Aleth laughed good-naturedly, forcing his posture to stay nonchalant. “I’m not a very interesting person, but I’ve nothing to hide… haven’t quite gotten a reading on how he feels about me, honestly.”

"He probably isn't sure, either." Emery examined his fingernails. "Lord Gaius is a methodical man. He'll do a lot of thinking before he makes up his mind about something."

“I see,” Aleth said. He buried his hands in his pockets. “Well, I suppose that bodes well for me, then. That I at least have a chance to prove myself.”

"Everybody's got a chance here." Emery tossed his ball of chain again. "Now then, where may I accompany you to?"

“I was just wandering, honestly.” Aleth watched Emery’s hands. “Feel a bit restless, now that I’ve been brought off the brink of death. Do you have any recommendations?”

"Well, a drink is always a good place to start. Or the library. I trust you've been there already?"

“I… think I am to avoid the kitchens,” Aleth answered carefully. “But the library would be nice. I was quite ill the last time I was there.”

"Let's go there, then." Emery set off in the direction of the stairs, making sure he kept a slow enough pace not to leave Aleth behind. "Can you read, Al?"

(Ugh I can’t find what we decided so imma make something up lol)
“Not well. I was primarily charged with number keeping for my master, not reading anything.”

(I think that's right. Don't worry too too much about details that we've been over before.)
"Ah, an accountant! I never could wrap my head around math. Very impressive. Perhaps you could coach me?"

“Ah, maybe!” Aleth answered with a grin. It seemed every aspect of his alibi was going to be tested before this assignment was up. He wasn’t particularly good with numbers, but well enough he’d be able to manage. “Do you know how to read? Perhaps we could tutor each other, since it seems we’ll have much time together.”

"I'm quite adept now, yes. I'd be happy to help out!" Emery started up the stairs. "We'll get something good out of this supervision, mark my words!

This was going to turn into a constant test of his story. And he hoped it would hold water.
“Truly ideal,” Aleth agreed. “Do you have a favorite book?”

"Not particularly." Emery shrugged. "I do like the accounts and diaries they keep in there, though. There are more interesting stories in there than most fiction."

“Like, personal diaries of Ashes past?” Aleth asked. It seemed too good to be true.
