Why do we capital-N Nerds love Mars so much? Because it's beautiful, it's tough, it's buried in our mythic, childhood memories. It's covered with human triumphs but also with sad stories of failure.
So almost everyone must have a phone, most likely with internet access. Does this mean everyone is capable of calling their families, going on news sites and checking out social meadia? Or is somehow everything shut down?
Oh it would be quite possible. However, (And I have done study into this sort of disaster before) Imagine everyone in a single area calling emergency services at the same time. Cell towers can only cover so much, But after the first 24 hours most lines would then be free. Internet would be available for maybe four or five days before lack of maintenance would eventually fry everything. Also electricity would likely disappear after a couple days without people running and checking the different plants.
It's global, seeming to hit everywhere at once. That's the true horror. If there are any stations still going, all of them would be talking about this pandemic.
