omg omg thank you all!

11.
Apollo, I know June is marathon month.
I know your training regiment;
it’s on my fridge, over my desk, and somewhere in my phone.
And if I want more detail, the whole thing is on the internet.
Scientists spent centuries calculating your precise routes,
your start, your zenith, and your end.
The whole world knows your schedule,
and I am well aware that chaos would reign should you change it,
but could you please move the heavens
so I can take a nap at three?
"I've got dreams like you--no really!--just much less, touchy-feeley.
They mainly happen somewhere warm and sunny
on an island that I own, tanned and rested and alone
surrounded by enormous piles of money." -Flynn Rider, Tangled

12. Sunday Sonnet No. 2
Uncertainty is my new middle name.
It sits, a child in tantrum, on my tongue.
My roommate, cryptic girl, says ‘watch your lungs,’
but ne’er explains the rules of this new game.
By text, ‘I’m diagnosed!’ does she proclaim,
and I, by splinters of my rage am stung,
for news is never given. I get swung
about by words that hardly form a frame.

Is it so wrong of me to want to know?
To comprehend the mess that she is in?
Without the picture, painting, photograph,
I cannot plan, can’t walk through this tableau.
But fine! Just send the crumbs left in the tin.
‘She told me naught’ will be my epitaph.
"I've got dreams like you--no really!--just much less, touchy-feeley.
They mainly happen somewhere warm and sunny
on an island that I own, tanned and rested and alone
surrounded by enormous piles of money." -Flynn Rider, Tangled

Like the sun is starved,
new spring heat eats my vigor
leaving me dried out.

14.
She smells my blood.

The sharp shard of a shell slices my sole,
and red seeps into the sand,
spills into the sea.

The salt stings
in my cut, in my eyes,
and an ache anchors me.
Every old laceration bleeds again.

The sea sings,
sweet music in the swish of waves:
a siren song, a spring freeze.
I freeze.

Her shark fin circles
in the soft, red sea.
"I've got dreams like you--no really!--just much less, touchy-feeley.
They mainly happen somewhere warm and sunny
on an island that I own, tanned and rested and alone
surrounded by enormous piles of money." -Flynn Rider, Tangled

15.
The grass threads through my toes,
and the wind combs my hair.
Spring’s great hunting horn
summons me outdoors,
where I belch.

That’s nature y’all.

16.
How does confidence grow?
Does it grow like a maple,
steady, sturdy, slow, and strong,
or like a douglas fir,
fast, hard, straight as an arrow?
Does it wind like a vine,
tenacious and hungry,
or bloom like a flower,
with vivid petals and delicate veins?

Maybe it used to,
but the concrete jungle is grown from steel,
from concrete roots and glass leaves.
Through my hard, transparent canopy,
I see how unkind it is
to plants.

17.
How nice it must be to indulge
in sunny afternoon naps,
the scintillating scritch of grass,
the soft comfort of a firm hand,
a body with warm, close pressure.
Would that I could stretch,
luxuriate on the carpet,
and curl up as a cat.

18.
Oh, the joy of a breath well spent!
An exclamation, an exhalation,
My mouth on metal, air rushes out,
and the bell of my horn resounds so loud,
that all the block’s dogs join me to shout
a shared call of joy to the heavens, no doubt.

19. Sunday Sonnet No. 3 - an Ode to my Hometown, Plutopia
Nostalgia paints a perfect picture here
of pleasant play beneath a pristine sky,
but as pale ice cream lightens up root beer,
my mem’ry turns the darkness from my eye.

Back then, I pranced upon the asphalt streets,
a charming ribbon curling through my hair.
The photographic haze of age made sweet
the radiative taint of honeyed air.

Past cookie cutter houses I once biked,
past repetitions of the nuclear dream.
Here, isotopes and retro life alike,
live on forever, somehow in esteem.

The horrors wrought here ne’er will fade away,
but I ignore them for my childhood days.
"I've got dreams like you--no really!--just much less, touchy-feeley.
They mainly happen somewhere warm and sunny
on an island that I own, tanned and rested and alone
surrounded by enormous piles of money." -Flynn Rider, Tangled

Brevity
is it.

21.
Collegiate rowers row on beat,
steady, ready,
all in sync.

I pushed off the gravel shore
paddling faster
than ‘ere before.

And now, never will I meet,
my deadlines.
Red lines
will my papers greet.

22.
My body is brass—
brash, strong
—shaped of crass metals,
leaving fly ash.

My shield is nickel,
my skin is tin,
and roiling oils
tickle the fickle
parts and pieces within.

Crude and rude—
this body mine,
but I breathe, and the breath,
the silver song,
makes silver the horn.
My silver skin shimmers;
life makes me divine.

23.
I bought new shoes—
black, black boots,
roomy in the toes,
with knit ribbing,
quilted leather,
shiny, silver, zippers,
and black, black souls soles.
