...for we have sinned.

It was always rumored that the apocalypse would one day come, but with all the false calls in the past no one believed them this time. We should have believed them.

The apocalypse has finally come. God has come back to earth, taken up all the faithfuls, and have left the sinners to die. Everyone good or pure is now gone, leaving to world to criminals, drug addicts, and murderers. You are one of the left behind, but there is hope for some of you - those with angelic descent. But just as there are Angels there are Demons, some of you are of demonic descent. Some of you just want to watch this world burn.

Your Role:

Exorcists:

These are those of you of angelic descent.

It is your job to roam this now forsaken earth and evacuate demonic influence. The people left behind are all evil in their ways, yes, but demons have begun their possession of the earth and it's your job to protect the rejected from them. You must remove these demons and kill them. But the main goal of these exorcism is to restore God's faith in humanity and get him to give the Earth a second chance. This can be achieved by convincing as many people as you can to atone for their sins. And, also, you are saving your own soul from destruction.

There are two types of Exorcists:

Extractors - those who remove the demons. They are the only ones with the ability to bless, heal, and seal. Sealing demons requires taking the demon's soul and putting it in something inanimate blessed by an Extractor. This method is used when the demon is too powerful to be killed. Once the demon is sealed it's easier for the Vanquishers to destroy. Most Vanquishers pair with an extractor.

Vanquishers - those who do the actual killing of the demon. They are the only ones with the power to kill the demons. They use magical weapons - not raw magic - to fight. They use magic runes to fight. Rune fighting involves taking a symbol and then invoking it. Runes can do a number of things, depending on what you draw, so use your imagination. Invoking should be done in latin. Good luck with that. @Judas

If the exorcist fail in their quest they will be handed over to the mercy of Lucifer for all of eternity.

Demons:

Those of you of demonic descent.

It is your job to prepare the world for Lucifer's arrival. Your only goal is to mess things up as much as you possibly can. This means you're the ones possessing people, spreading around sin. You don't want the return of God. Lucifer has granted you a spot in his army if you can stop the return. You like things this way, and you plan to keep them exactly as they are now.

There are also two types of Demons:

Summoners - those who call the demon forth. Summoners are the only ones who are able to call a demon to them willingly by process of a summoning ritual. They fight using the demons they summon, but they can only summon one demon at a time. They are also able to use a small margin of curse type black magic as well as protection magic.

Implanters - those who infect the body with the demon. They are the only ones with the power to seal demons, just like Vanquishers, but they are able to put the soul in people and animals. They fight using the people they have possessed, and can wield up to ten bodies at a time, but the bodies become weaker the more you wield at once, and are already weaker than a pure demon soul. They are also able to use a small margin of attack type black magic.

If the demons fail... well... try not to fail. There will be no mercy, or any relief in death.

Setting:

This is a modern storybook. It's 2015 at the start of the apocalypse. These are modern characters with normal 21-century lives, pre-apocalypse of course. Try to keep that in mind when writing them.

Our setting is post-apocalyptic America. The world is pretty much gone to shit now. Buildings have crumbled, communities have been disrupted, ash and debris and rubble everywhere. People mostly travel by foot as cars don't work anymore, neither do electronics. So it's as if this modern world was suddenly thrust back into medieval times. For the sake of convenience, this takes place in New York.

Profiles:

Please remember that all characters are still human once you take the powers given to them away. They have been humans all their lives, and are still human, just with the powers their respective lords have given them.

Keep in mind that Exorcists or Demons did not exactly ask for the bloodline they were born into. Maybe some could even be cheering for the other team...

Angel and Demon suggestions.

Ruil "Kanga" Gro

"Take it off."

Ruil woke up as if he was only pretending to be asleep, a sly smile already tugging at his lips. He saw the orb first - pulsing and radiating light, poised right in between his eyes - and then he saw Taski. His red hair was glowing almost as bright as the orb - back-lit by the early morning sunlight streaming in from the gaping hole in the bedroom's north wall; glowing almost as bright as his eyes, literally white from something other than rage. Ruil smiled at him and batted his eyelashes playfully, causing an audible growl to rumble from deep in Tas' throat. It was then Ruil noticed the other man's heavy breathing and clammy skin.

"Morning, beautiful."

"I'll fucking kill you, Kanga. I swear. Take. It. Off."

Sighing, Ruil pushed himself into sitting, making sure to avoid the orb that stalked his every move.

"It's just a little test. I wasn't gonna let you die, honey," he drawled, voice dripping sugar.

"Don't fucking 'honey' me, you piece of shit."

"Fine. Come here. And put that thing away."

