"If science is right, then I am crazy, and crazy is dangerous."
Some years into the future, science has made many advances, one of the highest debated was the absolute confirmation that nothing supernatural exists. Religion, while not banned, is something kept secret, and public worship is no longer approved of. All hospitals but a few are 100% government regulated, and if anyone shows any sort of mental irregularity along the lines of psychosis, they are medicated and locked away from society. Crazy is not allowed to exist.
Pregnant woman go through mandatory fetal screening, and if any abnormalites are detected, abortion is preformed. The only way one with a failed screening can get out of the mandatory abortion is with a lot of hush money. They claim the screenings are just for genetic abormalites, which would decrease ones quality of life, but there is a much darker secret behind it.
You are a member of those called "The Gifting". Dark forces exist behind the wall separating the worlds, and you're one of the few who can see through it. You cannot interact with these forces, spirits? There's no one you can tell who will know what you know. They take two forms, black greasy humanlike forms, easily distinguishable by their pure white eyes. All those thoughts against yourself, all the depression and anxiety you face, it's them. They lead you to harm, and gain energy and strength off the death and harm done to those they lead astray. The other form being small sprite like balls of white light.
Now, you can't interact with them, physically. Your power comes through in your dreams. People with the Gifting have constant lucid dreams, in which you can fight these spirits. You can be trained to be stronger in these dreams, and you can, and must learn to fight them.
How you end up in these places is a personal story. Maybe you got lucky with a private therapist who lead you here, maybe someone else found you and brought you here. All you know now is you are not crazy. There are people like you, and you are to be part of the war against things most people can't even see.
There are 2 main categories that the Gifting can manifest into, fighters and guardians.
Fighters are just what they sound like, they fight the other side.
Guardians on the other hand have different sub classes.
The most common are the shields, their job is to protect their fighters.
Then there's the cloaks. They put up a shield which hides the gifting from the other side.
Then there is the linkers. Fighters have a limited range, and linkers can connect different fighters and shield together.
Finally there is the rarest class of guardians. Keepers. Keepers are made with the soul purpose of protecting their anima. Anima directly translates to "breath of life". They are made for the sole purpose of protecting a very powerful fighter. Unlike everyone else, their powers come completely naturally when it comes to protecting their fighter.
All genocides in history have one common theme. In each genocided culture, there was a specifically high level of gifting. The other side can possess humans, without their knowledge. Their eyes are only white in the dream world, and so can easily disguise themselves in reality. A person being possessed is in a constant dream-like state, unaware of what is happening outside their mind. The gifting can see a black tattoo on the inner corner of the wrists of those possessed.
Cloaks are the only natural way of hiding the gifting, but there is also a medicinal way. The gifting has a high prevalence in the "mentally ill" and for those not considered dangerous, they are medicated and are allowed to continue living in society, their gifting blocked by the medication. If they are considered dangerous though, then they will be placed in a "mental rehabilitation center." They claim to rehabilitate, when in reality, all the patients are under 24/7 medication, unable to even be aware of themselves, until they're forgotten about, killed off, hidden in mass graves illegal for the public to access. Medicine can be helpful for temporary hiding, but while medicated, you cannot dream, and as the medication wears off, you are significantly weakened in the dream world.
