27. The Strategist

The purple flowers on the mountain trail,
like paper flattened on the soggy dirt,
take with them my secrets, even hail
could not make them tell, I am assured.

There is no tale of someone’s misadventure
walking up to seek forbidden summits,
against which the village people lecture,
in fear of seeing that she slips and plummets.

They have no recollection – not of me,
who was collecting memories in full.
The teeming inn, the trees, as jauntily,
I sauntered off to chase a mysterious pull.

All this so that I’ll always know
how to leave and let things go.

28. The Guard

The puny human entered through the gates,
her feathered plume a pale and faded blue.
A diarist in a place from long-forgotten dates,
her pencil brashly scratching – she didn’t have a clue.

But steely eyes looked up at me full-armoured,
the glow in them was echoed by the fire.
When I moved my axe she briefly faltered,
but finally she claimed I was a liar.

She claimed my riddle was a simple trick,
my joints were old and stuck with orange rust.
Bypassing me, she solved the dungeon, quick,
the looming walls now crumbled into dust.

My pride and post now torn up at the seams,
I stepped into the sound of birds and streams.

Spoiler! :
The idea for this was to write a poem from the point of view of one of those statue guards that come to life in video games, as they are defeated by the game's protagonist. @Spearmint somehow the diarist that came up in this poem reminds me a bit of Sunny xD

Spoiler! :
Ooh, interesting perspective for sure! =D And xD yeah, her confidence and spunk are like Sunny’s… but I could def see this protagonist as a unique character of her own story too! Love the blue plume detail ^^

29. The Night by the Lake

One summer’s night I looked up from the camp.
The sky was big, and dark, and wary of me.
The breeze had left my skin. The air was damp.
Cicadas cried and chirped relentlessly.

I searched the black for pinpricks of red stars,
the eyes of beasts beyond the human realm.
A growl would thunder up above, then pass,
retreating by a constellation’s helm.

The warrior made of lights would pierce a hole
for creatures to escape through and arrive
securely on the other side. No soul
devoured, leaving us on Earth alive.

Then dawn dripped down, last evening was embalmed.
The radiant surface of the lake had calmed.

Spoiler! :
The imagery is a little random in this one, but a future revision can work with that.

30. The Quest's End

The trees were floating in the soup of dawn,
the myriad birds arrived to preen and peck.
I tilted down the path that meandered on,
searching for a castle in a shipwreck.

The shadow rose up slowly in the mist:
the afterimage of a mast askew.
The topmost deck lopsided, cracked, it kissed
the sands and broke open a door anew.

Beneath the deck, the wooden pigeon's beak
was holding, gears jammed shut, the pearl I sought.
It shimmied side to side, its legs would creak.
Diluted light fell on the treasure it caught.

As I approached, I found the pearl was dull.
The pigeon's dance illuminated the hull.

Spoiler! :
I wish I would have had time to read your thread sooner! As soon as I read
The trees were floating in the soup of dawn,

a smile spread across my face at the beautiful imagery! The rhyming in that poem is also just *chef's kiss*
I will definitely be coming back after finals to read the rest of these poems <3

Great job at completing NaPo!

Spoiler! :

Ah!! Congratulations on completing NaPo, Lim! A really polished and solid thread, I don't think I could manage 5 sonnets in a month let alone 30, so I really commend you for staying at it and also writing them with such readability!

Your final poem is really the perfect note to end on. Love a good conclusion. :) the final line cracks me up a bit, and definitely made me smile.

I really like the "Seafaring Knight" - it was mysterious and sort of spun my imagination around trying to figure out the subject's story. I liked that closing couplet too: "Surrendering their secrets all to me / would forfeit their own treasured destiny."

The "Strategist" also felt like a snippet of a larger story - and the idea of leaving nothing behind and what might motivate them to do so was interesting too.

The imagery in poem 29 is really nice - and I especially liked your use of personification of the sky, "The sky was big, and dark, and wary of me." such an unusual / unexpected way to describe the sky as wary - but sets up the mood of the poem really nicely!

Enjoyed following along with your thread this month! Great work!
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return
