The sun was bright over the Soul Society. Asuka blinked as she emerged from the Squad 13 barracks. Her first day as Lieutenant of the Squad.

How long had it been since Captain Ukitake had had and actual Lieutenant? Ever since Kaien died, Asuka believed, and since then it had been Sentaro and Kiyone fighting over who was more loyal to the Captain. They were going to be mad at her for a while. She'd gone from 4th seat to Lieutenant in less than a day, thanks to Captain Kyoraku dropping in on her training.

Asuka grumbled as she remembered it. She'd been certain she was far enough from the Seireitei to avoid anyone, even High Captain Yamamoto, sensing her spiritual pressure. But who had decided to take a midnight walk near her training area? Captain Ukitake's closest friend. She'd woken up the next morning to a promotion offer.

She could've turned it down, but what was the point now that the captain knew? The cat was out of the bag, so she'd accepted. That would just let her train a little harder in the daylight.

Why though, would she hide her true abilities? Because all the crap she'd had to deal with at the Academy. All the 'prodigy' talk and praise she got for being so skilled and not hiding the fact. The popularity hadn't been what she'd imagined it to be, so she stopped the public show of power and started really training in secret.

Life had been peaceful after the excitement over her had died down, but now she had to deal with the hubbub that got kicked up from this promotion.

But Asuka wasn't going to lie to herself, she was happier than ever to serve as the Lieutenant of Captain Ukitake, and she felt honored that he'd given her the promotion after the squad had gone so many years without a lieutenant.

Asuka turned and headed toward her Captain's office. She was curious to find out what her first day on the job was going to be like.

**I tried not to babble too much. lol. If you find anything confusing or iffy, let me know. =)**

Being lieutenant of Squad 3 was strange, as of late. Captain Gin was acting strange, well, stranger than usual. It seemed as though he was too busy even for his own lieutenant. Miharu rarely saw him these days, and it bothered her. As lieutenant, you are almost always at your captain's side. What was going on with him? She had not been in this position for long, but she could tell when something was...different.

All she could do was wait. Waiting wasn't her favorite thing to do, but she had no choice. The captain would find her when she was needed. As for now, she was taking her daily stroll through the Seireitei to calm her mind. Not many people bothered her, because she was much like her captain in a way that she was stern. Many people often avoided her.

Miharu could feel the different spiritual energies of the soul reapers around her, but there was one that was stood out. It was very powerful, and someone was trying to mask it. Thankfully, Miharu had a keen eye for spiritual energy and it's power. This must be Asuka's power. Lately, she had been promoted to lieutenant, and everyone around her had discussed it at least once. Miharu was not one for social gossip, but she heard about every where she went. Now, Asuka was close by, and most likely training in secret to avoid the chaos around them.

The Captain had given Asuka a few stacks of paperwork to do, but Asuka couldn't concentrate on the small print with the sun shining like it was. She decided to take a walk, instead. She wound her way through the labyrinth that made up the outer part of the Seireitei.

"Asuka Fujimoto." She heard someone say. She looked over to see the Lieutenant of Squad 3 perched on a rooftop.

"Hello, Miharu. What brings you here? You're usually off doing something this time of day."

Miharu sighed and looked to the side, thinking about what had her sitting here instead of at her captain's side.

"Yes, but... Well, the captain seems to be busy lately. Busy enough that he rarely even needs his own lieutenant." There was a slight sadness in her voice, because there wasn't a single lieutenant out there that didn't want to make their captain happy.

"Busy?" Asuka asked, "Captain Gin always has that way of... Intimidating people just from a single look. Are you sure he isn't hiding something, Miharu?"

"No, I'm not, Asuka." She stepped off the roof to land right in front of Asuka, "And that is what bothers me. What could it be that he couldn't even tell his own lieutenant?" She turned away from Asuka and headed back into the seireitei, Asuka following maybe two or three steps behind.

"Perhaps he is just busy, Miharu." They continued walking, mostly in silence now.

It was hard seeing Miharu like this. She could almost sympathize with her in the fact that it was difficult to be left in the dark by your captain, and know it. Every lieutenant wanted to serve they're captain, and it was understood that Captains have their own agendas, too, but for a lieutenant to see their captain troubled and be unable to help is torture. Asuka couldn't imagine being in that situation.

The pair found themselves ascending the stairs to the central part of the Sereitei. They were only half way up the stairs when the clacking sound of the alarm exploded through the air, followed by a male voice.

