napo 2021.png

an introduction to this napo:

stuck behind the scenes, between the notes.
song: a creation of art, typically accompanied by sounds or words.

Past NaPos
20 - i liked it better when my fears were faceless
19 - these benedight flowers
18 - my hopes are as strong as bubbles

Spoiler! :
not me pouring out my love and my pain and my loneliness into possibly nonsensical songs and poems that may be all named after bts songs.

it could be fun to do two versions for each song, but maybe i just could have two different beginnings with the same ending, to link everything together.

i. spring day

a.
11832CC5-4C10-47A3-A07D-5D8F9AB3F96A.jpeg

Spoiler! :
if it’s your voice i’m hearing then
i’d like to apologize first, before
i start crying and ask you when
i’ll next see you without a door

wooden or metal tall in between
us both, even if you’re a spirit
giving me hopes that will wean
away like the sun with every visit

but can i still ask if you’ve missed
anything from here, tiptoeing around
whether you’ve missed the blissed
days in may before spring drowned

i don’t know what month is today,
and i won’t know anyway because
i cut up every calendar that say
how time passes but will never pause.

(bogo shipda = i miss you)

b.

Spoiler! :
have you ever stepped, slipped on a train,
or on the tracks, letting your head sink
and closing, shutting your eyes so your brain
opens instead and listens for the brink,
whatever final thing will make everything
click and make sense of an empty drink?

maybe we are imprisoned, to stay here forever
in the spring and winter, you with the pink roses
and beach waves, too strong a barrier to sever
and either the flowers’ smells that hurt our noses,
or the snow, whereas i’m in an ever-cold winding lever
of white, seeking warmth, which the weather opposes

but i swear i’ll be there at that last station,
with your favorite flowers clutched in my hands,
and i’ll eat only some of the last cake ration
so you’ll smile and take off your rubber bands
to wind the purple ones you named elation
around our pinkies, and meet our last stands.

ii. the truth untold

01D960BA-1A6B-4AF0-896E-60CA52B4D7B4.jpeg

Spoiler! :
if two lovers can fall into such a sorrow-dipped story,
how can we fight off our own demons and our fate?
for we can promise love constructs, teary on the lorry,
but there isn’t a way to keep from lingering in our hate,
not unless we toss our hearts, stained red by our hurry,
once the last campfire shortens to embers and wait,

wait for what, you might have asked, a hand reaching
towards me, reminiscent of running through grass
barefoot, or hearing your laughter amidst screeching
from our parents, when we drove six hours after class
to get that soft, blue bouquet someone was preaching
would grant us luck, but the petals split like glass

and in my hoodie, we laid the shards out, one by one,
imagining that our fingers caught on the sharp edges, for
we were only young in that breath of a moment, done
with being ruled by the archaic overseers that only tore
at us, at our fragile connection that couldn’t be outdone
by anyone besides ourselves, for we had barely begun.

iii. seesaw

060A2FAE-61AB-4EAF-B680-11E15094CFEB.jpeg

Spoiler! :
i both loved and hated going to the playground
as a kid, because my height forced me into a lot
of awkward growing spaces, and i was left to sound
loud my frustration at missing monkey bars, out
whining that annoyed my parents but i finally found
a metal structure to call a sanctuary, to be a blot

of a regular human against the cloudy sky, lasting but
a few seconds before the swing touched back down and i
found myself useless, in pushing hard enough to shut
off the gravity switch, letting my legs dangle and fly
but the uncomfortable seat digs into my legs and what
ever else i squeezed as needed, fit enough for a try

at this magical sensation of free falling amongst color,
the splash of yellow and brown wood chips, in pieces
so tiny i lost count, quitting when my brain felt duller,
but this old playground can still be counted as a decent
one by kids’ standards, although the seesaw lent taller
passengers more strength when their height increases.

Spoiler! :
Thank you so much @Valkyria ! I really hope to get good imagery going so this feedback makes me happy. ^^

iv. jamais vu

C03733D1-E294-47D9-8698-3564BA64D4A5.jpeg

Spoiler! :
you left me gasping, grasping onto strings, digging in
the material, creasing over my skin, criss cross pain
but i don’t know whether to curse and hate you, bin
all of our happy halo-effects memories, leave a stain

in the back of my mind whenever i try to think of fun
times or trips or days and not when i tripped five times at
the old softball field, spilling the last expensive mini bun
on the ground, and you spun your feet, like an acrobat

except you tripped and fell on your face, and your blood
still stains that dirt to this very day, right by the stupid
chain link fences that never did anything besides flood
the seats with screams and shouts that left games ruined

do you ever think of that? do you ever want to turn back
the times, it hasn’t been that long, right, we can start again,
restart, turn the clock, break through your chest and attack
whatever entrapped you in their cage, i’ll break the bargain

(i won’t give up.)

v. let go

A2C81632-A445-4FC7-BCBC-B01004140F67.jpeg

Spoiler! :
i never thought we’d face each other here, on
opposite sides, a struggle between pushing
away, sinking into the sand before dawn,
and begging a deity to prevent an ambushing

of every song i scribbled out, and every image
you painted on a blank canvas, straight through
every neuron, fueling a one-person scrimmage
in my head, to stop a flashback even if it’s true

cause i don’t want the truth, not when it means
letting go of your hand, this hand i fell in love
with, when i grabbed your fingers in our teens
and our palms fit more perfectly than a glove,

but that feeling disappointed like the flower
patches do every year when the drought dries
out the grass and leaves brown dirt all over,
but i never thought you would ignore my cries.

