The Merciless Isle is a small island lost in the middle of The Onyx Ocean within the realm of Aebrecia. The island has many landmarks and features of various kinds, the most prominent being a very tall and steep hill with a large old abandoned building atop. This creepy looking place was an asylum many many years ago for the most deranged of patients that needed specialist care. However it was closed down after the staff themselves also went quite insane.

You find yourself stood outside the front doors of this building on a dark and stormy night having fallen through what you can only assume to be an interdimensional rift in time and space as this is certainly not the place you were at before you arrived here. However foreboding this place looks it is the only shelter from the raging storm which seems to be gaining fury by the minute, it seems you have little choice but to venture inside the asylum. Only then does it become apparent you are not alone in this place and your very life and limbs are at stake.

Natalie carefully opened the door and stepped in, wary. She'd been sent here on a mission, that was all she had been told.

"An old asylum. Lovely." She muttered to herself.
"Those moments when your in so deep, it feels easier to just swim down"

"I'm erasing myself from the narrative. Let future historians wonder how Eliza reacted when you broke her heart

Meanwhile, within the walls, there is already someone moving about. Footsteps echo in the dark space as shadows dance across the walls in rhythm with Leila's shaking flashlight. She hears a creak and the flashlight if off in a second as she ducks through the nearest open door.

Natalie paused, thinking she heard something. She turned on a flashlight put a hand down, ready to reach her gun. "Who's there?"

Leila squeezed her eyes shut and tried to slow her breathing. One hand tugged on a short strand of faded orange hair while the other clutched the flashlight to her chest. The slightest echo of a voice reached her ears. Some part of her, a small part, thought that maybe, just maybe, whoever it was was friendly. They had called out after all. She shoved that thought down. Always assume the worst.

She tiptoed into the room, to the barred off window and considered her options in a frantic buzz. Under the bed? No, that would be first place someone would look. Out the window? She might be able to knock out the rusted old bars, but there was no way she could do it fast enough once the mystery person heard the noise.

Footsteps, quiet and near undetectable, could be heard in the heavy silence. She was out of time, she ducked into the bathroom and looked up. A large air vent was positioned just above the sink. She marveled at her own stupidity as she pulled out her pocket knife and took out the screwdriver.

Natalie walked on. If this person thought she was unfriendly, that was her problem. She continued walked, flashlight bouncing. She opened the door into the room, and didn't bother with the bed. She would have heard if those bars had been knocked out. She instead went to the bathroom.

Leila heard someone moving around in the room she had just left as she squeezed through the cramped ducts. She had left the grate on the floor, and she wasn't exactly silent as her compact frame brushed and occasionally banged against the hollow walls. A turn in the ducts. Two choices. She picked one and did her best to army-crawl in that direction.

Natalie opened the door, and immediately looked up. Smiling, she nodded in approval. "In case you can hear me, I won't hurt you when you decide to come out." She said, and then left to continue her exploration.

Leila heard the words as they bounced off the many hollow walls of the air vents. She wasn't dumb enough to believe them. She herself lied often, "Yes, officer, I'm eighteen,", "My boyfriend is waiting for me in the parking lot,", "I'm just in town to visit family", so she would never put it past anyone to stretch the truth. And even if whoever it was thought they weren't going to hurt her, no one liked a runaway, and, wherever she was, whatever that glowing thing had done, she didn't think that that rule would change.

She crawled forward and came across a vent. Looking down, she saw the top of a head of braided black and white hair belonging to a girl about her age as she walked through the building with a flashlight in hand. A moment later, she had walked out of view.

Natalie figured that the person wouldn't believe her, otherwise she wouldn't have hid in the first place. She pushed open another door and saw she was in a child's bedroom.

Leila waited a minute, then found the edge of the grate. There was one screw in each corner, each one rusted in place and much harder to remove from this side, but, through several minutes of twisting until her fingers were raw and her already chewed fingernails were torn down to the skin.

Finally, the last one came free. The grate stayed in place. Leila laced her fingers through the openings and gave it a shove. The good news, it gave. The bad news, it was much heavier than she had anticipated. Rather than pulling the grate up into the vent with her, it fell down to the ground with a painfully loud CRASH!

As quickly as she could, Leila crawled over the hole and abandoned her plan. just a few feet before her in the vents there was a drop-off. She crawled to it and looked down. She shoved down the sudden wave of nausea that hit her as soon as she saw the drop and focused on the layout of off-shooting tunnels that could serve as an unreliable ladder.

In yet another act of reckless stupidity, she lowered herself down and positioned her feet on the first slipper