"Attention! Red alert, red alert! Intruders detected in West Rukon! This is not a drill! Repeat, breack detected in West Rukon!"

Asuka looked at Miharu. "Intruders?"

"We need to assemble our squads and report to the Hakuto Gate immediately." Miharu said.

Asuka nodded and flash stepped to where her squad was already congregating.

"Alright, let's get to the Hakuto Gate. She said, leading them to the westernmost edge of the Seireitei.

Miharu flash stepped to her squad, who was awaiting orders. They saw her and immediately readied themselves for battle. Miharu looked at them, and they instantly knew to follow. The quickly made their way to the outer wall and the Hakuto Gate.

Captain! She felt a moment of relief as she realized he was already here, and fighting the intruders! The squad instinctively moved forward to defend the captain, but was stopped by Miharu. They gave her a questioning look.

"Lieutenant! We can't just stand here!" The squad was getting antsy just standing there.

"Do you not think the captain can handle this simple intruder? He does not need our help." Miharu gripped her zanpakto. She too couldn't stand not defending her captain, but she knew how he felt.

What? What is the captain doing? The captain had blown the intruder back outside of the gate, but did not destroy him. What is he thinking? The Hakuto Gate closed and barricaded the intruders from them.

Asuka watched as Gin knocked the Ryouka back, then aimed his attack at Jidanbo, forcing him to drop the gate he had open. It was hard to watch him attack another Soul Reaper, but Jidanbo had opened the gate for the intruders, so Asuka kept on a calm face as the gate crashed to the ground locking the intruders out.

"Lieutenant? Where is Captain Ukitake?" A voice asked from behind her.

Asuka looked over her shoulder to see the Squad's 3rd and 4th Seats standing just behind her. She turned to them, they had fought for the spot of lieutenant, trying desperately to prove their love and loyalty to the captain. Asuka felt kinda bad for taking the spot from them, but her promotion was saving the Captain from alot of headaches the two's bickering brought. "He isn't feeling well, and I don't think these Ryouka are truly worth bothering him about." She looked to the rest of them. "Alright I want seats eight through twenty to stay hereas a precaution. If need be, seats three through nine will replace you on my order, though I expect we'll have this mess cleaned up by midday. Understood?"

"Yes, Lieutenant." The group responded. Half of the Squad headed off to return to what they were doing beforehand as the other half settled in for guard duty.

As she turned to walk away, a Hell Butterfly fluttered into view, awaiting a perch. Asuka lifted her hand and the butterfly landed on her finger.

It conveyed it's message and took to the air again. Asuka frowned. There was a Lieutenant Meeting being held immediately. No chance of talking to the Captain just yet. Asuka sighed and headed back to the centermost part of the Seireitei.

Miharu walked in silence beside Asuka after the hell butterfly delivered it's message. She was really bothered at the moment, and didn't know what to say.

"Miharu?" Asuka looked at her, "What bothers you so much that you force me to endure this walk in such menacing silence?"

Miharu sighed, as if it was the only thing she knew how to do. "Captain Gin... He just let that Ryouka go. It's not like him at all."

Asuka thought for a moment, then replied "I don't know much about him, but I do see your point. He should have captured the Ryouka and took him to Head Captain."

"Yes... Maybe that is why we've been summoned for a meeting. What do you think these Ryouka want?" Miharu was quite thoughtful, but she could not fathom why a Ryouka would break into the Seireitei and challenge the Court Guard Captains. The two of them turned the corner and entered the meeting room, joining the other lieutenants.

There weren't many lieutenants in the meeting when Asuka and Miharu got there.

"Hey, Asuka!" Momo, of Squad 5 called when the pair entered the meeting room. "I haven't seen you in some time. How have you been?"

Asuka had been a classmates with Momo back in the Academy, up until her early graduation. "I'm good Momo, thanks for asking. Where are the other Lieutenants?"

"They're scattered around the Seireitei." Rangiku replied.

"We're not very organized, are we?" Miharu commented. Asuka shook her head in agreement, the way this all was going was almost at the point of being chaotic.

It took what seemed like hours for the other lieutenants to show up, and the news they brought was growing more and more unbelievable. The report of the Ryouka breaking through the membrane that protected the Seireitei was the hardest to believe. It was believed to be and impossible feat, but apparently the Ryouka had managed it somehow and were on the loose inside the Seireitei.

