This is my first attempt at NaPoWriMo ever, so this should be interesting. Let's hope I can reach my goal and come up with some decent writing!

Here's to my first NaPoWriMo :) I finally completed all 30 poems, and I'm proud of what I was able to accomplish this month. NaPo is now over, but feel free to keep leaving comments on my thread if you want to let me know what you think about my poems!

Day 1 - mortiferous manifestations

I wonder how many times Death has come knocking on my doorstep,
waiting to be invited in,
like a dog who lies outside on the back porch mat,
asleep until its nourisher finally arrives.

I’m not afraid of what comes next,
I know of the daggers that will come to hurt me.

Day 2 - a letter to an old flame

What I thought was your love for me felt like an exoskeleton,
a safe haven from an unsympathetic world.

You always told me I looked beautiful,
even during that one time when you sat down next to me
and the toilet in my bathroom,
holding my hair up while you gave me reassurance
that everything was going to be okay.

It wasn’t.

I had so much love to give you,
but I have to admit,
I’m the last person who knows anything about
how to give my love to another human being,
much less myself.

And with this letter, I hope that you read it,
so you’ll understand why I ran
and why it would have never worked.

Oh I really like the set-up in the simile in your second poem:
What I thought was your love for me felt like an exoskeleton

^ interesting premise!

Are you planning on using the prompts for the whole month? Those can be great tools to stretch your poetry! :)

Good luck this month @mckaylaam - I look forward to seeing where your poetry goes!
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

Day 3 - self-isolation

They say April showers bring May flowers.

Lately I’ve been feeling a lot like Rapunzel,
locked away in her tower,
nothing to do but sleep for hours.

But I know that this shall pass
and soon enough I’ll once again know
what it’s like to feel the grass
underneath my toes.

Spoiler! :
@alliyah Thank you! Also I don't plan on using those prompts for the entire month, I just decided to have a look at that list since I wanted some inspiration and see if I could maybe write something in a different style from what I usually do.

So far, my favorite is your second poem. I love the message there! You know what they say: "We can't give something we don't have." From the word "unsympathetic," I knew that she had a loveless upbringing:(( aw. This poem evokes so much feelings, keep it up sis!

Also, your third poem seems to be pandemic/ quarantine-inspired haha it makes me want to write a poem about that too.
If you want some sweet reviews to your poems, short stories, and essays, come by Katteelogue.

Have a lovely day❤️

I love your latest poem, too! It reminds me of the theme of my first one, though there's definitely a different ending to it. :)

Day 4 - blue hair dye

Blue is the color of my eyes,
the windows to my soul
that let in light on the sunny days
and protect against the rain on dark stormy nights.

Blue is the color of your forever-wrinkled bedsheets
that I once knew like the back of my hand
but are now becoming as unfamiliar and unrecognizable
as you were becoming to me.

Blue is the color of the ocean,
whose tempestuous waves crashing against one another
drown out the cacophony in my mind
and give me the serenity I’ve been seeking to find.

Today I dyed my hair blue,
and I can already hear my mom crying.

Spoiler! :

@Katteex Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear that you really liked my second poem. The third poem is definitely inspired by the quarantine, I think it's something I was eventually going to have to write about this month haha.
@Jaybird Thank you! I can definitely see some similarities between the two, I think the weather where we live has been a source of inspiration for the both of us.

Your poem was beautiful, but that last line definitely was the star of the show. :P It wasn't where I was expecting it to end - and I love that surprise!

Nice twist in poem 4 - wasn't expecting that! (I'm also always going to be a fan of color-poems, because I love hearing what people associate with different colors)

Day 5 - thoughts on life and healing injuries

The bruise on my knee is starting to get better.
I know that because everyone says it happens
when it starts to turn an ugly yellow-green color.

But the thing is, I didn’t want it to go away.

I wanted it to stay,
like the faint red scars that line my arms
or the long white stretch marks that cover my stomach and thighs,
to stay as a permanent physical reminder
of how I am a survivor
and have lived almost 20 years of life.

My yellow-green bruise finally went away,
until the next day when I fell again at ballet.

Spoiler! :

@Jaybird @alliyah I'm glad you liked the last line! I originally had it at the beginning of my poem, but after I finished writing my poem, I did a lot of rearranging and felt that it fit better at the end because it created that twist/surprise :) Also @alliyah, I'm definitely a fan of color-poems as well for that same reason!

I love how you see scars and stretch marks - I have my fair share of scars on my legs from when I was younger, and I've always seen them as something to be proud of.

I also love how you almost have a rhyming scheme to your poem. It's not consistent throughout, but the lines that do rhyme - or almost rhyme - like "away" and "ballet" make the poem flow even better.

Day 6 - yellow daffodils

Your flowers finally bloomed today,
after a long season of never-ending rain
and prayers for protection
against the unrelenting birds and squirrels.

They were yellow daffodils,
perfect Narcissus plants
radiating your favorite color.

The seeds which I had sown a few months prior
fall nowhere even close to those of yours,
sown over a short 19 years of life.

Spoiler! :
@Jaybird I used to be so ashamed of my scars and stretch marks, but as I've gotten older I've learned to love them and they show me how far I've come :) Also thank you! I wanted to play with rhyming in a way where it wasn't seen in every line but there was still a little bit of it present.
