The characters are exactly what they sound like: soulmates. This is why they all share the same birthday (October 21st, 2000) and why they often find unfamiliar designs on their skin. However, this is where the similarities between this storybook and the popular fanfiction trope ends. They are soulmates in the sense that their souls are undeniably connected to the souls of other people, and in the sense that this connection causes physical changes to them. The differences lie in the connection itself and how any message is transmitted. The connection has nothing to do with love, though the real explanation will take some time to appear in the actual storybook.
The way a drawing/note/stain is transmitted from person to person might seem a little complicated, so here's a simple way to describe it – it's a one way message. If person A writes a note on their right arm, it'll appear on person B's right arm. If person B tries to write back on their right arm, that new message will appear on person C's right arm. If there was only three people in this scenario, the doodle that person C makes on their right arm would appear on person A's right arm.
