no one said
that my heart would break,
that I would never get a break,
that we would all begin to break
down, that soon we'd have an outbreak.

no one said that all of the above would happen simultaneously.

it's here; it's now. break time.

I’ve been listening to symphonies,
ever since I left (you).

I’ll soak in the
grandeur, for an hour.
so many instruments,
movements, you can’t help but
be moved yourself.

Sometimes there are just a few seconds,
a bare two measures,
a series of beats, breaths.
a certain tonal quality,
a certain change in key—
standing like
sharp silhouettes against
the symphony,
I love them more
than the whole.

And in my mind,
I will those few measures
to expand,
to fill eternity.
But they’re embedded in something
far greater, and must
fade away, diminish
under the power of the whole.
They wouldn’t be beautiful
if they didn’t
disappear.

Life’s like that, too.
I can never have more
than just those
scarce few seconds.

Before you left (me).

these lines? right here?
perfection. i've never seen anyone explain music in all its glory so wonderfully. so accurately.
this is such a beautiful poem - so full of emotion. i'm really, really looking forward to keeping up with your thread this year. really, really.

so. best of luck, Que - i'll be around ;)
I was eleven years old
and I'd lost my mother,
and my soul.
And the crucible
gave me you.

I'm just swooping in to say this bit gave me goosebumps:

And in my mind,
I will those few measures
to expand,
to fill eternity.
But they’re embedded in something
far greater, and must
fade away, diminish
under the power of the whole.
They wouldn’t be beautiful
if they didn’t
disappear.

And as a musician, all of this hit me in all the right places. <3
I make my own policies.

Thanks a bunch @hiraeth! :D Glad you liked it.
And @JabberHut I'm glad it could hit you as a musician. It's hard to substitute words for music! :)

just one thing I was wondering.
it won’t take but a moment.

one evening, late,
you called me an
angel.
I wonder now if
that was the beginning
of the end—

or had my course been set
ever since the day I first saw you
bent over that piano
playing as if the music
were your soul.

because if either of us
is an angel,
it’s you.
ten thousand times over
you’ve saved me.
and what have I done but
cut you down
cried in your arms
complicated everything?

I’m sorry.
I just have to know:

what did I do
to deserve
you?

dancing so close
is dangerous, they say

knives at each other’s
backs, hearts in our
throats, we spin.

hands clasped,
fingernails digging into soft skin;
eyes locked,
pinning each other like specimens into place;
teeth bared,
sharp as cut glass pressed against a pulsing artery.

knowing every step
to this wicked waltz,
we move in sync like
m a r i o n e t t e s.

a catch in breath,
a break in contact,
and one or the other of us will have to realize

the music’s stopped.

I miss the days when we would sleep
beneath the same hollow roof.
but the skies and stars are the
roof of all the earth, and I trust
that it’s the same for you as for me.

the heart is just an empty chamber,
a balloon waiting for someone to
breathe life into it. They say a heart
full of hope can lift up into the heavens
and sail the skies and never come down.

the crocuses are a chorus of color,
all growing things in spring reaching
up, up, up, towards the sun, and
I’m pulled, too, as the tides by the moon;
reaching helplessly, relentlessly, towards the heavens.

If I could be the Venus to your Mars
The emptiness would slowly fade away;
For wandering amongst the endless stars
Is lonesome when there’s nothing here to stay.

We watched the full moon rise above the trees
One night, before all things would fall apart.
Now I am left with only memories
Of stars and skies and, once, an aching heart.

We traced Orion in the winter skies
But now Orion’s gone, and I am, too,
For what is life but numberless goodbyes?
Two thousand miles; I think of stars, and you.

In May, they say, the planets will align;
and then, perhaps, I’ll take your hand in mine.