(i’m [not] ready to let go.)

vi. wings

6F7F19B3-54FA-4677-812B-480FE864AD1D.jpeg

Spoiler! :
i wanted warm feathers as a child,
figuring i would grow up, i could
float above my roof, or near the wild
lands that consituted where i should

never travel to, if my parents' warnings
were correct and not simply born
from superstitions left for mournings
towards the dead and not me sworn

to keep my safety and health in check,
and learning that alone fared better in this
place, in the mist surrounding my neck
and not others' lives trapped in their bliss

and so these wings i'm cursed with now
lay heavy, far more of a brace than a
sign of freedom i once wasted a vow
on, since only i can force my own way.

Perks!! Gosh WOW you are so good at rhyming schemes, what the hecc O.O All your rhymes fit so well I barely even notice they're there, like they just belong, you know? Which is so tricky to do but so beautiful and lovely when achieved properly <333

Also just love the aesthetic going on in this thread, I adore the kind of doodly-notebook vibe a lot of the backgrounds have ^^

And gaaah that third stanza of let go is oof </3 very stark and sad and vivid. "cause i don't want the truth, not when it means / letting go of your hand" ;-;

I think some of my absolute favourite lines are from jamais vu -> "you left me gasping, grasping onto strings, digging in / the material, creasing over my skin, criss cross pain" especially have some GORGEOUS sound devices!!

Keep it up!! Can't wait to see how many more awesome poems you write over NaPo <333
When you're faced with something you don't understand, I think the most natural thing but also least interesting thing you can be is afraid.

vii. tear

5A681522-7637-4378-AB28-8EA7D8EFF6EA.jpeg

Spoiler! :
instead of a heart attack, or a broken heart,
is it possible to simply have a heart tear,
your fragile muscle still beating but apart,
for when someone said goodbye and their
footsteps stopped echoing, it's your fault
and thus you stew in anger built from fear

for if this person could walk away, without
much of a worry for anyone not with their name,
how can you ever declare yourself safe, doubt
that you'll ever be able to open your heart, shame
seeping in, were they only with you for clout,
and so you shield yourself from the blame

so walk away, you remind yourself the second
time around, walk away first so they read along
the slope of your back and ignore their beckon
to forgive and shake of feelings that don't belong
because your heart hurts worse each check-in
and you can't push your limbs to stand strong.

(you're my tear.)

viii. the best of me

CCB1531D-D207-4995-BF9A-669BFB99AEF8.jpeg

Spoiler! :
it wasn't something i should have asked
i recognize that now, but still it rests on my
tongue, what i can't turn away, too basked
in that sensation, of the wind asking why
i stood still, with my hands outreaching past
me and past you, past what made me try

so hard every day for a year, to keep us both
happy and settled, so i didn't ask if this is what
we're required, layers representing our oath
we belonged to, no matter every fight that
begged me to look past our invisible growth
and see through that pale, thin, screen, flat

against our skin, not meant to be viewed
with a naked eye, but my questioning brought
this fact to our obscure surface, skewed
though our emotions may be, in this drought
of tears from our air-snared arguments, brewed
in this hole we've dug, with a single thought

[maybe this is the best we'll be.
is this enough for you, for me?]

Spoiler! :
thank you so much for your lovely comment @whatchamacallit !!!! i've being hard at work looking up rhymes aha so i'm glad you appreciate the effort ahah <333

ix. friends

FA902EF9-BE1B-46BD-A692-7FB411B39A14.jpeg

Spoiler! :
i hope that you remember
that old twilight poster
that made me a member
of that fun rollercoaster

before everyone jumped
off and bailed once we
saw glitter and bumped
our cars along to the sea

for if we wanted something
that sparkled, might as
join along the fun and swing
into a new boat that has

just enough gas to carry
us back to where we started:
pokemon, before a fairy
was a type you charted.

am i feeling sentimental?
perhaps. perhaps i've just
felt a bit judgemental
towards my past and dust

(off the memories,
my old friend.)

x. mama

i think i don’t know what to say to you
not when we’re staring down this road,
of my feet standing in dirt five feet too
deep for you to pull me out of this slowed

freeway, created for those with dreams
who are crushed under heavy responsibilities
and fill their abandoned cars with streams
of tears, admitting to their useless abilities

but you always stood there, ready and able,
to be a pillar of support or a sand pit to push
me further and faster and only to enable
myself and tell my anxious brain to shush.

(i love you mama.)
