On Saturday, August 13, 2016, the YWS Server will be beginning its migration from its current habitat of DigitalOcean to a new habitat located in Linode. This majestic journey is a unique and beautiful thing. Using programmable cues, the server will use a combination of electric and digital circuits to complete its voyage over a period of days, seeking out lusher, more verdant fields at its new home.

Common Questions

Will YWS Be Down During This Time?
There may be a brief period of downtime (no more than an hour), and if that is the case, it'll be announced well beforehand and happen during the quiet hours. However, YWS should remain completely functional during the entirety of the migration. It's very possible that no one will notice anything at all.

Why Migrate?
This server migration is being completed for two reasons. First, the database for the server needs more memory. One option to resolve that is to start deleting stuff, and there is indeed a lot of stuff that could be deleted. However, that would buy only a few months. The only way to free up enough memory would be to delete old user accounts and archive old topics.

The second reason is that Linode recently dropped its prices. This means I can transfer the site onto a more powerful server without spending a nickel more. That alone makes it well worth the trouble. Other considerations, such as quality of the network, are either on par or better than DigitalOcean.

What about WriterFeedPad?
WFP, which is on a different server, will also be moved, and I again don't expect any downtime to be associated with the move. The migration will result in a doubling of its available memory, which should significantly boost stability of it.

If you have any questions, just shout! Some long-time YWSers may recall YWS was once hosted by Linode before it moved to DigitalOcean. Back then, the move was made because DO was cheaper, had better equipment, and offered more flexibility. Since then though, Linode has gone to the mattresses and has improved its offerings tremendously. Still, both are terrific hosting providers.
