Just dropping in to say I've really been enjoying these poems from a historical perspective! They're so beautiful and relateable despite being from the perspective of people living through a different time, and I love how this allows you to keep to a theme yet write poems on a variety of subjects.

13. After the fall

There is a period
After monumentous times in life
(both good and bad)
where everything seems to move in limbo
And nothing seems quite real.

The sky is clouded over
and the silence seems all consuming.

My last day at the hospital was yesterday.
I will miss the soldiers
and the stories they told
of their families
and their loves
and the day the’d soon come home.

All our dreams can come true — if we have the courage to pursue them.

14. The end of the world

It seems as though
no matter what
humans always dream of before
and I have never done the best with change.

But all I can think about now
is to not get sick.

Walter survived the war
only to succumb to this
and it was the same with
George and John and Harry
and probably countless others I do not know.

Mother’s sick now too
and I don’t know where to go
or if this is really living.

The streets are like a ghost town
barren
silent
dead

I miss what things were like before
and everything we took for granted.

All our dreams can come true — if we have the courage to pursue them.

15. Halfway

The journey to the edge
has been long and tired
and of late I’ve wondered
why I ever thought
it was a good idea
while I was carrying my son.

The pale-skinned men
do not speak of families
and yet I wonder
if there is anyone they love
anyone to return to
and relay our grand adventure.

They will be famous, certainly
and will return to their leaders
and their president will speak of them as heroes
but what I wonder is
If they have anyone they love
anyone that would let them go on such a journey.

And what of me when this is over?

We will survive
for it is the duty that I swore to
And we won’t go back until we reach the edge.
I want to,
for my son,
and so that we may all have a better life.

All our dreams can come true — if we have the courage to pursue them.

16. In the morning

The taste of an over easy egg
in my mouth this morning
Is the first thing that I have a sense of.
Coffee calms the richness in my mouth
As does the dryness of the wheat toast
I’ve placed the egg upon.

I’ve been making breakfast this way
Since I watched a girl on YouTube
make believe she was in the 1960s
for the sake of showing how people used to wake up
in the morning.

In many ways I am a woman of my time
my life a dependency on these machines
but then I listen to a Beatles song
and think maybe the world did me wrong
by putting me here and now.

All our dreams can come true — if we have the courage to pursue them.

17. Crossroads

There comes a time in every woman’s life
when they meet someone and they fall in love.
Love these days seems to only lead to strife.
From our first day, you fit me like a glove.

It was the dawn of a new day for France
when I saw you lit by the candlelight.
You looked at me and asked me for a dance
and your soft blue eyes seemed so very right.

You said I’d never have to work again
and I thought I was your one and only.
I didn’t think you were like other men.
Now your daughter and I are so lonely.

I am stuck at a crossroads, don’t you see
Wondering what sort of mother to be.

All our dreams can come true — if we have the courage to pursue them.

18. Batttlefield

The air was quiet
in the battlefield today
Where ten thousand sleep.

All our dreams can come true — if we have the courage to pursue them.

Dedicated to my grandmother, Judy.

19. Moon Song

The air was warm and still that summer night.
The radio played Fly Me To The Moon
as you and I watched under the starlight.

Constant loneliness made my chest feel tight
scarcely a year before you made me swoon.
The air was warm and still that summer night.

Once I kissed you, everything felt right.
I wondered if Neil Armstrong hummed a tune
as you and I watched under the starlight.

When I was young, I used to fly a kite
I never thought that astronauts would come so soon.
The air was warm and still that summer night.

That morning in July, the sun was bright.
We were unsure as recently as June
as you and I watched under the starlight.

Think of all the stories we all write;
Millions like us, watching since afternoon.
The air was warm and still that summer night.
As you and I watched underneath the starlight.

All our dreams can come true — if we have the courage to pursue them.

I really liked the last poem Elinor, I think it's one of my favorites of your's (I've been reading along, though haven't had a chance to comment yet, I really like the theme you've got because I think it brings an extra level of depth to your poetry, especially the little historical nuggets you're able to work in). I especially liked the first poem in your thread with Lincoln, and "Halfway".

This poem has pretty good flow, the rhymes don't sound forced (sometimes villanelles end up having a few struggle lines at the end in my experience) I think it feels warm and kind of whimsical, the mood is like comfortable-love. I'm really curious about what the line "we were unsure as recently as June" is referencing, but I like the whole idea of watching the first astronauts and that just being totally new, and yet here we still are on earth. :) Looking forward to the rest of your poems!
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

20. All Our Yesterdays

It seemed like only yesterday
That we were happy.
And didn’t have to worry
about our next meal.

New decades have
always brought promise
in the past
There was no reason to think
this would be any different.

But it’s 1930 now
and I wish we could go back
to 1929.

All our dreams can come true — if we have the courage to pursue them.

21. Midnight Voyage

It is nearly midnight
on this vessel
and I haven’t slept a wink.
We are days from New York Harbor now
and I haven’t given much thought
to what I will do once I am there.
I am alone;
Mother spent the last of her money
to buy me a one way ticket.
She thought I still had a chance.

It’s been wonderful so far,
as it’s not every day one gets to travel on the
grandest ship in the world—
even in third class.

But wait,
something is wrong.
I do not hear the engines anymore.

The next two hours
are something I wish to keep for myself.
I somehow made it on a boat
in the bitter cold
And I did not look back
At the ship that had carried me so far.
Not everyone was so lucky.

All I know is that when we got to to New York
And I saw the statue I’d spent so long dreaming about
I finally started crying
Because there were so many non that ship like me
who will never get to see it.

I can’t let them have died for nothing.

All our dreams can come true — if we have the courage to pursue them.

22. Ice Cream Cake and Candy

Ten years ago I used to listen
to Lesley Gore sing about
the only thing that mattered
to my thirteen year old self.
Connie Francis too would tell me
when I got to be a certain age
Boys would want me too.

It seems these days
It was all a lie.
I wish I could go back
to being thirteen
To feel that innocence
and hope again.

All our dreams can come true — if we have the courage to pursue them.

23. New York

There is a rumor
down in New York City that
it is not the same.
