Spoiler! :
These past few months for me have been about self discovery and personal growth, so as well as falling in love with water imagery, I hope to create a small poetry collection in varying shades of the ocean to capture what I've been feeling. I'm aiming for 18 poems(in keeping with my title theme), and at least one song. They will likely be mostly dark in nature, but I hope lighter shades of blue will find their way out as well <3

Previous years:
2019: stardust in an hourglass
2018: a garden of stars and cats

~1~
Oxford blue

this far beneath the waves,
you'd think it would be silent;
a blanket of solitude--
head empty, thoughts leeched out.
laying on the ocean floor,
somehow still falling deeper,
i'm left with no respite
from the monsters inside--
the last sound through the miles deep.

i'm so tired
and the weight above is so easy to succumb to.

when it's dark like this,
it's easy to forget how deep i've fallen.
no one taught me how to swim
so i forget how to breathe
and keep sinking,
not sure anyone could find me down here.

it's almost comforting how scared i am.
it's so cold i've become numb
and can't remember a time before.

it's hard to be homesick for a time you don't remember.

i want to give up and yet-
i don't know how to stop living.

i know the waves will keep churning above
as my body fades into the brackish tides,
but will the sea know how to fill in the space i once took up?

maybe i'll have to stay a little longer to ask it.

for now, the darkness will have to do.
the demons from the shadows listen better than the fish.
the fish like to give arbitrary advice and empty encouragement
and they usually swim away before i can explain
that i don't know how to breathe
with crippled lungs full of algae.

i hope one day i'll learn, at least,
how to get somewhere from all this nowhere.

Just dropping by to say that I lovee the line "with crippled lungs full of algae". It uses such vibrant imagery that connects well to the poem and is so original and inspiring. Your theme in general is really neat, and I like the free-form style of this poem as well! It definitely suits the subject material. Great work so far!! Keep it up!

Spoiler! :
@Tuckster Thank you! <3

~2~
Cerulean heart

The haze at the edge of the horizon,
where the endless sky caresses the sea,
will push and pull my heart forever in,
the only place that will leave my soul free.

It whispers secrets from six miles deep,
romantic hopes of those sunken and lost.
Old stories to keep, and not for the meek,
tales of grandeur as comfort for the cost.

Like a sailor to a siren, I must.
I can't deny the longing of my heart.
In love, often the mind is lack to trust,
but alas, left mortal, I stay apart.

At the shore, I stand, waves whispering, "Come."
Someday soon, to my love, I will succumb.

Spoiler! :
Technically this is supposed to be a sonnet, but iambic pentameter is a pain so it's a stretch xD

a shade of black-blue

the tides are moving again;
pulling me in,
deeper, deeper.

with no point of reference,
i suppose i could be going anywhere,
but deeper says the sinking in my gut.
there's nothing to hold, all this empty way down.
the waves are so silent when you're this far gone,
and a shout travels half as far as you can see
in the depths of this pitch-black world.

it hard to keep going when you can't see anyplace to go to.

i've become numb with adrenaline and thalassophobia,
unable to remember anything but fear
as the abyss leaks my reality away.
i'm still where you see me,
dutifully going to get knowledge stuffed in my brain,

but the ocean they toss it into
is left churning and crashing,
silently,
flooding through the creavasses of my mind.

an ocean dream

i remember standing at the edge of the ocean.
the whisper-crash of the briny tides rolling in,
the caress of warm sand ever shifting with the whip of salt-laden air,
the screech of sea birds, crying for breadcrumbs,
the empty tower chair a ghostly beacon through the early morning light.
was it a memory or only a dream?
i stood still for a while, lost in the lull of the moon-pulled waters,
until my thoughts melted away.

~~5~~
shoreside memories past

i miss those days at the seashore,
briny mist curling my hair
as the sea breathed out from the depths;
sand, oh how i miss the floor of sand,
ever shifting, yes, but something to stand on,
to ground oneself with the tiny sting of sharp shells--
a real ground made of real things,
nothing like the depths i drift through,
no bottom, no end
to this black silence filling my lungs--
falling in before i even knew i could fall,
dipping my toes in, the tides rose silently around me
and i ended up here before i even realized i could

before i could think to say goodbye to the seashore,
it was 18 miles behind.

hiya BlueCat! <3 Gosh I've been reading these poems and I have to say, you're so good at using line and stanza breaks to create super impactful pauses. Like the way you format "it's hard to be homesick for a time you don't remember." on its own line in poem 1 - first of all, HEARTWRENCHING LINE EEP </3 and second of all, it's so much more striking when it's on its own like that, it doubles the heartwrenching factor and overall just aAAAH !!

also also also I just -- am IN LOVE with water imagery, like I use way too much of it in my poems -- and I'm so happy to see you doing water imagery credit with your beautiful poetry, I cannot even put it into words :')) Some of my favourite images -> "the waves are so silent when you're this far gone," " whip of salt-laden air" "lost in the lull of the moon-pulled waters," "as the sea breathed out from the depths;" & PRETTY MUCH ALL THE OTHER IMAGES TOO. It's all just *chef's kiss*

You have an awesome 5 poems here, you should be proud of yourself <3
When you're faced with something you don't understand, I think the most natural thing but also least interesting thing you can be is afraid.
