Masks:

We wear masks in the cities,
Pretending not to think,
We wear other masks in the country,
Saying other people’s thoughts
We wear masks at home,
Our loves and our friends and our families know not show we are.
We wear masks alone,
shielding us from ourselves.

Heroic:

If all lights must fall, let them
If the light of every human soul must fail
I will carry on
If the rain must weather every mountain to dust,
Let it, I will march on.

If every hallowed grove must burn, let them
I will walk the the flames untouched
The clouds may blaze blackly in hellfire
This empty sky may fall
Let it, I will carry it with me.

If the sun will not rise,
Give me chains great enough
And I will draw it out
To cast the sky in fire.

And if the long night must be faced,
Than let me face it,
Let me fight and die under the stars.

Let it pass:

Let the fall tides come and pass,
the winter rains may chill,
But these, in time, will pass
And fade to spring, do not grasp
For it as it leaves, it will come again,
So let the summer come,
And let it pass.

Change:

I thought of change as a woman once,
Bedding for a night and then leaving.
But now as I look back;
To friends made in elder days
and ones newly met,
To loves that have come and passed
And to the love I still hold;
I think of change now as the water of a river:
The river of time, of days gone past.
For time, to me, is change,
Some may fight it and others ignore it,
But I embrace it, I thank it for all I have:
For all things I knew my want of
And for the things I never knew I longed for.

The sixth jewel [modifide]:

Looking out at the cloud strewn sky
I sat in my chair and wondered aloud
To her: “why?”
She leaned forward, the moon shone off her hair, bright and proud.

“Well, why not?” She answered, looking oddly at me,
“It just seems odd, camping all the sudden.” I waited in silence for her answer
And watched the shades of our children flit around a tree
When her answer did come, the words were careful and graceful, like the footsteps of a dancer:

“You know the world, how cruel it can be,
Nature may be cruel, too, but it is at least true,
At least it is all jagged, honest and free;
Not velvet over a knife or fist, the knife and the fist go to the many, the velvet to the few.”

“I suppose,” I said, taking up the lighter that rested by my side
And sparked it in the fire pit. The flames roared up and flickered with the wind’s tide.

“So why do we talk about it?” she asked, looking into the shaded brake.
“Perhaps tomorrow,” I began “we could go to the lake?”

Shards of light:

Bedridden, I look to my roof and see
Folded shards of dayborn light,
Golden in midmorning.

Shards like sharpened,
Gold dyed glass
Felled and dashed upon my ceiling.

Words:

There are words drawn across the land
In the minds of some
Holy words they scream
And they draw these words in blood and tears
And they fail to remember what they are:
Words, of god or of man they are but words
So many are too keen to forget
Precious few remember this.
And the whole of the delusioned men and woman
Must remember:
A word is but a word, they will not change closed hearts
But actions will.

All your poems are so great. I love the thought behind each of them. I especially love "A world of glass", "Heroic" and the recent one "Words" . Keep up the excellent work
Even
After
All this time
The Sun never says
To the Earth
"You owe me"
Look
What happens
With a Love like that
It lights the
Whole
Sky

A woman:

My love is a woman made of water
And the water is words.
I wish to embrace her,
but when I try,
My arms pass through empty air.

I’m in love with a woman I can only see unmoving,
Like Apollo and daphne.
But unlike those two: the sun and the tree,
I may hear at least her her thoughts,
If not through voice voice than through words.

It is a pitiful burning longing and love,
Like an empty stomach while you lie in bed,
Trying to sleep, but cannot,
For the ache keeps you up.

Such a burning is lust, surely,
Some say.
It may be a sort of lust,
But my greatest lust
is to be able to see my love,
To see her laugh,
To see her lean forward and backward
And blink as she talks,
But alas:

My love is a woman made of words
And the words are water.
I wish to embrace her,
but when I try,
My arms pass through empty air.

Polyhedron
Or
A portrait:

I, like most,
Am one with many sides.
Some sides are bright
And others dark,
Still others are neither,
And simply are.

There are sides of love,
Of hope,
Of hate,
Of fear,
Of anger,
And more I cannot name.

I am multi-sided
As a die is multi-sided,
And spinning similarly
Through life and through space.

Rome:

Here I pay my meager tribute
To a city near three thousand years my elder,
Who has weathered madness of elder days
And of days whose scars have freshly healed,
Whose streets have been walked by men
Whose names and actions are legends.

Augustus,
First of the empire, the rising sun
Trajan,
The conqueror, the burning midday
Aurelian,
The last blaze before the starless, hopeless, deathly night

Here, in awe I stand,
In awe of the world around me.
A world buried in time near immeasurable
With buildings that stand and remain kept and used longer than the lives of many nations.

I have come to pay my respects to you,
Rome, the eternal flame,
The ever standing stone in history’s stormy sea.
You have stood for over two thousand years!
Pray, stand two thousand more!

Nonsense poem
Or
The Spanish Inquisition

No one expects the Spanish Inquisition
To come into your room with ham sandwich swords
Your room, of course, is small.
And it is floating above the ocean,
Which is colored and flavored like the lies of politicians.

Like grandparents in elderly cars or young cars
And despite their obsoletion,
They still remain alive
In the minds of madmen like me
And in the bewildered minds of readers like you.

Days:

These days, They pass into night,
Sun leaving in a fury and the moon coming quietly,
And leaving in a whisper of gray.
But it is not the sunset or the sunrise that preoccupy me,
But the twilight, the oldest age of day, the final breaths of sunlight,
The closing of already lidded eyes,
And the darkness they bring.

And it makes me wonder
“What might I think when I am dying?”
What may I think on the final steps of that unstoppable march?
It is hard to answer, part of me (the darker part for certain) keeps a certainty
Of my end coming in a terrifying contemplation of blackness.
Another part of me wonders if my final thoughts will be the flashes of my life,
Whether I will regret lost loves and unjustly dead, Or rejoice in the light of my life fully and happily lived
I will only know then.

Until then, one can only fear and dread
And weep for the blackness that comes at the end,
And the thought of the world rolling, tumbling on
And only at the end realizing how we should have lived.
It is sense to be terrified at the thought.
By why think of inevitable, unstoppable things?
Why think of the end of our chapter?
Why ponder what we cannot, and should not, control?

TIME WILL PASS:

The river runs past me, and as
I watch it I wonder at its running and how, in winter it freezes, and in the spring
Melts, and how the trees blossom and drop their leaves so
Easily, only for them to come again.

While the wind and storms come and leave, and the flowers and grass wilt
In autumn and in winter,
Leaving brown crunching ground,
Letting life, for a time, sleep.

Powers of such things are beyond me
And others of my common stock, but
Some know, or at least say they do,
Still others write their songs and paint their pictures, but I am content knowing the wonder of each passing day.