The door opened and Renji Abarai walked in.

"Good morning, Renji." Momo said is her usual soft voice.

"Hm? Oh, hey, Momo." He said looking down at her. She was nearly half his size.

"Well, look who's here." Asuka said, crossing her arms.

Renji looked up and blinked once. "Asuka?"

"The one and only." Asuka smiled.

"What are you- Oh that's right, you got promoted; I heard about that."

Asuka's smile vanished. "Yeah, who hasn't."

Just then, the rest of the lieutenants showed up, and Isane of Squad 4 cleared his throat and began reporting on the latest occurrences of the Ryouka. Asuka was shock to hear that almost all of Squad 11 had been defeated. Then to hear that two of the intruders had taken a member of Squad 4 hostage.

"It was last reported that this pair of Ryouka was seen heading this way. However, the current position of these two is currently unknown." Isane finished.

That's when the other lieutenants began asking questions. Asuka had her own questions, but before she could ask, a light tug on her sleeve made her look back.

"Asuka," Momo whispered, "Renji's disappeared."

Asuka looked to the doorway to see it swinging closed. She then looked at Miharu, who had noticed and turned to listen. Miharu nodded and Asuka turned back to Momo. "Stay here and get the rest of the reports. We'll meet up with you afterwards, if we don't find him before then. Momo nodded and watched as the two women slid out the door.

**Sorry, it's kinda long. Hee hee. You know I HAD to get Renji in at some point! =P**

Miharu and Asuka were running, but not using their flash step, "Where do you think Renji ran off to? Wherever it is, it can't be good." Miharu asked Asuka as they turned the corner.

"I'm not sure... You don't think he's going to try to save Rukia, do you?"

Miharu stopped suddenly, startling Asuka. "Asuka, we must get to him before the captains do. They'll kill him if he tries to cross them. What is he thinking?" A group of soul reapers went running past them, almost knocking them down.

"Sorry lieutenants!" One of them called to them.

There was a powerful shift in spiritual pressure, and the two of them looked around.

"That was too strong to be Renji..." Asuka shifted her gaze around the Seireitei.

"Well, let's go." Miharu flash stepped towards the spiritual energy, with Asuka right beside her.

Asuka and Miharu moved quickly. They came to the steps that led to the outer part of the Seireitei and descended, feeling Renji's and what had to be a Ryouka's spirit energy mingling somewhere near the bottom. They appeared at the very edge of the battle, the ground littered with blood and debris. On the other side of the battle were another Ryouka and what appeared to be the captive Squad 4 member.

Asuka caught sight of Renji as he and the Ryouka dueled each other. He had the upper hand, since the Ryouka was in far worse shape than Renji was.

"I think he has this under control." Miharu said, taking on a calmer pose. Asuka nodded and removed her hand from the hilt of her zanpakuto.

But suddenly, the tides turned and a brilliant blaze hit Renji dead on. Asuka watched as he was knocked through the air, landing hard on an upturned piece of stone. He coughed up blood and collapsed.

"Renji!" Asuka cried. She rushed forward just as the Ryouka collapsed across the way. She could hear Miharu's steps right behind her and she fell to her knees next to Renji. His wounds were deep, but a medical team could save him. "Miharu, could you call for a medical squad."

Miharu paused for a moment, as though she were listening for something. "There's already a team on it's way."

Asuka nodded, feeling the light traces of spritual pressure moving towards them. She turned and looked at where the Ryouka lay. The captive Squad 4 member, who Auksa could tell wasn't being held against his will, and the second Ryouka were bent over their fallen comrade. She sighed and turned to Miharu. "We should let them go."

Miharu frowned. "You're joking."

"No, I'm not." She nodded toward the trio across from them. "They have a reason to be here. I don't know what, but something is telling me it's nothing to do with attacking the Soul Society."

Miharu thought for a second. "I've had the exact same feeling, but if this gets discovered, we'll be in more trouble than we can imagine."

"I know." Asuka stood. "Hey, Ryouka!" The second ryouka and the member of Squad 4 looked up suddenly, worry lining their faces as they caught sight of the badges on Miharu and Asuka's arms. "You two need to hurry and get out of here."

"What?" The second Ryouka said, eyes wide in disbelief.

"Get your friend and get out of here." Miharu said.

"Come on, Ganju. There are more coming." he Squad 4 member said urgently.

