She hated it and wanted to be on her own, so she escaped at age 10. She hitchhiked around Brazil, trying to earn money by doing odd jobs. Nia eventually came to a village called El Siena and was taken in by an old woman named Leonor Avilla who cared for her. She worked with the farmers in the village until a man came to sight-see. He listened to the old woman's tales of cursed gold hidden in the forest, and that everyone who tried to find it never came back. The man said he needed that gold, and tried to recruit someone from the village to go find it. Nia volunteered. Other: Nia has a pet parrot called Colorida who can imitate anything she hears perfectly.
Nia ducked her head under a branch, splashing through mud puddles in the Amazon. She spared a glance at the map Leonor had given her and changed her direction by a few feet. She stopped and took a drink from her bottle.
