If it comes to me, I'll make it sound profound.

The Lover's Tax

there's only one way
to make up for your mistakes,
your faults and your failures,
for holding your special one back:
uplifting her,
cherishing her,
spoiling her with the world--
rose bouquet of
reds, pinks, whites, and
a center yellow king;
European chocolates
made of the finest recipes
passed between family
a handwritten poem,
an odyssey of your time
with your one and only,
memories rapidly refreshed
at the flick of a pen;
a chocolate Labrador puppy
squirming in your arms,
nipping at the floral arrangement
tickling his nose--
all to see her smile once again.

but when your treasure,
your queen,
maintains her own personal space,
accepts your gifts with a familiar grace,
slams the hickory door in your face,
perhaps the mistress
three nights ago
simply wasn't worth the lover's tax.
I make my own policies.

Faith Says

man up, pride says.
don't bother other people
dealing with their own pain.

i cry for help,
but i don't say a word.
yet i feel broken,
cracks growing deeper
as the days go by,
eating away the pieces
of my spine, bones
grinding each other
with every turn,
every twist,
every breath.
walk it off, pride says,
yet walking jostles
the joints, lamenting the
days of trophies and victories,
nerves screaming
an agony only the brain
can instinctively sense.
is life worth living
when all i can feel
is pain?

sleep it off, pride says.
tomorrow brings opportunity,
no matter the pain
yet my brain can't relax,
thoughts whirring around
like swirling mental bees.
what if i can never heal?
how could i have let this happen
when my future was so bright?
drown it out, pride says.
but everything is simply
a reminder, a memory
of the pain
i constantly feel,
helpless and afraid,
defeated by
nature's complexities.

waste away, pride says.
don't show weakness--

ignore your pride, faith says,
the pain is yours because
only you can endure it.
listen to your pain.
learn from its history.
appreciate its scars.
pain will always be there,
but strength shall
always prevail.
I make my own policies.

What If He Missed?

I see the way you look at him,
how he's captured your heart
with the way his crosshair
glides over the target,
how his trigger finger
fluidly reacts without fail
at the sight of the enemy --
shoot on sight, you say,
get the picks!
click the heads!
yes, I see that look in your eyes,
the hungry desire for the star,
the secret weapon,
the clutch victory
won at the click of a button,
the swift reaction of youth
taking home the radiant
championship trophy
amidst confetti and cheers,
praises and music,
money and fame.
but what if,
for one spectacularly
crucial moment,
he missed?
I make my own policies.

Ball of Yarn

It wasn't until I heard your voice
when the memories came flooding back,
the emotions jumbled up in a
ball of colored yarn,
passionate reds entwined with sorrowful indigos,
the cheery lemon yellow buried beneath
lavender's comforting warmth.
How I've missed hearing the
colorful hues painting the
tenor notes in my ear,
a worn-out canvas with aging edges and
paling colors fading in the artificial light
suddenly seeing the post-rain sun
for the first time in years.

You undid the knots in my stomach,
massaged the strands from their confines,
promising me we were okay,
assuring me we were alive,
we were well,
shades of hope arranged in a
masterful mural of a perfected craft
vowing a future where the colors
were finally arranged
according to the beholder's heart
because we were okay.
We were okay.
I make my own policies.

The one and the only jabbering hut
tried to write many a gibberish-drut.
She did diddly-doos
and wham-wiggly-woos,
'til April had fled from her babbling butt.

"The fact is, I don't know where my ideas come from. Nor does any writer. The only real answer is to drink way too much coffee and buy yourself a desk that doesn't collapse when you beat your head against it." --Douglas Adams

Why should Caesar just get to stomp around like a giant while the rest of us try not to get smushed under his big feet? Brutus is just as cute as Caesar, right? Brutus is just as smart as Caesar, people totally like Brutus just as much as they like Caesar, and when did it become okay for one person to be the boss of everybody because that's not what Rome is about! We should totally just stab Caesar!
— Gretchen Wieners
