You absolutely can put banners in. There are basically no restrictions to what you can do in your own thread so long as you abide by the site rules.

@elysian - when you go to edit the first post of your thread, you should see a thing that says "Topic Tag" with a drop-down menu above the title of the thread. Click on that, and you'll see all the tags available. ;)