"Right." The two lifted their friend and hurried off, disappearing through a trapdoor nearby. The Ryouka named Ganju glanced back at the two lieutenants, distrust and questions in his eyes.

"Let's flash step back and act like we just showed up." Asuka suggested.

"If we're lucky, no one will have noticed our spiritual pressure." The pair disappeared, moving to a place halfway up the stairs. And waited until they were sure the medical team had arrived before returneing to the battleground.

**You can just skip ahead to Momo finding Aizen's body. You don't have to mention what we did after the fight. You can probably mention Renji's treatment/arrest. But it's whatever, though.**

Miharu flash stepped to Asuka's room. After discovering the Ryouka and Renji, the two of them went back to their rooms. Now, Miharu was tense and edgy.

"Asuka!" She practically barged into the room without knocking. "Come with me, there's been a murder." Before Asuka could ask questions, Miharu ran back to scene, Asuka right behind her. She could hear Asuka's shock as she saw Captain Aizen's bloody body pinned to the wall. It was a shock to everyone to see a Captain dead.

Many others were standing there as well, shock and suspicion on their faces. "Miharu... How did this happen?"

"We don't know yet, Lieutenant." Captain Gin answered her question, that terrible, haunting look on his face. "Right, Miharu?"

"Yes, Captain." She could barely look at him. Had he done this? He was acting strange lately, and then....this? No, she wouldn't believe it.

Asuka narrowed her eyes at the Squad 3 Captain. It wasn't unusual to see a smile on his face, but at the scene of this kind of murder, it was just wrong.

"Captain, I-" Asuka started, but a scream of rage covered her words.

"IT WAS YOU!!!" Asuka turned to see Momo, the lieutenant of the dead captain, racing toward Captain Gin, zanpakuto drawn and vengeance in her eyes.

"Momo, no!" Asuka danced out of the blade's path but swooped her arm down, wrapping it around the angered lieutenant's stomach as her other hand clasped around the girl's thin wrists. Miharu had already gotten between the captain and Momo, zanpakuto drawn.

Momo fought against her captor, as Rangiku and Iba, lieutenant of Squad 7, came forward to help hold her.

"Momo calm down!" Rangiku grunted, and Momo fell still, but Asuka kept her hold on her, unconviced.

"Momo?" She asked quietly as the other lieutenants' grips loosened slightly. Momo tensed, and then let loose a kido that threw off her holders. Momo rushed forward again and swung her blade at Gin, but Miharu moved and blocked the attack.

"Stop it Momo!" Miharu said, forcing the girl back.

"Miharu, step aside!" Momo yelled.

"I can't do that."

Asuka stood up, just as Captain Gin chuckled and walked away. She watched him as he left, that grin still on his face.

Momo tried to dart past Miharu, but Miharu keeps pace with her. "Step aside, Miharu!" Momo screamed, eyes blazing as she watched the Captain leaving at a leisurely walk. Her fiery gaze turns to Miharu. "I can't let him leave!" Momo dashed forward, letting loose her zanpakuto's shikai.

"Momo!" Asuka flashstepped forward, drawing her zanpakuto and stopping Momo's blade before it could release the attack. She then leapt back to stand next to Miharu.

"He killed Captain Aizan!" Momo cried.

"You don't know that, Momo! You have no proof!" Asuka retorted. "And now you're releasing your zanpakuto in public? Get a hold of yourself!"

Momo merely shook her head and screamed. She swung her zanpakuto and let off another attack, but the attack is blocked midway.

"Toshirou." Momo gasped.

The relationship between Toushirou and Momo had always been very clear, even though they weren't even in the same squad.

"Toushirou." Momo was shocked, and the hurt was very obvious in her eyes, but so was the anger. She raised her sword at Toushirou, but he knocked her out before she could hit him. This had to be difficult for both of them, but Captain Hitsugaya knew that it needed to end.

"Captain, would you like us to take her to the medical squad?" Miharu asked respectfully and quietly, as not to anger him.

"Put her in a cell and have the medical squad come to her. I will be there before she wakes up. She will try to go after your captain again, but we cannot allow that." He turned to look at Miharu, "You of all people should know how Gin is, and that he's been acting suspiciously. Go now, Rangiku and I will follow him."

"Yes sir." Miharu nodded to Asuka, who already had Momo in her arms, "Let's go Asuka."

