& they shall beat their swords into plowshares
& their spears into pruninghooks:
nation shall not lift up sword against nation
neither shall they learn war any more
(Isaiah 2:4)

& all these loose-ends
shall bind into a net . . .

NaPo 2023 | alliyah | "& all these loose-ends"

Image

polysyndeton - "is a figure of speech in which coordinating conjunctions—words such as "and," "or," and "but" that join other words or clauses in a sentence into relationships of equal importance—are used several times in close succession, particularly where conjunctions would normally not be present at all."

& sometimes the best poetry is contained in conjunctions & the stray margin note, or the trailing edge of a thought unfinished, or ...

I plan to shamelessly recycle loose-ends from previous poems this April. As well as think through some of the "loose-ends" that have bound together into the tapestry that I am, or my family is, or we are, or... expect lots of "over-use" of ampersands (&) and maybe some faith and ancestry poems thrown into this soup and maybe some string / sewing allusions and we'll see what else...

& good luck in your poetry this month!

& goals
30 poems
1 song
60 comments

& other loose-ends
2022 NaPo - anchors tied to paper boats
2021 NaPo - years lost to locusts
2020 NaPo Pt I - i swear all the birds will live until the end
2020 NaPo Pt II - private reflections; cheap cheap software
2019 NaPo - love and complementary colors
2018 NaPo - heavy dreams & lofty responsibilities
2017 NaPo - a collage of mismatched contemplations
Camp NaPo - 2017 logbook, 2020 logbook, 2021 NaPo Week

-- an introduction --

--- 1. i'm not trying to write anything new |
we've been here before, & we'll be here again

Image

Spoiler! :
& i won’t deny April is always an echo;
everything here has been said before
the wind says to the spring-bird,
the rain says to the parched-earth,
the tree says to her new-born leaves,
but that doesn’t mean we will be silent.
for some things worth saying,
are worth saying again; & again;
& again. & isn’t this how seasons pass?
everything is different, & yet;
we’re all just the same.
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

--- 2. the tide; always returning

a re-write of my first NaPo Poem - 4/1/2017

Image

Spoiler! :
i sold my soul for a train-ticket to the moon;
thinking you wouldn’t catch me here,
but i should have known you’d appear -
(you always do) & haven’t i learned by now
everything worth holding, seems to be made of star-dust.

so we do our little dance,
( - you pretend you’ve left,
& i pretend i don’t care - )
i imagine this is how asteroids feel when they collide
all this empty space in the universe – & you just had to be
taking up room in the same place and time as me.

we are two ships that pass in the night,
both pretending we’re fast asleep
until once again, by some act of fate’s gravity;
the intuition of the tide to obey the moon,
we arrive once more on common shores.
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

wow ali! these poems are amazing. i love how you highlight the ampersands. your first poem is my favorite; of spring going the motions it's gone through for thousands of years, yet being different each time. amazing start to your napo! <3

--- 3. intermission | Holy Saturday

"Just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will be the Son of Man in the heart of the earth” - Matthew 12:40

the sun, heavy-laden with grief, rose slowly
into a horizon striped with a gruesome crimson
as if the whole earth felt the lashes he bore
the mountains kept vigil, casting long shadows,
while the trees cast their leaves into the air
in mournful supplication, water stilled, wind ceased.
all was so bitterly quiet, except the bird's lament -
for the sparrows assembled in conclave,
voting still to sing, if only to give voice to his absence.

there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

4. the tide; always leaving ---

Image

i'd like to give you back some of these pieces of sea glass -
you're always leaving, then turning, you're always leaving me drowning,
but i suppose it's my fault too; i'm always falling in love with all this
broken glittering glass.
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

--- 5. counting stitches

"sometimes i still keep track of time,
according to where you said you'd be
like someone following a star
that's burned out of the sky
a thousand years ago -
but i know. you're just
stardust.

--- 6. you & i

we have this way of orbiting; you & i
as if we are held a universe-away,
latched by an invisible string - you
tell me one hundred years after you're gone
what it's like to see the sun rising over the harvest prairie
(quiet & steady like the way your father used to sing;
& the same color as autumn-grain; light reincarnated
from the edge of yesterday born into tomorrow)
& i see your poetry written through the stars -
light reincarnated; & i tell you
that i am your daughter, or maybe in the same strange way
that time keeps hold of its strings, & roots, & reflections - i am you -
or maybe we are watching the same sunrise, or maybe
you have already heard me tell you all this before.
we have this way of orbiting; you & i.

i don’t believe in reincarnation
because heaven is vast and full;
but i believe i can hear the echoes of my ghosts
like water rippling from long ago.

April 2021

Spoiler! :
I am interested in how sometimes it seems like my ancestors may have known me, or that I know them - I am interested in how we live the same life, and yet we are separated by space, and time, and experience - what are these strings latched tightly from mother, to daughter and back-again, are we all just impossibly the same?

This week my dad is visiting me for a week, and I'm enjoying hearing him tell me little bits of his life story and enjoying telling him little snippets I've learned about our ancestry history - so much of it seems fitting like "of course" this is who that is and who we are.
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

7. photo-keeping ---

Image

Spoiler! :

i am a shameless picture hoarder; polaroid-edges folded in and twiddling my thumbs / nervously wondering if you think this is silly / of course it's silly / of could you think i am silly / but i still want a picture of the way you smile when you say my name, and how your hair catches the light - and how i think you're blonde, but your mother says brunette, and how you laugh when i say that / and how i love when you laugh / and i'm afraid / if i don't catch one now / you will be gone / you know... no one holds tight, what they believe is tied securely down / and i am afraid / desperately afraid that you will leave / of course you'll leave / of course you're thinking of it now - / but i still would like a picture / if only to hold on to you a bit longer.

you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

Spoiler! :
ok LOVE the formatting of 6, with the italicization of you & i throughout the poem, and the concept of connection with all of the orbiting / string imagery is so pleasant and cohesive.
i tell you
that i am your daughter, or maybe in the same strange way
that time keeps hold of its strings, & roots, & reflections

^^ These lines are gorgeous!

And your latest poem 7 is also so well-written; the formatting of it also serves its purpose so strongly! It feels very honest, intimate, and kind of just like a continuous train of thought slowly expanding. It feels vulnerable and I love it.

---8. falling

there is in this universe perhaps nothing so horrifying as falling in love.
you live your whole life trying to learn who you are,
& protect what you want,
& fly as far as your wings can stretch -
& one day the sky falls
& you realize you want what they want,
you want them, you desperately want them to be happy, to thrive,
to notice every flower and assume it's grown for them,
to be greeted by every sunrise, and for every word to fall gentle on their heart
& you desperately want to know them,
as close as you know yourself,
& you realize you didn't know yourself as well as you thought -
that in fact the sky is infinite - & your wings are stronger than you hoped.
there is nothing in this universe so horrifying as falling in love;
except maybe falling-out-of love
when one day the sky falls
& you with it
& you are only left in this infinite unknowing
with a sky that will not hold you,
with a desperate ache in your chest as if your wings were severed from your body,
& knowing only that you don't know yourself.
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

The juxtaposition of that first line, then the repetition on the ending? Yeeeeees.
