There are many of them. Many places, many members, all functioning perfectly for hundreds of years. That is, until the accident.

1653 brought the first one—the first portal to the Opposite—and the first group of Travelers came soon afterwards. The Society of the Opposite Travelers, they called themselves, a group of scientists and experts who dedicated themselves to exploring the new found world. There was much to see in the alternate reality, and with more and more portals opening up, more places to see it from.

Still, the entryways keep coming, and with each comes a new division of Travelers. 312. That’s how many there were before the most recent showed up. Number 313 made its home in a remote area of the Sierra Nevada, and its partner in the Opposite opened to an unexplored, previously unknown forest range.

The Travelers wasted no time putting together a new group, filling the team with veteran members, professors, new trainees, wilderness experts, and anyone who would be helpful. They became OTG-313, and their first mission left on January 12, 2015.

They were midway through the forest when it happened. The odd, magenta colored leaves on the trees began to shake, and the water in the rivers started to bubble. It felt like an earthquake, it shook the ground like an earthquake, but when all was clear and the Travelers attempted to contact the base in the Original, the signal was dead. Every portal was closed, every connection home was gone, and the Travelers had no way to get back.

The SB will start directly after the "earthquake" and will primarily focus on the Travelers trapped in the Opposite, but feel free to add other characters as well! (People back in the Original, other Travelers in the Opposite, people who are from the Opposite, etc.)

A bunch more information about the world, the mission, and the structure of the Travelers' organization can be found in this pad: http://queerelves.writerfeedpad.com/11

I want to keep it here so we can easily add and edit as we come up with more. Reading through it will definitely give you a better idea of what you're writing and will help you make your character(s). It'll also make the fairly vague introduction make more sense.

A few things keep in mind when making characters:
*Most Travelers would realistically be 25+. They do accept those as young as 18, but it would be unusual for someone so young to be qualified enough for this mission. If the character was brought into the Travelers by a relative, younger ages would be more realistic (but still uncommon); if they were recruited because they were a specialist in their field, under 30 would be virtually unheard of
*Travelers will each have something they're very well versed in that's related to the mission. Some may have had formal training in a university or in the military, while others may have been trained by other Travelers.
*Many of the Travelers on this mission would know each other, but others will be from different branches of the Travelers and won't know most of the others.

Some common reasons people join: family members; discovering the Opposite and the Travelers on their own; being approached by a member, however, this usually only happens in cases of extremely skilled scientists/researchers/other people they think would be crucial to have; etc.)
Specialization: (Some common ones would be geography, geology, cartography, physics, history, psychology, sociology, biology, etc. Many members of theirs also belong/belonged to the military. Some likely specializations for this specific mission would be geology, geography, biology, and cartography.)