Asuka and Miharu did as they were asked and left Captain Hitsugaya and Rangiku behind. They emerged outside and Asuka rubbed the side of her face, suddenly tired.

"This is turning out to be a very long day." She mumbled into her hand. She blinked, then. She'd spent these past few days with Miharu. They hadn't been very close before, but now that they'd had time to actually get to know one another, it was easy being together. The pair had been so busy, and had unconsciously stuck together. Heck, they'd been so busy that Asuka hadn't even gotten to see the Cap- "Oh crap!" Asuka took off for the Squad 13 section of the Seireitei.

"Asuka! Where are you going?" Miharu said, hurrying to catch up with Asuka.

"I haven't reported to my Captain what's been going on!" She heard Miharu choke on a laugh. "You be quiet! You wouldn't have been able to report to your Captain if he had been ill."

Miharu was still smiling as she considered it. "True. My captain found out everything himself."

"See?" Asuka flashstepped, Miharu keeping up with her.

They reached Captain Ukitake's personal quarters and Asuka knelt by the door. "Captain?"

There was a cough from inside, and a rustling as the Captain sat up. "Yes, come in." Asuka slid open the door and stood to walk in, Miharu remaining just outside. "Ah, Asuka, what is it?" The Captain seemed tired as he sat on his bed roll. She knelt in front of him, both feet tucked under her.

Asuka bowed her head as she spoke. "Forgive my tardiness of reporting this to you, but there's a situation in the Serireitei."

Asuka explained everything that was going on, all the way up to Aizan's murder.

"Impossible!" The Captain exclaimed. "Do they have any idea who the murderer is?"

Asuka shook her head. "Not at the present. Their examining the crime scene, but they don't have any solid evidence just yet."

"Very well. Thank you, Asuka. You may go."

"Yes, sir." Asuka stood and left. Closing the door, she and Miharu walked down the path that led back to the Squad 13 gate. "He's up to something." She said suddenly.

"Hm? What do you mean?" Miharu asked, looking at her.

"I may be new to the lieutenant postion, but I've known the Captain for years. He started planning something as soon as I finished explaining the Ryouka situation."

"Are you sure?"

"You can tell when your captain's up to something, and so can I. I hadn't been thinking to hard about things with all the chaos, but Rukia is my Squadmate, and we were good friends at the Academy. I just can't see her doing anything to deserve such a harsh punishment."

"It does seem a little harsh, but Central 46 gave the sentence. It's final." Miharu said.

"It just doesn't sit well with me to let Rukia die for her crimes. They weren't serious enough to require a death sentence." Asuka sighed. "Well, we should-"

A sudden rush of spiritual pressure shocked Asuka.

"Who the-?" Miharu said.

"That's Captain Zaraki's pressure!" Asuka gasped.

"It's enormous!" Miharu said. "What do you think he's doing?"

"The Ryouka can't be dumb enough to face him." Asuka said. But sure enough, she feels the same spiritual pressure that was against Renji earlier.

"Apparently, he is." Miharu says.

"Well, on any other occasion, I'd say that this would be over quickly, but to have Zaraki using this much spiritual pressure, and for that Ryouka to have that much of his own, I can only say, I wish i could see that match." Asuka smirked.

"No kidding." Miharu agreed. "But we need to start looking for those other Ryouka. I heard the two of them took out Jidanbo's brother, the Wind Scythe, without a single drop of blood spilt on their part."

"Where'd you hear that?"

"At the meeting, Iba was commenting on it."

"Missed that." Asuka said as the pair started forward. She closed her eyes and reached out for any strange spiritual pressures, it was difficult with Captain Zaraki's so thick in the air. "Damn, I can't find the other Ryouka's spirit pressures."

"Neither can I." Miharu noted.

"What do we do now?" Asuka asked. She looked up at the sky. "I realy don't feel like running routes looking for Ryouka, do you?"

"Not really."

"Hmm." Asuka put her fingers on her chin. "Well, then, let's go watch some fireworks."

"What?" Miharu looked at Asuka like she was worried she'd lost her mind. Which, with what she was suggesting wasn't a bad thought.

"I want to see Zaraki and the Ryouka go at it. We haven't seen any real action, yet. We caught the tail end of Renji's fight, and this Ryouka's turning out to be quite the fighter."

"I think you're nuts."

"Yeah, I get that alot." Asuka joked. "C'mon or we'll miss it!" She flashstepped back to the center of the Seireitei.