The orb backed a foot away but stayed hovering and malicious. Ruil cocked his head at it and dared to lean closer.

"What does it do?"

"Keep talking and-"

A hacking cough interrupted Taski's reply, hard enough to knock him down on one knee. Ruil watched with an amused grin for a few moments before hopping off the edge of his bed to grab a tube of lipstick from his bedside table. He drew a fairly simple rune on the back of Taski's neck, all while the man was still hacking, and recited a quick chant. Immediately Taski's condition improved. In that same moment, Ruil was knocked to the ground by a powerful blow to the cheek.

How many punches followed after that, he didn't know. At some point he attempted to fight back, but gave up on that nearly immediately. Instead he lay and accepted the blows like he was craving them - maybe he was-, let his body go limp, smile never wavering except to let way to a quick grimace. When it was over they both sat on the floor in silence, shoulder to shoulder - Taski panting and slick with sweat; Ruil panting and slick with blood. Ruil's skin was littered with runes, all glowing slightly and burning more than he cared to admit, fixing the damage done in the minutes before. Wordlessly, he let his head loll onto Taski's shoulder and procured a pack of cigarettes from underneath the bed. They both shared a smoke.

---

He watched the ground rumble and break from his bedroom window. Never in his life had he been so excited. Demons sprung up from the ground like weeds - black and inky and twisting - and he felt a longing in his heart. Hand against the glass pane, he watched, mouth agape, eyes wide, nearly drooling. Taski lay on the bed behind him, snoring softly, oblivious, sleeping through the apocalypse. He noticed the figures immediately as they arrived, one welcoming, one menacing. His hand gripped his gun on instinct and shot, uselessly, into the one closet to Taski. The one closest to him laughed for a long while at the attempt. The other scooped Taski into his arms and fled. He would have given chase if the remaining figure didn't demand his full attention.

"Grandson," it boomed. "We have some catching up to do."

---

Ruil paced around the perimeter of the room, hands clasped behind his back. The sound of struggling played like music in the background, mixing with the melodic tones of Taski's grunts and groans of effort as he dragged each person, one by one, into the middle of their own personal illustration. It was symphonic. He hummed along.

When everyone was situated Taski collapsed in the corner of the room, wiping sweat off his brow and content to observe. Ruil watched him out of the corner of his eye as he took a small container out of his pocket and poured out what could have been sugar. Just as he started to lean down, eyes hungry, Ru turned away.

"Let's get to work then, shall we," he sighed, already wanting to go back to bed.

He sat down in the middle of his own rune and began the long process of summoning.

It took longer than it should have, mostly due to the still lasting effects of Taski's 'good morning', but eventually it paid off. A dark shadow appeared in front of Ruil, vibrating with excitement. Ruil bowed out of respect and started to speak before he was cut off by the demon noticing Taski in the corner and making a move to attack.

"A friend," he explained, quickly. "More of an asset to us than these... gutter trash traitors here. These failures of men have been communicating with the Exorcists - you're familiar I'm sure. They say they want to repent," he spat the word. "I've been noticing them trying to start up a little church of sorts. Hilarious, really. I would have burned down the whole thing, but I think this lesson will prove more fruitful in the end. Take a body and remind these men - this church - why they were left behind. Have as much fun as you want. There's an Implanter in the next room. I've told her you'd come to her when you're ready. Choose wisely. You can kill the leftover two as a treat."

"You're too kind."

The voice appeared inside of his head, low and rumbling.

"I try to be," he replied. "You know, Grandpa Bee recommended you. Don't disappoint."

A haunting laugh filled his head before the shadow shot off towards the closet captive. Ruil didn't even bother to watch. Instead he made his way towards the door, yawning loudly and stretching his stiff joints.

"Ready, Taski," he asked as he approached his friend.

"In a minute," Tas replied, wiping his nose.

"I'm hungry. How do pancakes sound for breakfast?"

"Great."

"Good because you're cooking."

Taski laughed out loud and stood.

"In your dreams."

------

A/N: Done. Nothing too serious, just a gentle easing in to the setting and environment. So, so far, there's a small "church" being set up that Ru is trying to take down. Also, even though we don't see it here, Taski is running a business where he sells protection charms to non-descendants to keep them safe. Great way to get important supplies like batteries and generators and whatnot. Demon activity isn't so prevalent in the day time - let's stick to the cliche of demons not liking sunlight - so things will be less hectic on the streets during sun-up.

In the winter months, snowstorms and rainfall in the Patagonian Ice Fields can drastically affect the landscape. Worsened by heavy winds, such storms can reduce visibility and lead to glacial calving, ice collapses, and avalanches. During these conditions, travel is not advised.
