drowning and breathing are more similar
than you'd think
but drowning is easier
there's an art of effortless
in allowing the water to fill my lungs,
a deadly comfort in the weight
that displaces the emptiness

but remembering to breathe
in and out, in and out, in and out
inandoutinandoutinandout every
moment gets harder, and my lungs
are tired of the effort of emptying
and e x p a n d i n g in this tedious game

my lungs will capsize in this tsunami but
choking on water is easier than choking on air
all I have to do is let the water in,
no resistance required

@TheBlueCat Thanks so much, Blue! I really appreciate you and your thoughtfulness in each of your likes, comments, and for taking the time to read/comment. And thanks so much for the compliment on my writing style. Though I've technically complete with NaPo, I'll still be posting poems until the end. Aiming for 40.

I wanted to be the final puzzle piece
that fit you perfectly but your edges
grated against mine, like tectonic plates
scraping against each other, and I'm
more jagged than ever, too broken
to complete the puzzle

each second accumulates
grain of sand over grain of sand
as seconds turn to minutes,
to hours, to days
each grain piling up until
the mole hill is a mountain
I have to climb

breathing should be easy,
automatic, but it becomes
hard when every second
ticks by, every breath
that forces its way down
my paper lungs, implodes
in my chest, thin and insipid,
like I'm standing on a mountain,
alone,
as I breathe in my first taste of air
without you in it

for too long
i've watched people
walk out of my life
the suddenness of their entrance
and e x i t leaving my heart
swinging like a revolving door
on rusted hinges, and the effort
of swinging between o p e n
and closed has left me dizzy

there are ligature marks
on my lungs from being
shackled for too long,
and now the tension
that encircled my chest
for two years is gone,
my lungs can rexpand,
reveling in the hollow nothingness
and my chest is an empty
cave where my heartbeat
echoes a song I can finally hear

after suffocating for so long,
lungs polluted with carbon dioxide,
i can breathe out the poison
and breathe in new air

the moment my lungs deflate,
the hollowness is more than relief
it is a blessing after choking on the weight
of stale, insipid air for so long

my lungs are still fragile,
the tissue tentative to expand
after beng restricted for so long,
but there is freedom in healing
and learning to release
in order to receive
fresh air

sometimes i crumple too easily
as the column of vertebrae in my spine
folds in on itself like an accordion
even the most durable paper
