8. Release

Image

I crave the release of summer
    and what comes with it
    resting under tree limbs
    grass tickling my skin,
    soft pages fluttering
    in the breeze, endless time.

    Take away my screen
    and give me the sky
    I want to breathe in
    without deadlines
    grasping my lungs,
    lay my head down
    without tension,
    laugh without guilt.

Spoiler! :
I'm so tired of NaPo. So, here's a bad poem. I tried though so it counts :)

Ooh I think "Release" is one of my favorites from your NaPo thread this year because it's so so relatable!! I can totally feel the narrator's exhaustion from deadlines and assignments and loads and loads of work~ And that gif matches the poem perfectly <3 Your other poems are amazing too (I also especially liked "Tealight" C:), and I hope you keep writing!! ^-^
Spoiler! :
Ah and I'm sorry to hear you're tired of NaPo! Yeah, writing a poem every day is pretty hard sometimes :/ But, heh, actually I really liked "Release," despite you saying that it's a bad poem! Don't sell yourself short ^-^ Anyways I hope you find excitement and motivation soon, and have a wonderful day/night!! <3

9. Aquarium

Image

we stand in the deep blue
    staring through glass.
    behind us the rubber floor
    squeaks underneath sneakers,
    young voices echo.

    some swim, grazing
    the sand, hiding in coral.
    some float, beady eyes
    watching us. we wonder
    if they know

    they are trapped.

10. A Step Outside

Image

    the night swallows
    the neighborhood whole,
    outside the world is still.

    in the darkness
    water gurgles
    from across the fence,
    insects sing their lullabies
    from the shrubs, and
    the highway whirls softly
    like a distant storm.

the air is cool on skin,
    shivering, hairs stand tall.

    honey light spills out
    from the window, a sleepy
    cat watches curiously,
    slow blinks, yawns,

    and with the scenery
    the day melts away,
    releasing its worries
    into the black night.

11. Delayed

Image

I want to float and forget,
then, lay in the sun, turn crisp
like a t-shirt hung to dry.
feel the heat kiss my back,
    smell chlorine on my skin.

but all I can do is stare
    at the concrete hole
    in the yard, half-finished,
    delayed,

and all I can do is wait.

12. Spread Thin

Image

    tell my why
my brain feels like an empty jam jar
that I keep having to scrap the edges of,
    glass screeching against the knife.
each time I hope to get enough
and each time I take a bite,
    I’m disappointed.

I want to give you what you’re craving,
that taste you’ll come back for.
I want to be that second, third, fourth bite,
    the final piece you relish.

I wish I could give you words
    to roll off your tongue,
    dripping sweet like honey.

but instead, all I can do
    is hope there is enough
    to spread thin.

13. Cherry Blossoms

Image

I heard the cherry blossoms are falling in Vancouver,
cascading down to the blanket the streets you walk on.
I wonder what it must be like, soft petals under your feet.

Over a video call, you tell me they’re beautiful,
that I should see them next spring. Instagram
is flooded with photos, and I can’t help but think
I was supposed to be there.

Memories of our reading break in the West End
fill my mind, walking without knowing where to go.
Following the sound of seagulls and the smell of salt
to the ocean licking the sand. Finding moments
to capture on film, the wind blowing our hair,
ruining our photos, laughter as we try to pose.

Did I ever tell you, I found a recording
of the birds in Kitsilano? For three minutes
I swear I’m there. I listen to it when I miss home,
even though I was never in Vancouver long enough
for it to become my home. Perhaps they remind me
of what I thought would be.

When I see you again, will things be the same?
Comfortable silence, easy laughter, long walks
with no plan. I worry, I won’t catch you in time.
That when I get back, you’ll be done,
like the cherry blossoms blooming this spring.

Don’t worry, your poems taste better than jam. That might be partly the Easter candy I’m finishing...

And as for cherry blossoms, I felt that.

14. Phone Calls

Image

your voice is low in my ear.
I close my eyes and listen
to the mundane tasks of your day,
    to your worries, your laugh.
    the sound holds me close
    to your lips, your breath,
even though you are so far away.

    these evening calls have become
what I look forward to most.
    your voice a whisper
    nestled in my ear,

    in the absence of touch
    your words have become
    everything.

though I cannot explore the details
of your skin, I can understand
your mind, settle in it like its home.

15. Mist

Image

    the day lingers in limbo
    between rain and clear weather,
a mist hangs in the air.
    fuzzy yellow light radiates
    from distant windows.
    it’s the kind of weather
    that turns dogs into clouds,
    that blurs glasses,
    that turns the sky
    into a gray abyss.

    it’s the kind of weather
    that, somehow, makes it
    easier to breathe.

16. Still

Image

    in the absence of you
I make the most of my world.
sit in silence and watch the rainfall,
listen to the small sounds around:
    crickets singing in the grass,
    leaves rustling in the breeze,
    distance cars driving by,
the radio playing as they pass.
I don’t force myself to smile,
    to fill gaps in conversation.
    in my own silence,
    I let myself be.

17. Pillow Forts

Image

    when we were kids
    we made forts out of
    pillows and blankets,
    imagined a whole world
    within them, awed
at the way light seeped in
    through the fabric, we
    spent all morning within
    our little den.

now we hide under our quilts
put off getting out of bed
    all to avoid the world
    we live in.

Spoiler! :
I kind of unhappy with this poem. I like the idea but I don't think I executed it well. Oh well, I can always fix it later.

Hey Charm, Alice here!

You are doing an amazing job. I really like the gifs you include in your poems, they all are so good, I wonder how you get perfect gifs that match your poems.

I am impressed by the last poem, the idea is amazing. And it's so true, in the morning, I really don't want to get out of bed and into my everyday life, but I have to. Everypoem you wrote was very well written. All the best for the rest of the month.
Imagination is a superpower. Use it well!
