to join, and fill out this character sheet and put it in with your post!
The Conductor
The Conductor whistled cheerfully as he strolled down the middle aisle of the train, nodding to the passengers he passed. Some of them nodded back, but most of them were too lost in their own minds to notice him. He didn't pay any mind to it; that was normal. At least for the older passengers.
There were new passengers today, and they should've been waking up at any moment. The Conductor would make his speech, welcoming them to the Last Express, and assisting them through the... emotional trauma that came with being dead. Then he would help make them comfortable for the remainder of their ride, until they were dropped off at their station.
Speaking of which, when was the next station? It had been a few... days? weeks? since the train had stopped. He furrowed his brow. That was odd. Usually the train stopped somewhere at least once a day...
He stopped, trying to ponder that, but he couldn't quite get a grasp on the thought. Well, no matter. The Conductor was sure that the engineers up front had it under control.
He entered the final car of the train, and gently knocked on the door to the cabin of the new arrivals.
Amelia
Amelia was dying.
She had been tired, so tired, so sleepy. It had taken everything she had to open her eyes and look at the grief-stricken faces of her parents. She could still hear them, still feel them holding her hands, kissing her face. They were telling her about how church had gone that morning, what the sermon was about, how the food at coffee hour was. Normal things.
Amelia could tell that they were thinking about other things though. When they stepped into the hall, she could faintly hear them talking about the funeral, and what Amelia should wear. If she had had any say in it, she would have wanted to wear her favorite blue T-shirt that said, “I’m a squirrel at hear- WAIT WAS THAT AN ACORN,” her black jeans, and her black boots. But, it wasn’t like she had any say in the matter.
But all that was gone now. All she had was this intense pain, these tears, and her mother’s sobs. It kept going for what felt like hours, but was only a few minutes, and then there was nothing.
Nothing.
Nothing.
Nothing.
Nothing.
No-
~ ~ ~
“AAAHHHHHHH!!” Amelia woke up and whacked her head on something. “OW!”
She laid back down, cradling her head, that...didn’t hurt?
Amelia looked around. She was on the bottom bunk of a bunk bed. On a train. An old train. She had been on one for a school field trip once. But wasn’t she dead? Why was she on a train?
She looked at the other bunks and started screaming as more people started to fade into existence.
Isma
Fun fact: rocks are heavy. Isma knew this especially well, considering she had been completly immobilized by a caved in pile of them. Well, it was nice to know she was ending doing something she loved.
The rest of her spelunking team were somewhere nearby, probably. If not physically, then spiritually, since she surely couldn't be the only one dying right now. Her walkie-talkie spewed unintelligable static from somewhere in the rubble. That meant someone was trying to reach her! Who? It didn't really matter. Her one of her arms was most definitely broken, and the other was pinned down by limestone debris. It just was nice to know her end was important to someone she loved.
This definitely wasn't the most peaceful way to leave, considering the excruciating pain throughout Isma's entire body. She remained at least partially concious while her lungs were slowly crushed beneath all the weight. Isma just hoped her team didn't feel the need to unbury her after all this just to bury her again. Ah, well.
The pain eventually faded, as did the drone of the walkie-talkie.
As did her thoughts.
As did Isma.
- - -
As soon as all the noise was gone, it was replaced by someone screaming. This definitely wasn't the most peaceful way to arrive.
Wait, where was she?
Oh, afterlife!
She propped herself up and examined her surroundings. Isma was on the top bunk of a bed in a pretty old looking room. No, not quite a room, more like a... train car? She couldn't help but smile as other people arrived, ignoring whoever was freaking out below her for a moment to appreciate the situation. This was really weird, but Isma Carson never backs down from an adventure.
SICARIUS
Shawn peered through the scope of his sniper rifle. The shot lined up perfectly, as always. He was good at this. No, he was great at this. Being an assassin that is. The businessman at the end of sights was sitting down for tea, unaware that he would die any moment now.
But he had been that way for about five minutes, sipping his tea calmly chatting with someone that Shawn couldn’t see through his limited window. His finger was on the trigger, but his mind wasn’t. This happened in the past few assignments. Hesitation. Human emotion. An assassin shouldn’t have those things.
Gritting his teeth, Shawn tried to focus, but something kept nagging him. He had seen a little girl enter the manor soon before the businessman sat down for tea. Was she sitting on the other side of that table? Was her life about to be destroyed in front of her as she watched this man die?
“Sicarius, take the goddamn shot,” a voice said in his earpiece. Sicarius was Shawn’s ‘codename’.
Finally making a decision, Shawn stood, and ripped out his earpiece. He threw it on the ground and crushed it under his boot. Turning to climb down from the building he was on, Shawn was surprised to find a man with a gun. He had it aimed straight for Shawn’s face.
“Tsk tsk tsk, I always knew you were gonna falter one day. That you were gonna break,” Butcher said. Butcher was the assassin of assassins.
You called him when your personal hired killer got out of line.
And here they were.
“Butcher, wai-” Shawn began, eyes widening.
Butcher wasn't one for waiting. Shawn’s body was removed quietly, and no one knew anything until the business man was shot dead later that day.
****
As soon as Shawn had seen Butcher, he knew it was over.
Now the blackness around him was the only companion.
But it was slowly replaced with a wholly unexpected scene.
An...1800’s train? Shawn lay on a bed within what seemed to be a train car.
Was this the afterlife?
If it was, why was there so much screaming?
Maybe the person knocking on the door would explain everything...
